AlistairB1983 Posted June 26, 2023 Posted June 26, 2023 The Mrs and I watched the new (ish) Luther that's on Netflix (I think - I can't remember which she said it was on!). That was .... intense. Not that the show ever did when it was on the BBC, but this very much didn't hold back in terms of violence, gore, threat etc. There were several scenes she just couldn't watch happen, even as you saw it coming a mile off. Suffice to say I ended up being a human shield on a couple of occasions to block out the TV! Extremely well done, but very much not one for those of a sensitive disposition to watch solo, I'm reliably informed.

Ever since Netflix lost the rights to Discovery it's been a complete manure show, in terms of streaming.

That said, they need to get a new one going as the next season of DIS is the final one, which will leave just SNW and LD as "current".

Shows seem to be getting longer these days, and what used to be a "20 minute" show is now around half an hour. Bearing that in mind... Extraordinary (Disney+). Nearly everyone gets a superpower (albeit a fairly rubbish one) around their 18th except Jen. The first episode literally made me spit out my drink and is the best but the rest are pretty funny too. Probably NSFW stuff in the trailer. Colin from Accounts (iPlayer and Sky). After Ashley flashes Gordon, causing him to hit a dog, the two of them have to look after the pooch together. Funny in a "Sharon Horgan" sort of way. More NSFW stuff in trailer. Star Trek: Lower Decks (Prime Video?). Surprisingly good comedic Trek spin-off. Yonderland (Sky). From the "Horrible Histories" peeps. Utterly mad comedy fantasy with Debbie, The Chosen Mum, saving a land full of mainly idiots. Ghosts UK/US. Speaking of the HH crew... The Baby (Sky). Dark comedy about an evil baby. Bottles it at the end, but if you have ever thought about anti-natalism... Probably NSFW stuff in the trailer. I'm sure there are more, but how could I not include... Galavant (Disney+ and other places everywhere apart from the UK). Great comedy/fantasy/musical with loads of Brit guest stars. Despite only 2 short seasons, it had a great ending. Naughty words and jokes in song. 1

I'm also not sure what the heck was going on with William as the post-credits scene to S2 seems to have been forgotten. We're watching way through Kim's Convenience atm on Netflix, 20 mins well written and funny sit com Seconded. 1

Based on what the creators have said in interviews, the season 2 post credits scene is supposed really far into the future. I'd guess it would have looped in to the ultimate ending planned for season 5. Or maybe it's the same William from the S3 ending/post credits scene. 1

Now on S4, and that is probably the case, but I wish they'd calm down on the timey wimey stuff. S4 started off badly, but fortunately picked up in the third episode. Just 4 eps left... 1
DalekSec Posted June 30, 2023 Posted June 30, 2023 After what has been a few disappointing Apple TV+ shows in a row (Silo i couldn't get into even after 4 + episodes, and platonic was a non starter 10mins in) was starting to loose faith in the platform a bit, have loved previous shows such as Ted Lasso, Trying, Severance etc. But then comes along Hijack and i'm hooked already 2 episode's in! Really good so far, hope it keeps up. Shame i now have to wait a week for next one... Also just finished Poker Face (Sky), overall give it a 7.5, some really good episodes but a few are slow and have really bad twists that taint the show overall.

The title Squinters refers to the fact that the commuters are facing the sun as they head east from Sydney's western suburbs in the mornings, then facing into the sun again in the afternoon on the way back to the western suburbs. Think "Car Share" but with more cars, drivers, and passengers, and in Australia. 1

Although it was one of those that sets up a load of things and then realises that they can't come up with anything that will live up to the set up, I'm glad I stuck with it. Not sure it all made sense, and the time jumps were an unnecessary complication. S4 actually gave Bernard something to do (and Stubbs!) and Caleb got to do something other than look vaguely confused and wasted. Poor Dolores got that role in most of the season. Although they'd hoped for another season, the wrap up, whilst not the planned ending, actually works quite well. Also Silo S1. Started brilliantly and then, as suspected, had a few episodes of padding until the ending. The ending was a bit of a surprise, though. Will probably watch S2, but wouldn't be in tears if they changed their mind.

southhamster Posted July 3, 2023 Posted July 3, 2023 Finally got around to watching Foundation - Isaac Asimov adaption on Apple TV. Really enjoyed it and beautifully filmed, Jared Harris (Chernobyl) is excellent. In some ways I thought Raised by Wolves was better but maybe Season 2 due out ?next week will raise the game.

Kimchi also gets around a bit. Re Aussie shows, if you enjoy "cosy" crime they have a few OK ones. 1
