Since you two don't currently live together, I'd get one now and keep it home.

When the two of you finally get a place you can say it was given as a gift and you couldn't really say no... ;)

My ex-boss (before I worked in education) bought a Dalek, used it in the local carnival. This was very funny as (a) it was a really hot day, (b) he was a big guy - well over 6 foot - and © I didn't like him. He was very hot and annoyed by the end of the parade!

A herd of sheep [sic] have been caught on camera playing in a deserted children's playground - even pushing each other on a roundabout.

 

The sheep, which belong to Raglan Farm Park, are usually kept away from the children play area but due to the park being closed they have been allowed to roam free.

 

As well as enjoying the roundabout, the sheep were also spotted gathering around the zip-line and the swing set in the park...

School closures have little impact on spread of coronavirus, study finds

 

School closures are likely to have a relatively small impact on the spread of Covid-19 and should be weighed against their profound economic and social consequences, particularly for the most vulnerable children, according to a UK study.

 

The research, led by University College London (UCL), is the first to look at evidence behind many governments’ decision to shut schools and keep pupils at home.

 

The UCL-led study concludes that the evidence to support the closure of schools to combat Covid-19 is "very weak", and statistics from influenza outbreaks suggest school closures "could have relatively small effects on a virus with Covid-19’s high transmissibility and apparent low clinical effect on schoolchildren".

 

The research team reviewed 16 studies of recent outbreaks of other coronaviruses, including the 2003 Sars epidemic in mainland China, Hong Kong and Singapore, and found that school closures did not help control the epidemic.

 

Robert Dingwall, a professor of sociology at Nottingham Trent University, said the UCL study suggested the public health benefits of school closures were not proportionate to the social and economic costs imposed on children and their families.

 

“It also underlines how the assumptions used in modelling the Covid-19 pandemic may rest on very flimsy foundations in terms of scientific evidence. This work suggests that UK schools could and should begin to reopen as soon as practicable after the initial wave of cases has passed through.”

 

A government spokesperson said: “The decision to close schools was taken in line with scientific advice on how to limit the spread of the coronavirus. We asked most children to stay at home in order to protect the NHS and save lives.

 

“Schools will remain closed until further notice, except for children of critical workers and the children who are most vulnerable. We will reopen schools when the scientific advice indicates it is safe to do so.”

 

^ What about the effect on school staff and the people they live with? :confused:

He was talking about herd immunity (not possible with a virus with no vaccine and high hospitalisation/death rate), "taking on the chin" (deaths) and shaking hands with every patient in a hospital only weeks ago.

 

I wish him well, but he's done a terrible job of ignoring successful containment strategies.

Video from an NHS doctor (helped by a senior ICU nurse) explaining a breathing technique that can help prevent COVID-19 developing into secondary pneumonia.

 

The bit about laying on your front is interesting, I'm surprised this isn't being recommended more widely (perhaps it is for COVID patients, I don't know any) as it's a well-known technique for hypoxemia (low oxygen saturation). See here for some US doctors thoughts on it.

On one hand there's talk of stopping the "exercise allowance" as people are spreading the virus, but on the other it's not bad to cram 30 kids and a handful of adults into a room together?

The classrooms in my school just aren't big enough to space students 2m apart (like most UK secondary schools I imagine?). I'm not sure how it could work. :(

Just been to local bike shop - had to queue up outside as he is very busy - people behaving properly - staying far apart but being very British about knowing exactly where they are in the queue

 

Left my bike and went back 45 mins later by which time he could talk for a bit (at a distance) - apparently he hasn't had a day off since this lockdown started - all sorts of people resurrecting old bikes and needing parts or help in getting them on the road

 

He is thinking of closing the shop for a day or so just to get through the backlog!

 

most people just need to get their bike running properly - but he is getting annoyed by a few that just was to tart the bike up - one person just wanted green pedals and a red seat - hardly an essential trip out
