What did you learn at BETT 2008

So yopu have been to BETT 2008 seen all the latest innovations. So what did you learn from BETT 2008 so that all us Eduggekers that could not attend can get a feel for what was there.

I got introduced to the various combinations and uses of the RM minibook and the use of single sign on's for VLE's and OWA and other modules.

I learnt that I should get a new pair of shoes as my feet were killing by the end of the day as well as a bigger screened PDA as its a bit small for OWA on the move.

 

Oh and from an IT Front, that Nelson Thornes can be a good firm who do want to make us happy when you speak to a really nice guy who solves your problems and that I should really make a proper plan of where to go round the show and be more methodical, or just get 2 days to do it in.

Never go to BETT with a broken toe and sprained ankle. Particularly if they are on different legs

I learned that at BETT there aren't any technical people who attend - just ex-double glazing salesmen who have come in out of the cold.

 

But some of the kit was nice anyway

I learnt that National Express coaches are uncomfortable for long journeys (6hrs). Especially the night service - loud ticking indicators, juddering, and gale-force winds blowing in from the driver's open window all lead to a sleepless journey

 

Oh, and that my phone battery lasts less than 24 hours if used as an mp3 player for over an hour.

I learnt to try and get 2 days off next year for BETT. Assuming the outsourced PFI company actually allows me to go!

 

More seriously though, Adobe's Master Suite 3, I knew it was good, but didn't know it was that good! I spent a good few hours watching the presentations in awe!

As has been said above with the show getting bigger and bigger all the time you don't have enough time in one day to view everything.

 

Next year I will be going down for a couple of days possibly Friday / Saturday.

I learnt that a £100,000 packet filter, monitor + traffc shaper can be largely replicated using open source tools and a spare desktop machine.

2 days are a must really for it I think if you are serious, I hope it moves from Olympia to somewhere bigger though and has a slighty more prompt tube, the Earls Court change is not that fun as it can take a long while for the Olympia tube to arrive.

Yes I fell foul of that. I thought I had set of in plenty of time but got stuck at Earls court for a bit and ended up missing my fisrt train by 20 seconds on the way home

Docklands (ExCel for those who don't know the name of the exhibition centre there) is where the grapevine has it moving to for around 2010/2011. Got somone at Docklands doing a job there at present and they have heard that its rumored to move there. But could all be pie in the sky and were stuck waiting for tubes at Earls Court for another 40 years

Was acutally quite lucky with trains - despite several changes on the wah back (and being stuck at Watford Junction about about half an hour at 5pm at night wasnt fun either!

Make sure you feed that back to the Supplier Advisory Group and I'll do it direct at the next Visitors Advisory Group meeting.

Didnt go to BETT but yeah...every time I go to London I seem to end up spending ages at Earls Court tube station

The NEC would be excellent - nice central location.

I learnt that people will believe pretty much anything you tell them, if you say it with enough conviction!

Also, i learnt that when calibrating a Smartboard, rather than tapping on the dots, you should tap to the side then drag towards the dot and release on it.

I'm not convinced how it works but it supposedly gives a better result.

And, if you cock up, press the button on the bottom dash (i think they are the mouse button replacements) and you can go back a dot or two, which is really useful if you want to do a 36 point calibration.
