Staycation Ideas

Afternoon all,

 

I've not been on holiday for nigh on 4 years now and am about due for a week where I go somewhere. I'm tight/lazy so was pondering over a staycation in the UK around end of June/July, however I'm completely stumped as to where.

 

Soooo, suggestions on a postcard, please? I live in London so am slightly leaning towards the south where the obvious one is Cornwall. Not too much by way of requirements as long as I can get there relatively easy by train and there's a nice beach, will be going by myself so nobody else to entertain.

I would say South West but then I live here.

You can go direct from Paddington all the way to Penzance and with a bit of notice get it rather cheap.

I've always wanted to go wild camping in Scotland for a weekend or so, but guess it's a bit difficult to get somewhere off the beaten track if you've taken the train up there.

I am playing on doing two day walks with camping over night.

 

First one I'm doing is local to me.

Cornwall is a definite one. Not sure how easy Wells-next-the-sea is to get to by train, but the beach there is good, and a relatively quiet little place with some interesting places to venture nearby.

Train + beach limits it a bit!

 

If you go to Cornwall, avoid Newquay.

Swanage is pretty nice. The train is also one of the local attractions.

Penzance looks quite appealing; like the idea of a stroll by the promenade et al.

I live and work in Penzance - the town centre itself has seen better days, but there's loads around to see and do such as beaches, coastal path walks, historical mining visits, St Michael's Mount. Also pasties and scones. #jamfirst.

You know, I was going to do Cornwall last year, but wimped out at the thought of six hours on the train and stopped at Devon. I could perhaps be convinced this year though...

Do a tour on the ancient monuments (Avebury, Stonehenge etc.) around the Salisbury plain area and then down to Dorset for castles and beaches.

I did it last summer and using various hotel sites got a very cheap week away with lots of walking.

Alternatively, get yourself up to the Lake District or Nothumbria. Lots of freash air and gorgous scenary. Again, not bank breaking if you shop around.

I can highly recommend the Wirral after living there for some years. Easy to get to by train (London - Liverpool), a great cheap light rail network runs all round the area, you've got Chester and Liverpool close by, and miles of gorgeous empty beaches, as well as some great countryside.

Pop to Tenby in Pembrokeshire. Train takes you into the lovely walled town and there are three beaches to choose from, plenty to do all around.

 

It's my favourite part of the UK.

What are you going to do on a cold beach in the pouring rain? [emoji12]

 

Not suggesting you go further afield - we're doing a "staycation" too - just if you're dependent on public transport, I'd make sure there's plenty to do within walking distance of wherever you choose to stay....

 

If you want outdoors, I'd go somewhere with good walking - for some reason I don't mind walking on the hills in the rain, but I don't like being cold and wet on a beach.

 

One left field option; Eastbourne. Brilliant walls into the South Downs and along the cliffs past Beachy Head. The is a beach and if you get bored there's either a scenic bus ride or quick train journey to Brighton.

If not, just the luxury of spending a whole afternoon in a hotel bed reading a book is a rare treat IMO. Holidays are for resting after all!

There's still a sleeper train that runs to Penzance, we got it last year (it actually stops at several stations on the way, but you have to get up earlier for those). The actual train fair is the same as usual (book in advance for the best deal), you just pay extra for a berth - around £40, which isn't bad for a night's board. And, bearing in mind you wind up in Penzance at 8am having just gotten out of bed, you save on a night's B&B accommodation in Penzance anyway.

 

Penzance is the end of the train line, but there's a couple of places back up the track that are worth a day trip, including the Eden Project (didn't actually make it to that last year, have to leave it for a return visit). There's also a bus route that does a loop in three stages around to the Minnack Theatre / Land's End. Everyone I've spoken to who's been there as seemed heartily unimpressed with Land's End, by the way - it doesn't seem to impress.

Dorset/Hants/Wilts . Ancient monuments,(Avebury, Stonehenge) beautiful churches (Salisbury cathedral), New Forest, Jurassic Coast, Blue Flag beaches.

Trains and buses are pretty good - you can do a coastal bus ride too.
