witch Posted September 15, 2020 Posted September 15, 2020 My sister runs choirs and she is seriously thinking of having meetings in the local pub where she can have a group of 6 in one place, a group of 6 in another and so on. If we can all get it again and have NO symptoms - so no tests done - the answer is for the people who shielded to go back to it and the rest of us wear masks everywhere if you are within say 2 metres of a building. So not for example if I was out on the heath walking the dog unless I can see someone coming towards me I have an issue with people not wearing masks in shops - but in my case it is the people who work there. Surely they need to protect us and themselves too - I realise a mask is not comfy but maybe at least a visor?
jmak Posted September 15, 2020 Posted September 15, 2020 Guidance from an authoritative figure in a BBC radio interview this morning (trying to keep this apolitical): 1) If you are a family of four going for a walk and you see another family going for a walk, you mustn't stop to talk. 2) If you suspect that a friend or neighbour has allowed a seventh person onto their property, you should call the police non-emergency number. Like most people, I am very keen that the disease is kept under control, but I do think that aim could be better served by trying to keep people on side than threatening them.
Andrew_C Posted September 15, 2020 Posted September 15, 2020 It would seem that masks are doing good for the wearer as well as the people they meet. New England Journal of Medicine. 2

mikeprice Posted September 15, 2020 Posted September 15, 2020 Other exemptions apply, like "organised sport". This means that we can continue training as a touch rugby team, however we can't have the same people in a room for our AGM as that breaks the rules! And - you can continue training as long as it is an organised group if a few of you want to meet up and have a quick game in a park - you need to keep it to less than 6
Garacesh Posted September 15, 2020 Posted September 15, 2020 And - you can continue training as long as it is an organised group if a few of you want to meet up and have a quick game in a park - you need to keep it to less than 6 What if you plan it the day before? Surely then it's been organised?
smurfomatic Posted September 15, 2020 Posted September 15, 2020 What if you plan it the day before? Surely then it's been organised? "Organised" (as far as I can tell) means as part of a club that's part of a governing body who has had their Covid plan approved by DCMS. Also the club has done risk assessments and put in place measures to reduce spread - such as hand sanitising before and after training, cleaning equipment, reduce the use of changing rooms, etc.

So far we're at 2. Which is actually fewer than I expected we'd have. And what kind of response is the school taking? So far, kids in the same classes have been told to self-isolate but staff haven't. 1
Dos_Box Posted September 15, 2020 Author Posted September 15, 2020 (edited) Three schools here in Preston have confirmed pupil cases of covid including my daughter’s. Each school seems to be handling it differently with my daughter’s sending her year group home until they can acertain who has been in contact with the affected pupil. Another school has sent all pupils home. Just recived an update and should be receiveing word by 3pm as to is she needs to self isolate. She's had a throat infection all weekend (and wouldn't belive me when I said she's probably got it from school) but no covid symptoms. She has however, successfully passed it onto me [emoji33] Edited September 15, 2020 by elsiegee40

mikeprice Posted September 15, 2020 Posted September 15, 2020 Heard of a thing that is going around Apparently some people, who normally get the flu vaccine, are not going to have it this year because it is a different virus Oh - OK then - so we are now at the point where people are choosing what virus to catch and potentially die from - and spread to other people - in spite of having been happy to be vaccinated for it before with no problems just how can we still have taken over the planet with such a high density of dumb people 1
Bionic Posted September 15, 2020 Posted September 15, 2020 just how can we still have taken over the planet with such a high density of dumb people I often wonder exactly this.
Duranis Posted September 15, 2020 Posted September 15, 2020 just how can we still have taken over the planet with such a high density of dumb people In a local facebook group last night someone was saying how it is all just a hoax and a way for the Government to gain more control. When I pointed out that would take every government on the planet, as well as every medical professional, all working together using the same lie, despite some of the Governments actively trying to destroy each other, they still wouldn't change their mind. The scariest part, they had WAY more people agreeing with them. Honestly before Covid I thought that at least the majority of people where reasonable, decent and at least averagely intelligent. Now it seems like reasonable, averagely intelligent people are definitely in the minority and I have no faith in humanity what so ever. I wish this was just me being sarcastic as well but I do genuinely fear for the world my children are going to grow up in.

I wish this was just me being sarcastic as well but I do genuinely fear for the world my children are going to grow up in. To quote Tommy Lee Jones, from Men In Black: A person is smart. People are dumb, panicky dangerous animals and you know it. Fifteen hundred years ago everybody knew the Earth was the centre of the universe. Five hundred years ago, everybody knew the Earth was flat, and fifteen minutes ago, you knew that humans were alone on this planet. 4
elsiegee40 Posted September 15, 2020 Posted September 15, 2020 (edited) Our local Facebook group was in agreement that the current spike is caused by masks. We managed to get numbers down without masks and now people are wearing masks the number of cases has gone up. They seem to have completely failed to notice that nobody was going anywhere in lockdown and that that isn’t the case now. A couple of brave souls and I got involved. I ended up saying that the problem, simplistically, is people breathing germs on each other. Now there are more opportunities to meet other people there are also more opportunities to be breathed on. Masks reduce risk, but they don’t completely stop the virus and anyway not everyone is wearing one everywhere. One of the anti maskers said she was vulnerable due to asthma and still believed others were a greater risk with masks. The NHS could save millions by not bothering with masks to satisfy this lot Edited September 15, 2020 by elsiegee40
paulkerton Posted September 15, 2020 Posted September 15, 2020 just how can we still have taken over the planet with such a high density of dumb people We haven't. They've always existed. They've just found out they can meet on the internet after going down a YouTube rabbit hole and being convinced by mad-men with a camera.

Nothing wrong with that theory, pastafarianism at its finest! Other random things that correlate: https://www.tylervigen.com/spurious-correlations
smurfomatic Posted September 15, 2020 Posted September 15, 2020 Also reminds me of something from a GCSE Maths textbook (can't remember it exactly). Over a period of ten years, the number of TV aerials in the UK increased 27%. Incidents of lung cancer in the same period increased 23%. Conclusion: TV aerials cause lung cancer.
jmak Posted September 15, 2020 Posted September 15, 2020 One of my sites is starting saliva testing at the end of the month.I can only find information about trials of that technology. The price mentioned is "similar to a paperback book", so about £5? Who's paying for your tests? Sounds expensive... I know Exeter university is paying for weekly tests and Addenbrookes hospital in Cambridge is trialling it for inpatients alongside swab tests. Government are running trials starting soon in Salford and Heathrow have got their own thing going on. Have you managed to get involved in a trial? NB: in no way getting at you, just interested in a) how the school's got involved and b) how the powers that be decided it's good value. I'd love to have a 20 minute saliva test widely available.

Might just be a trial as my other 2, which are pretty close by, haven't said anything (yet?). Mind you, that school are quite on the ball about such things and are my only site with reasonable social distancing and the also give out flu jab vouchers each year.
Andrew_C Posted September 15, 2020 Posted September 15, 2020 We, apparently, have a machine that produces results in 90 mins. £40 a pop though. School are also stumping up for ALL staff (inc IT) to get flu jabs.

The NHS could save millions by not bothering with masks to satisfy this lot Well... you could argue that wearing a mask gives people a false sense of security when out and about despite a lot of people not wearing them properly or having cheep naff ones, or not following proper sanitisation protocols when putting on/removing them. Which means more people out and about without a descent level of protection, which then leads to a rise in cases. I mean should this (https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-53395513) really be necessary?
