Sixth Form Photo IDs

I take it that all Schools require 6th form students to have photo IDs but who takes the photos? When Year 12 students start they need to have an up to date passport size photo on their ID card which they must wear at all times on site. The School official photographer doesn't come on site until at least 4 weeks into the term (this is to take their photo for SIMS) but SLT don't want 6th formers walking around with no ID as they need to be easily identified as they are not in school uniform any longer. This has meant that photos have had to be taken on a standard click and go camera. The quality and framing differs depending on which staff member took the photo.

 

How does everyone else do it? Do you use the same photo for SIMS and their ID badge? Who takes the photos?

We issue the lanyards at the start of term so they can at least prove they're a 6th former, then make the cards once the photos for sims are done.

I'm 100% confident that's not the case. We're only introducing them this year and we're well ahead of our county's schools on this.

 

We take the photos, we did our directly after their school photos in the hall so they were all present and easy to tick off. We used the school SLR in an area with good lighting.

We don't require photo ID for anyone, however we do have "student cards" which basically look like ID cards (photo and name) which are used for the catering and library systems. We just extract the photos out of our MIS, either taken by a professional company or if the pupil missed the photo day or joined later in the year we have our own photographer do it.

 

Edit: Our 6th form aren't in "school uniform" in the usual sense but it's not "non-uniform" either, it's "business dress" i.e. smart suit, the boys have a school branded 6th form tie, so harder to mistake random people off the street with the actual 6th formers.

We use a web cam on a windows 10 laptop and the built in camera app. this lets us rename them straight away so they don't get mixed up. These get cropped and added to sims, then imported into our cashless catering (live register) and our home brew registration system (soon to be replaced hopefully). We print the cards from the reg system, but I want to replace this this year with either Net 2 card designer, live register or a sims report.

 

We found we had to put an expiry date for them to be used for student discounts.

Do you have a space setup with correct lighting and background when you do this?

We got a pro photographer in during the first week to take badge photos this year for new sixth former a, but in future I think the official school photos will be done right at the start of term.

We do this on the induction day in the hall (plenty of light and a plain background) with an SLR on a tripod. We get a list of names in Excel of the students which we print. During the 'shoot' we write the photo number from the camera beside the names. We then enter these numbers back onto the excel sheet and use this to rename all the photos to their name via a batch file.

Not really, I find somewhere that has reasonably good lighting, and put up a big sheet of white paper on the wall. The back of the paper they use on display boards works ok. Works well enough for small id card and sims photos. Our card printer screws them up anyway. Our office has a good wall outside for this as well. I crop them down to passport size, so you can't see much background anyway.

 

The sims ones get replaced later in the first term, when the school photographer comes in.

 

I'm often tempted to borrow some portable lights from media, but its not really my job, and I don't want to spend too long on it. I made the mistake of coming up with a quicker and more accurate way of doing it, and then we got lumbered with it.

Not SIMS but we have one photo (per person) to rule them all.

Who takes the photos?

Finance. They own the process that produces cards.

We get Tempest in early on and the photos they take are uploaded to SIMs and then used for ID cards.

 

If you can, book your next year slot now so at least next year you have them done earlier.

Sixth formers in non-uniform wandering around on a school site of lower school students in uniform was raised as a safeguarding risk to us as you couldn't easily identify who was a student and who was a random sixth-form aged person who'd walked in off the street. So, for the past 4 years, one of our A-level Photography teachers has come in and taken them for us in the photography studio on enrolment day so we can have them printed and ready for use on the first day of term. Our Sixth Form students get theres done over the first week a class at a time. We just use a cheapish point and click camera and the photos go onto both SIMS and their Lanyard ID - the images are that small the quality doesn't really matter.

We take them ourselves, we attempt to get most of them on enrolment to day failing that we catch them on induction day.

Me and my team do everything in house.

 

External photographers would often come in the first week of term and then take a further week or two to get the disk or usb stick back to us causing issues with students having no ID, no follow me printing, no cashless catering, etc.

 

We take Year 7 on the first day of term and then stay as late as required to print and program all cards.

We take Year 12 on induction day (a day during the last few weeks in July) and then mop up the last few on GCSE results \ enrollment day. There are usually 12 or so students who are late arrivals and we take their pictures in our office.

We take Year 9 pictures the last week of term and then issue them with new\updated cards when they start in Year 10 too.

 

In terms of kit and space. We use a standard Cannon digital camera on a tripod in the sports hall for Year 7 with lighting and white backdrop. For Year 12, we have the Post 16 library for the day with the same kit.

Year 9 pictures -same kit, and we book out a free classroom for the school day between AM reg and lunch - As Year 11 and Year 13 have left by this point, we can spare a room for 4 lessons.

We only do 6th form cards. The 6th form librarian takes the pictures during the induction day before the students join and then takes the others when they start on the first few days. I then extract from SIMS with Salamander and print the cards. As one of the others said. We too have expiry dates on the cards otherwise they can't use them for discounts. Bus passes for us as were in the city centre the are common reasons for having cards. Our 6th form centre is across the road from the main site.
