Thanks guys, having some issues with Dell E5550s on our older Promethean Board models. With the machine plugged directly into the board these machines worked fine, but using a USB wall plate they didn't play and came up with the "USB device not recognised" error message. Putting a powered USB hub inbetween sorted the issue.

We are moving to a managed print solution this summer and we are looking at getting rid of our old printers. Currently looking at options - one company have quoted just under £500 to take all 48 machines. Make offers on any machine - all come with toners and would be sold "as is" but working. I have my photos synced to my own personal OwnCloud instance, which then gets synced to a folder on my desktop PC. I then move them to a folder in my docs which is then added to my backup rotation and OwnCloud again.

So as of September we are moving from a mere 72 school-owned HP Laser Printers to the much more reasonable 10~12 MFDs that will be spread around the school, much like our sister school. We'll be scrapping PCounter and going with PaperCut (as that's what our sister school uses) with a single print queue where you can sign in and release the jobs. Our old printers are a mix of HP M4345 (Mono MFD) HP CP3525 (Colour Printer) HP 3530 (Colour MFD) and a handful of 2025s and 2055s as well, as well as a single large HP 6040 (Colour MFP) and a single HP 9040 with 8-bin output tray (Mono printer). These were bought at considerable cost to the school as part of the BSF program 5 years ago. For the first year we used original HP Toners, and with the exception of the 6040 and 9040 we now use Greensource compatible toners which have been excellent. What we'd like to do is get rid of the mass of printers and recoup some of the money spent (a single HP 3530 cost over £1200 new). Does anyone know of any companies, ideally in the SouthWest, that will buy printers, or anyone have any suggestions? We could list them on eBay with collection only, but the school doesn't want the hassle of that (even though I'd be happy to do it).

Yodel is probably my least favourite courier and I will actively try and not use them. DPD is my number 1 - Amazon Logistics I've only used the once (for two books) - I had a saturdya 8am - 8pn slot and they arrive at 7pm. On a saturday. I was fairly impressed.

Eteach - OAT IT Support Technician 564194 While this is advertised by Bradley Stoke Community School, this will be a role within the Olympus Academy Trust's IT Support team covering two secondary schools, Abbeywood Community School, and Bradley Stoke Community School. Two primary schools are joining the trust currently, and a third will join after it has finished being built. 37 hours a week, 8am - 5pm, all year round.

Following a recent server refresh we now have a HP C7000 chassis with 12 HP BL465/BL460 G6 blades "spare". We'd rather not completely dispose of this setup due to the sheer amount it cost in the first place and we'd like to try and recoup some of the money back to spend on new projects. I've already contacted one company I know of who seemed keen to purchase and then changed their mind over the weekend. (I think my housemates would complain if I took it home and added it to the home lab...) Setting up a class set of W8 Lenovo tablets /w Office 365. Each tablet has it's own Outlook.com address and account, which is set up as [schools initals][asset number]@outlook.com. I've set IE to use our SWGFL connection and also ran the netsh winhttp set proxy command so Windows Updates and the store works. Office 365 is installed, locally, using the Office 365 bootstrapper that came with the machine, and has been activated OK. WhenI launch work and click "Sign in to get the most out of office" (so docs can be synced to skydrive) every time it comes up with an error message "We are unable to connect right now. Please check your network and try again later". I've got next to no Win 8 expereince and no 365 so I'm muddling along here...any tips?

Pre-loaded last night. 24GB of my SSD gone D: Probably be 40GB total when the expansions come out. I'll likely play the campain first to get used to the controls and way things work, then spectate a few games on each map before plunging into the action. LevelCap posted a video yesterday of the different Levolution events in all the launch maps. Not particularly overwhelmed. Siege of Shanghai tower collapse is probably the best of the lot.

While music magpie is an idea, have a look and see if you've got a CEX (entertainment exchange) near you. They buy a lot of music/games/phones, etc. When I sold two of my old sony ericsson phones envirophone would give me about £2 each while CEX gave me £45 cash for both which I was happy with. You can check on their site estimated prices for stuff.

Same, also have two N54Ls at home one as a file server other as a web/dev server. Does the G8 officially support 16GB RAM or do you need to flash the BIOS like you do with the previous version? It would be nice if newver versions had a better Hardware RAID support - only supports RAID 0, 1 and 5 AFAIK. I currently have the 320GB disk included as a boot disk with 3x 2TB disks in Windows Server 2008 RAID5.

Same, I'll be playing this evening (access through BF3 Premium). I'll see how well my rig runs it (shouldn't have any issues) and will help me decide if I order BF4 or not. I am certainly looking forward to watching the skyscraper fall.

As of last Friday, all students have raw, unfiltered YouTube access. 6th Form have YouTube and Twitter access (and have had it for a year). There is no Facebook access apart from that controlled by us for evidence gathering for Cyber bullying. Lunchtime club runs where students play online games, etc. Students are not allowed to play games during lessons although a lot do. Funnily enough, we've already had two requests to block YouTube. As it's the head and executive head that's said "open YouTube" that's not going to be reversed quickly.

Sorry for the delay - using the instructions provided I updated the firmware and can connect to/set up the board as expected.

We have an issue with one of our boards - the initial USB run when the board was put in was too long leading to flaky connections. The installer came in and corrected this issue with active extenders on all but one board they decided to put in a wireless setup (like due to the cable run would have ended up being 50m+). A couple of months later we have a job logged that the board is not working with sound/the interactive pen. We try connecting the USB cable which intermittently works, and try and connect the board wirelessly by right-clicking the tray icon and clicking "registration > wireless board". The knowledge base article and the on-screen instructions seem to say "Hold the board pen over the light in the top left corner, then hold the right-click button down. Once this is done, hover over the three targets that appear" however this does not appear to work - a picture of the activhub with a big red X appears and then the calibration closes down. As we've only got the one wireless board I can't check the setup of that. I tried using a staff machine with a short USB cable into the white switching box next to the board and that worked fine. I tried with a different machine on a different activhub on a different board to check I'm doing the setup correctly but I still have the same issue. Are all boards wireless by default and you have to buy the ActivHub to use them? The spare I'm using is from a set of ActivExpression handsets (which to me looks exactly the same as the "wireless upgrade kit" available for the 300-series board. I'm now kind of stuck - we don't want to buy another ActivHub if I'm merely doing the setup wrong. Are there any better instructions for setting the board up wirelessly or am I doing it horribly wrong? Thanks guys, Tom.

Went for Razer BlackWidow and Razer Deathadder in the end. It's made quite a difference for me, especially in BF3. Two buttons on the mouse I've mapped to "prone" and "knife" so if I'm getting shot at I can tap it and lie straight down, or if I run into someone I can tap the button and get a knife kill instead of reaching for the buttons needed.

Morning all, I've recently decided that my basic wireless logitch jobby isn't really suited for playing Battlefield 3 and my other FPS games. I'm looking, therefore, for a keyboard and mouse set - ideally Logitech or Razer (if I was going to push the boat out) for FPSs. Mouse I'd like two normal buttons, scroll wheel and then maybe three or four in the side. Not particularly fussed about weights or massive DPI settings (unless you can convince me otherwise). Keyboard-wise something with mechnaical keys, and probably a dozen function keys. And driver software that doesn't suck would also be nice...

Heh it's the little things.

If you have the time and money to install them correctly, and the time and money to train people (including us technicians) on them, I would hope you would have very little issues. However. We have 6 iMacs in the school, 4 of which are for the use of the 6th form, along with 60 MacBook Pros which are used (or supposed to be used by, not sure how much use they actually get) by Art and Music. They authenticate thorough an xServe to our AD setup which works...reasonably well. We had isses with the macbooks authenticating through the wireless, had to set up a login page for Smoothwall (and that tab has to be kept open to browse the internet), and our print software (PCounter) has a Mac client although my god that was an agonising process getting it working properly. Our domain is also called .local which comes with it's own issues (horay apple deciding .local was for the mac -_-) They have CS5 installed on them for use by the students - although it's likely that apart from Photoshop and Dreamweaver it won't get used as it's just too complex. We've also taken the mice/keyboard out and replaced them with cheapy USB mice/keyboards because they would have gone walkabouts fairly quickly. Make it completely, utterly, crystal clear that, while you're open to Macs in the network, you need the support of staff and SLT as you do not have the expereince needed to deal with them. Before my current job I had 0 Mac experience and now I have...a little bit more. If you want it for media production and don't need Garageband, etc, spend the money on some more powerful PC machines - quad core with 8GB of RAM, an 240GB SSD and a 500GB Spinny Disk hard drive, a gigabit network connection and 64-bit Windows.

Ah, Kodu. We've got it deployed (though GPO) to our three computer rooms. Machines all run it fine, students like it, make quite some advanced stuff. It's also depolyed to a couple of Staff laptops (IT teachers and one student support). They'd like to run it on their laptops when they take it home to create resources but Kodu does not really like running "offline". Current install = Works on staff laptops fine. Turn off wireless/disconnect network cable, and program refuses to work. Throws a "WaitingForStorage" error and attempts to find a file on the staff profile area (\\filesrv01\staff$\username...etc) Using the Configurator to create and save to a local folder also does not appear to work - as soon as the network profiles gets involved, it goes down the pan. From excessive testing the only way this seems to work is by logging on as a local admin and installing the program as a "portable" version (in "Advanced" setup options) - we'd rather avoid this. I know it's 3 machines but I'd rather not give local admin out.

We have water in our server room. I queried it when the school was being built but was told it was needed to meet building regulations. There's 4x sprinkler heads (I can see, anyway) in the roof. I can only hope it's "dry" pipes (no water in the pipe until heat is detected) rather than "wet" (water in pipe 24/7, if you knock the bulb with a ladder, etc, get a bucket). Ideally we would have had a gas system but you need an external release and as our server room is on a main corridor it would be flipped quite regularly. I also understand it it works on heat rather than smoke, and not on alarm, so if a student knocks a call point the sprinklers won't trigger. You'd have to physically go into the server room and hold something warm up to the senser. I don't know what it would class as "warm" say...if the power failed, then the servers came back on and the air con didn't...then it would get fairly warm in there...warm enough to trigger the sprinklers? I don't know. I don't want to know. We have fairly comprehensive disaster recovery procedures but nothing could prepare us for the potential complete and utter destruction of all systems that reside in the room (which is just about all of them).
