comrade Posted July 16, 2015 Posted July 16, 2015 (edited) These days most of us have 1000's of photos. Mostly taken on our phones, unless you use an actual camera. We end up with them all, but what to do with them. I have them all stored on my main computer, this computer is backed up, and then I have a third HDD with just the photos. One of these drives is taken and stored somewhere else (encrypted). But I have been in the situation in which a main computer HHD failed, and so did the backup drive. Plus you have the hassle of bringing the HDD's back and forth you update them. I was thinking about a raid drive, but then again these can also fail for various reasons, although a lot safer than one HDD. Anyway I finally decided I was going to just put them all on the cloud. People have told me, oh, someone will be looking at them, or, the account will be hacked and they will get your photos. I decided that was not really a valid con again cloud storage, most of us are nobodys and the governments of the world (mainly the US) are not going to care what we have stored. Sure, they can look at them, but I think given the massive number of users that is unlikely. Its surprising there is not a main service provider who offered storage within the uk, not even email services, its all based abroad. Mainly the US. Even BT, email service is from the US, cloud storage is in Finland, and BT has all these data centres in the UK! Do you trust cloud storage for personal photos? I haven't had an issue I know of people accessing my photos but then none of them would be incriminating. If I do take photos on my camera instead of my phone them I add them to Google photos. I do sometimes do a back up of my stuff from the cloud but since starting to use Googles services I have never lost anything.

You now get unlimited photo and video storage (if you are willing to accept the resolution limits Google impose) with Google Drive now, I had something like 30GB of stuff which now is all backed up for free.

Handy for when you take an embarrassing pic of a mate, show them, show you 'deleting' it only to later recover it from OneDrive in time for the best man speech at their wedding Microsoft Datacentres are spread across the world but from what I remember from a random webinar I was in, data is stored at the closest datacentre first, which for us is ther Dublin datacentre and then mirrored to other datacentres shortly after. Personal photos taken on my SLR are backed up locally- only if I know they're especially important will I copy them to my OneDrive account. Otherwise backed up to external hard drive x2 and hard drive in PC if I'm feeling particularly efficient. Also left on memory card as long as possible and memory cards circulated so they're sat on the card for as long as they can be.

Oaktech Posted July 16, 2015 Posted July 16, 2015 My phone and my laptop backup pictures to google photos... I also have a 8tb raid6 NAS in the network too and I have a robocopy backup of my user area to it, so the chances of things going seriously wrong are quite small.
bossman Posted July 16, 2015 Posted July 16, 2015 Dropbox synced with masses of storage free, Google drive account with unlimited storage, Microsoft onedrive with unlimited storage and Samsung storage 200GB free so everyone synced and the chances of losing them is now very minute!! Don't you just love "Cloud Storage"

Also, since I have an android phone, all pictures taken on my phone are automatically backed up. When on wifi it is pretty much instant, when on mobile network it can be longer, but usually within 30min or so.

edutech4schools Posted July 16, 2015 Posted July 16, 2015 Have been using Google drive for years and before that Google Picasa online. Pics are always private unless you share them. Never had any issues.
rich_tech Posted July 17, 2015 Posted July 17, 2015 I use iCloud for mine straight off the phone, I also use Google+ and Onedrive too, Paying 80p a month for 20gb on iCloud and I have 100gb free on Google+ and Onedrive (100gb free because I bought a chromebook, though google give free storage for photographs and I snagged 100gb with onedrive as part of having a legacy account with them)
gmonks Posted July 17, 2015 Posted July 17, 2015 I've got a Samsung Galaxy S6 and get 100GB free storage on One Drive. It automatically backs my photos up to the cloud. Quite like it.
john Posted July 17, 2015 Posted July 17, 2015 Mine are in Crashplan if they go onto my NAS or home PC and if they come on my phone they go automatically to OneDrive as that is set to autosync.

ITGURU Posted July 17, 2015 Posted July 17, 2015 As a photographer, none of my photos are backed up in the cloud - client albums are password protected when uploaded but are watermarked. With 800GB of RAW files , they're stored on a RAID system, I then backup to a Microserver single drive, then every now and again i'll put the other single drive into the microserver and do a copy to that one which is stored in a safe - all is encrypted, so in event of disaster drive can be connected to any PC and data restored, as raided NAS systems use their own format. All done with robocopy scripts.
tb2571989 Posted July 17, 2015 Posted July 17, 2015 I have my photos synced to my own personal OwnCloud instance, which then gets synced to a folder on my desktop PC. I then move them to a folder in my docs which is then added to my backup rotation and OwnCloud again.
