Email is a useful tool that speeds up a great many tasks within any enterprise. Where it falls down is poor training and poor configuration. Staff need to be trained to target their emails better, and useful distribution lists need to be maintained within each organisation.

So, those blanket emails shouldn't be happening really - they should be targeted specifically at the most relevant people.

It is one of the things I want to improve here.

I know you're all about to hate me for this, but we receive around 2-3 all staff emails per week on a busy week, and one of those is a planned weekly email from the Head on a Friday. Our staff are exceptional at emailing only the relevant people, and not sending junk around.

You are right. We hate you.

What with staff sending irrelevant carp all round the school, and Office 365s default to "Reply All" - life here is...amusing :(

We limit access to allstaff; it's me, head's PA and the communications manager, no one else can send to the list. We do maintain a vast array of mailing groups straight from MIS data - teaching, tutor and year groups, staff by department, students by department and year etc.

We've looked into this as well, not found the right solution yet!

my rule of thumb for email is if it's going to take more than 1 email to resolve then call the person and get it sorted verbally with a follow up email to confirm(ass padding). I see so many people sitting behind email as the only way to communicate with others and it can take a bloody age to get simple things done.

Not just us then...

Yeah, it happens a lot. Our SLT got fed up so I setup a approval so anyone who sends to the all staff email group their email had to get approved first :) It's cut down on the stupid stuff a lot. Mainly recently with Office 365 stupid. Reply all change.
