I always thought that using 'lie detector' test on it - and then shouting the results to a baying mob - sorry the audience - was extremely dodgy. They are known to be dodgy at best - some studies show them to be only slightly better than tossing a coin - so the potential for destroying someone's life after bigging them up as a way to 'prove' their innocence was always right up there

Basically the small amount of it that I ever watched was more akin to bear baiting than anything else

Maybe this will signal the beginning of the end for all these "adversarial" type shows where the suckers are manipulated into situations likely to cause emotional stress in the name of "entertainment".

Yeah, lie detectors are ropey at best, they should've never been a thing, but I guess they're popular because it's easy to say "Yeah but we proved that was a lie with science and whatnot."

@tg12 pointed out a good point on Discord though. And whilst I loathe to agree with anything that spews out of Katie Hopkins' mouth, she's not wrong on this.. 4 seasons of Love Island and we've supposedly had two suicides and reports of terrible-to-zero aftercare for participants. I know full well how in the pits you can end up in after a failed relationship, especially if it turns out your perception of it was significantly different to your partners, then add the sudden stardom of being on a national TV show into the mix and I'm inclined to believe those reports. But one unconfirmed suicide from a participant on Jeremy Kyle and the show is axed?

Not that I'm suggesting a conspiracy.. Just unequal and/or inconsistent treatment.

On the plus side, if you're a fan of a little irony, I suppose you could shout at Jeremy Kyle to get a job like he's become famous for? :p

It's a shame it took someone to die for ITV to cancel it.

ITV axes Jeremy Kyle

Just the show unfortunately. Jeremy Kyle himself hasn't been axed. :(

I fully agree that shows like Love Island where people's miseries are paraded for entertainment should be canned as well. I'm not going to shed a tear for one of these shows being treated 'unfairly' - they should all go (I realise that's not what you were saying, but I know some people have been crowing about how 'unfair' it is).

Yeah, I wasn't advocating for either of them, nor was I suggesting they both should go. It's just.. A thing.

I meant at least Jeremy Kyle sometimes did some good. Got people into rehab, or counselling, etc. Occasionally someone would come back on and have turned their life around. But mostly it came across as "Let's all laugh at these people."

Yep. A judge once described it as "human bear baiting" I believe, which I think is pretty accurate.

The poor sods who go on these shows need counselling, not mob judgement.

Another free timeslot = another cookery show.

or gardening

seems to me that this a good opportunity for another motor sport show - or cycling

How about a show based on the best posts from EDUGEEK over the previous week

Lots of jokes, puns etc etc - some from the correct topic

amusing put downs from the mod ( John Berskow esk)

sounds like a winner to me

"Bun In The Oven": two (or more) men who may be the baby daddy have to perform a series of baking tasks in order to convince the baby mommy that they are "the one". If the one the mommy picks is the one that matches the DNA test revealed by Jezza towards the end of the show, the child gets a trust fund for it's education.

I am not sad to see it go, it was a terrible show making a mockery of people, while showing a pretence of helping them, its got even worse over the years to almost the British version of Springer really which it cloned in a fair few ways, its come out in the papers that it had pretty non-existent aftercare at times which is probably why they pulled the plug because of the litigious and reputational damage to ITV to let it continue.

I do wonder its cancellation hypocrisy against Love Island which is 2 suicides comparatively also, I wondered the same thing as others here.

'I'm devastated by guest's death', axed Jeremy Kyle says - as it's revealed he could get £3m pay-off having set up his own media firm HOURS after news of 'suicide' broke

Jeremy Kyle says he's 'utterly devastated' after the cancellation of his TV show following the death of a guest, as it is revealed he could walk away with a £3 million golden goodbye.

Even before the show was scrapped yesterday, Kyle had swiftly set up his own media company to safeguard his future.

He registered Hales Media Limited on Tuesday, giving his nanny-turned-fiancee Victoria Burton, 35, a stake.

[...]

Ofcom is also set to launch a review. Meanwhile, the future of ITV’s biggest daytime TV star is unclear. Based on media trends, Kyle is likely to walk away with a pay-off equal to his £3 million annual salary.

He could be gearing up to move his show to the likes of Channel 5, which has a history of scooping up former ITV stars, or to launch his own programme with the help of his newly incorporated production company.

Not a fan of such shows - but it is all very well for people to get all sniffy about it and say that such things shouldnt be on TV - the show had a HUGE audience and it would be crass snobbery to say that all the people who watch it are the sort of people who would be in such a show. I'm sure the show was watched by many people from "middle England" (trying not to be classist, or any other ist here). Where does the line get drawn between "protecting the vulnerable" and just flat out telling people that they need to do something "for their own good" and dictating how they should behave. I'm sure they dont see themselves as vulnerable. Yes, care needs to be taken but standing on a high peak looking down at the masses, tutting lightly, and saying that they must be saved from themselves? I don't think so.

Sneering at Jeremy Kyle is easy to do as well, but I am sure most people would protect their future as he has done.

I know it is probably a bit different when you are on the show, but anyone who has watched it will at least have a very good idea of what they are letting themselves in for. The articles I have read have said that the aftercare was pretty good - far better than other reality shows.

A guest on the lunchtime news on Radio 4 yesterday pointed out that the two suicides on Love Island could not be directly attributed to the show as there were other reasons - which would explain why the show wasn't canned when they happened

I have no issue with Kyle setting up a media company, or anything else like that.

I do however think that such things shouldn't be on TV. I disagree that people know what they are in for. A lot of the people who go on seem desperate (worried about their kids, their relationship, need mental health support, need addiction support, etc.) - desperate people may not always make the best decisions, nor be able to cope with negative consequences. Also, given that people are paid (I believe) £200 to go on the show, that's another perverse incentive for poorer people to whom that sum would make a real difference. It exploits people's vulnerability, whether they consider themselves vulnerable or not. I'm not trying to say that they need saving from themselves, they just don't need to be actively exploited.

Also, given that the production team intentionally rile people up when they probably feel like crap and are at their lowest ("You can't go, have you forgotten what she said? Go back out there and tell them how you feel, don't take it!"), I have many doubts about the claims that care and support were good.
