Who will still be running on Win7 and Server 2008 after Jan 2020?

We’ve got no chance of moving away despite warnings to the upper echelons of the school over the last 30 months.

 

Fed up with banging my head against the wall when they consider spending £20k on fancy new desks for the sixth formers a higher priority!

Student machines will definitely still be on W7, mainly due to time as there is only me. (My colleague was made redundant 2 years ago due to staff cuts). I'm hoping to have all the staff machines changed over by deadline date. As you say, nobody listens.

There will still be a few laptops on 7 after January, but they should all be replaced after Easter (or sooner if I can find the time!) - in terms of desktops, all but a handful already upgraded and those left are on te "to do" list. Server is 2012 so a little while left on that!

 

Only got the upgrades approved a couple of weeks ago, after I pointed out that £10k-ish on laptops is better than risking the security of the network. The man with the control of the budgets agreed...

All of our PCs are on Windows 10 but we still have a few VMs running Windows 2008 R2. It’s in my todo list to evaluate what’s needed to get them upgraded or replaced

I did in-place upgrade our last 2008 R2 server recently - that was SIMS with SQL 2012. Apart from the version of .NET subsequently being to old on upgrade and stopping all services, it worked fine. Don’t be too put off by in-placing - though do be aware that sometimes a subsequent upgrade may fail with sysprep errors.

The machines that will still run Windows 7 is our 4 EPOS Systems.

We think it’s just a waste of money for a Windows 10 Licences.

We’ve already upgraded our web server from 2008 R2 to 2016.

Our SIMS server is being upgraded this half time and our last few Windows 7 machines are also being done. I took the opportunity to standardise on Server 2019, annoyingly though SIMS doesn't support it yet

Server 2016 for dcfs , print server is on 2019 , azure services are on 2019 , wds is on 2016 , pass is on 2012r2 but looking to upgrade it to 2019 in December and I am currently working on moving all my vms to our backup host so I can wipe our main server and get rid of server 2016 core.

 

All desktops and laptops are on win10 I took advantage of the free upgrade on win7, we currently pack very small amount of pc around 160.

658 PCs/Laptops on Windows 10 build 1803, 6 on 1809, 2 on 1903, 1 on 1709. (Those above 1803 are by accident/tech error, the 1709 is a random student laptop in a batch of 30 we need to find)

 

Waiting for 19H2 before the next big rollout, then we'll stick on that for some time i imagine.

 

No servers older than 2012R2, got 9 x 2012R2 servers that need upgrading, got 4 years to do that though so no rush :)

 

Thankfully SCCM makes the whole process a breeze, i don't bother with in-place upgrades, as i don't trust them fully yet. But i can fully reimage the 575 desktops in the space of a weekend, without any intervention at all.

We had 1 we couldn't find.. disabled the computer account and it soon found us

Our SIMS Server was the only one running Server 2008, managed to get that switched over to Server 2016 during the six weeks. No Windows 7 boxes left but still have an XP machine running the heating, it's completely standalone and wired directly to the boiler.

Maybe so but if you do run into a problem and go to Capita for support, they may well laugh and say "Sucks to be you!". Something not being supported isn't the same as something not working.

just the POS on 7

 

Sims will get in-placed tomorrow to 2012R2, have already run a trial upgrade, and only ran into .net issues, which a reinstall solved. (Yay cloning a VM to an isolated instance)

(had to roll to 2008R2 first, then to 2012R2)

 

then everything else is 10 (1809), and 2012R2, upwards.

we started the roll up about a year ago.

I look after a number of primary schools, a couple are very large and I have managed to upgrade most servers to 2019 (apart from the SIMS ones) and 99% of clients are Windows 10.

 

I will now site back and relax with smug mode enabled :0)
