DrBeaker Posted March 4, 2019 Posted March 4, 2019 Hi All, Bit of an unusual topic I guess but with the stress and hassle of our jobs, thought this would be an interesting and more light-hearted topic to discuss. With EDC type of things - I wondered what everyone else's work keyrings are like. I'm always looking for ways to improve or add useful things to it and wondered what everyone else had on theirs? Mine currently consists of: Various work keys Small swiss army knife Micro-torch ("dollar-store" type) USB Memory stick Few personal keyrings (why not) Keys to office drawer/cupboard Mini-sharpie Wondered what other people's keyring bunches are like? I feel like a jailer sometimes as unfortunately we haven't got any fancy door access control systems with RFID etc so it's good ol' keys for me.
Simcfc73 Posted March 4, 2019 Posted March 4, 2019 Funny this is when my dad started losing his marbles he used to spend hours jaggling his keys and searching for them.. he had loads on there and after he died we checked them out and he had door keys from 30 years go on them and most we didn't have a clue about.... Fast forward to today where I have 30 year old keys on there from my moms house and most of them I don't have a clue about... and a couple of keyrings from my kids. Its the circle of life I suppose.
smurfomatic Posted March 4, 2019 Posted March 4, 2019 Work keys are just that - keys for work, plus a coprolite keyring (proof you can polish a turd if you apply enough time and pressure) "Home" keys have a small pocket knife on them along with the house and car keys.
MatthewL Posted March 4, 2019 Posted March 4, 2019 I don't have any keys any more for work, just 1 paxton fob setup for various customer sites I go to so much easier, have got my ID badge setup the same so can usually get in. On the keys just the usual house ones (soon to be one with new locks), car key and fire engine key (I operate a preserved engine with a friend and he is a pain at remember the key when we go out so I got a copy to keep on my keys)

I only had 2 keys... and one of those was for the key safe in my office. I don’t believe in lugging round any more than is necessary and that includes keys. Ladies clothes frequently aren’t blessed with decent pockets and that, combined with my back problems, means I travel light if at all possible. I have even installed the StoCard app on my phone so I don’t have to carry shop loyalty cards. Thanks to StoCard and Apple Pay, I don’t even take a handbag out with me most times now. Scout hut keys - Various keys for gates, doors, store rooms, Equipment container, tool boxes, padlocks. Perks of being the Quartermaster you get keys to everything!
Roberto Posted March 4, 2019 Posted March 4, 2019 Work key ring? I have an ID card for each of the two offices I’m based in, local and city. They get me in, and wherever else I need to be. Actually was th same at the college. It’s been years since I’ve needed bunches of keys to work. 1

Car key which also has USB sticks, this is small enough to fit in the small pocket of Jeans and forget about or tie to shorts when going for a run. Home keys, normally carried Work keys, only carried when at work. comms cab keys and office key only. The rest is ID card. Edited March 5, 2019 by Davit2005

jmak Posted March 5, 2019 Posted March 5, 2019 I go for maximum separation of roles so that I only ever carry the minimum with me: House has back door and single key for garage and shed ("keyed alike" padlock for 3 doors). Car keys: no key ring at all as I can't stand things jingling or rattling when I'm driving 🤪 Bike keys - all bike locks attached to my saddle pack which I always take if I'm on my bike Work is the only one that tends to go in a bag, so most bulky has 2 office door keys, server cupboard key, 3 USB keys (2 bootable and one encrypted general) ID badge and 2fa tag. At home I then have further groups: one for all outside doors, one for windows, one to give to tradesmen.... Does that make me sound a bit obsessive? What I really want is RFID locks s that I can just take my phone....

Home keys are reasonably minimal: Car, front door, back door, shopping trolley token, all on a mini carabina (keys have rubber caps over them to minimise jangliness). Work keys: 4 master keys, IT storage room key, server room entry fob, most commonly used cab key, carabina clip, worn on belt loop. EDC tools: SOG Crosscut multitool, Gerber GDC hook knife, Yubikey 4, USB drive (Kingston DTSE metal body thing that's great for clipping onto a carabina and will never fall off), a couple of freebie screwdrivers with no handles but with the tops of the shafts formed into clippable triangular loops (which serve as general purpose screwdrivers, pry bars, scrapers). EDC tools live in my pocket. Saves me having to waste too much time arriving somewhere without the right keys or tools. Edited March 5, 2019 by jthompson
Rob_D Posted March 5, 2019 Posted March 5, 2019 Work keys split into 2 parts Masterkeays (we're transitioning from one key type to another), paxton lift fob & desk keys (*2) get locked in the key safe at work. Office key and key for the hall laptop lecterns stays with by ID badge and goes home (because I need both before I get to the office key safe). Home keys are front door, back door, shed, bike lock on one "ring" and car keys and the elephant key protect fob on another that's clipped to the first (so I don't have house keys dangling when I drive - heard it can knacker the ignition somewhere) I use a keysamrt holder for my home keys to stop jangling and reduce wear on my pockets.

And here I was thinking a new building with one type of key would avoid the "jailer's keys" setup...

House keys is a front door key and a side gate key. Motorcycle keys is the ignition key and the top box key, with a little leather keyring. Motorcycle security keys is the chain padlock key and the alarm fob.

So I'm not the only one - I whizz about and go up stairs two at a time. My excuse is that way I get more done, but I think it's just become an auto-pilot thing. My first boss when I worked in schools got me doing it I think - he did it, so I followed suit.

Normal keys are on a Wunderkey (imagine a swiss army knife, but keys inside) with RFID fob for the alarm, a technic lego brick* and a gerber shard. *The key board at home is a triple-stacked lego base plate. 1

I'd love to carry more than just my keys, wallet and phone but I dont like having too much in my pockets. However if I carrying a bag I put an EDC pouch in it that consists of Leatherman multitool, pen, lighter, torch, microfiber cloth, small first aid kit. I've yet to need anything else

LeMarchand Posted March 5, 2019 Posted March 5, 2019 I have 3 "loops" that can be separated (e.g. I don't carry the "work" loop at weekends). Work loop consists of keys to get me into 2 sites + a couple of extras for secure areas at one. Home loop has front/back door keys, storage unit, Dad's house, a key shield with stuff like a bottle opener and an extendable pen. No time to get into EDC!

Home Keys: Key for Ma Hoose Nuka Cola bottle opener Small penknife (very sharp - also has scissors/file but these are not used) Utili-Key (the blade on this is kept nowhere near as sharp as the penknife) Tag for "If found - chuck these in a postbox and they'll get back to their owner"
