Our Promethean PRM-25 have a network port, but as far as I'm aware that's just for remote power-on and monitoring the bulb and system. Manual confirms this with "LAN/RJ45 function of the projector through a network, such as remotely manage: Power On/Off, Brightness and Contrast settings. Also, projector status information, such as: Video-Source, Sound-Mute, etc." We also have two Epson EB-G5300s, one in the hall and one in a drama studio. This will project over the network (as well as over Wireless) but these are used with VGA > CAT5 cable run > VGA to projector instead of network. I suspect it would work fine if you have the wireless bandwidth otherwise you could end up with "buffering" issues. What you'll need to do. - Check that the projectors can project over the network - Check that you can setup some sort of security (so one staff can't control a classroom down the corridor) - Check that you actually want to use wireless and which wireless protocols the projectors support.

I'll give major Kudos to Novatech for this - if you buy a machine from them you can choose to have it blank, or just Windows installed, no extra crapware.

Consider going to somehwere like Entertainment Exchange (CEX) - we got one for our old white xbox for less than £20.

I'll echo Creative's - our family owns 4 sets of Creative Inspire T10's. Bargain for the price - about £30 from Argos. I have a 3.5mm cable from my desktop to the speakers and my Xbox is cabled in with a HDMI to HDMI to VGA and 3.5mm box (£30 from eBay) - so I can put the video through my desktop screen and use the speakers instead of the natty 2w screen speakers. The 3.5mm goes from the converter box to the Aux speaker input (on the actual speaker itself).

Me, and a Network manager. 600 Student laptops, 300ish Desktops, 120-odd Staff laptops. 40ish iPads. 20 Servers, physical and virtual. 150 Staff, 800 students. Phones, CCTV, single site, and we're term time only. We do not cope.

Playing devils advocate here - are you sure you're cut out/confident with this? I'm 23 and have been working in schools for the best part of 5 years and while I would be happy moving to senior technician I don't think I could manage Network Manager till at least 25 - my technical skills are fine but I coudln't "manage" anybody - what's the size of the team there? It sounds quite small as, even as a network manager, you're expected to do everything. I guess it also depends on what systems and devices you've got.

Hello - our IT department have recently got some Arduino UNO boards and would like to use them. The only issue is that the drivers don't have any proper installer, it'#s plug the board it with USB, watch Windows try and fail to find drivers, devices > update drivers > locate drivers > install drivers and then set the com port. The programming application can be ran over the network (or so it seems) so that's not likely to be a major issue, however I would really prefer to avoid repeating to process on 60-odd desktops. Are there any third-party driver installers, or can I copy the driver file to the machine's local disk in C:\Windows\System32 and hope that Windows finds the driver? Thanks.

Since upgrading the motherboard recently I've moved to some lovely DDR3 and have these two sticks as spare. They've been used in my desktop at home since May 2011 and have caused me no issues whatsoever. Full spec is: Kingston 4GB (2x2GB) DDR2 800MHz HyperX Blu Memory Kit CL5 1.85V Non-ECC Unbuffered. Looking for £20 + about £6 for delivery through UK Mail. Based in Bristol so can delivery to there and surrounding area.

Work server have functional names, school initals and role, then number. So Domain Controllers are SCHDC01, SCHDC02, etc. Home machines used to be called after precious gems, i.e. Diamond, Ruby, Crystal, etc, but now they are [owner name]-[type]-[role] so tb-svr-fs or tb-vmsvr-apps, for physical file server and virtual applications server respectively.

My gaming desktop at home was always a bit of a mishmash of bits, bundles and case from Maplins, hard disk and RAM from eBuyer. It's no way obsolete with a Athlon II X4 Quad-core 2.8GHz CPU and 4GB RAM (the RAM issue has been held back a bit by the fact the board only has two RAM slots and it's hard to find DDR2 in more than 2GB capacity). My previous graphics card was a XFX Radeon 5450, which I picked up a couple of years back for about £50 which ran what I wanted to play (Battlefield 2 and 2142, Minecraft, Supreme Commander) reasonably. It started to show it's age a bit as World in Conflict wasn't the best on framerates and Just Cause 2 was a slideshow and Crysis 2 and Battlefield Bad Company 2 were unplayable. Over the summer break I splashed out a bit and got a XFX Radeon 7870 from Novatech - first "proper" graphics card and probably the most I've ever spent on a single computer component. Plus a 600W modular Novatech PSU (which are apprently rebadged OCZ or Corsair ones) to power it and well, I'm chuffed to bits. Blows through Just Cause 2 at 75FPS + and I'm looking forward to throw Battlefield 3 at it soon as well. It's a lot bigger than I was expecteing and unfortunately covers 3 out of 4 SATA ports on my motherboard so the DVD drive has become a casulty. I'm looking at getting a new board - first I was confused when the specs of my CPU said it was a AM3 while board said it was a AM2 socket before I realised the AM3 ones are backwards compatible. And a new ATX instead of mATX board will help with MOAR RAM slots. For scale, this is the old card (bottom) vs new card (Top).

As explained in the thread above, out Humanaties department have got ActivEngage Mobile onto their iPads (32 of them) and asked me to set it up so it can be used properly - in the unlicensed state it allows three clients to connect, no more. I think the fact the app was free meant that any other potential cost was overlooked and I'd like to have a figure to present to them before spending the time on getting it up and running. We currently, as mentioned, have 32 iPads that would be used with it, although I could see this increasing over the coming months. Do we need a license for "up to x" devices, or a one-off for the server?

I'll try updating the software and drivers versions but I have a feeling it might be due to the Access Control on our VLANs - I was thinking that the server acts as a "bridge" between the client and teacher machine but obviuosly the iPads need to be able to talk to the staff machines directly. We've got the iPads on the Mac Wireless VLAN, talking to the server on the Server VLAN and then the staff laptops may be either connected to the Staff Wireless or Staff Wired VLANs - I'll have to check that traffic can travel from the Mac Wireless to Staff Wired/Wireless. I'll ask around for costs, thanks.

Evening. Our Humanaties department have recently bought a set of iPads. One of the things they have put on is ActiveEngage Mobile for iPad, which is, as I understand it is free, and I have been tasked with getting the things up and working. I've followed the documentation and installed the Server program on our application server (on 10.1.10.201) and configured three virtual hubs, as well as the default left in place. I've installed ActivInspire and the driver on my staff machine and configired it to connect to the server and the control panel shows green and connected. The iPads are connected to the Mac wireless network and are connected to the ATLAS server (well, in server config it shows connected). I've opened up activinsipre, started a device regestration, generate a PIN code and...nothing. Trying to register on the iPad says "a regestration session must be started in ActivInspire in order to connect". EDIT: I've started a regestraition session on the Applications server and it connects with the PIN okay...so I guess it's an issue between the server and my desktop? I know very little about ActiveInspire, apart from troubleshooting board issues, and even less about the iPads, so I'd appricate any suggestions. Also, I've noticed that the ActivEngage server allows 3 users in it's unregistered state - how much are we looking at for a key? We've got about 32 iPads at the moment. I think the Humanaites department overlooked that bit...

Luckily, it's only me that uses Firefox in the school as my primary browser so as the students (and staff) are on IE 8 they'll only get the picture and won't know what they are missing. Clever, though.

Hello - I've spent a bit of time on this wondering how to do it but have got a bit stuck. I'm trying to update the graphics drivers on some of our HP Laptops. They are currently using the Windows 7 built-in ones which means the simulations part of a DT program doesn't work and I've narrowed it down to the graphics drivers - update them, and it works fine. Here's the rub: the driver is packaged as an .exe, in HP's sp48327481.exe format. When the exe is ran, it gets extracted to C:\swsetup\sp48327481 which then has a setup.exe and the drivers inside it. I've mucked around with some batch files and psexec but I'm stumped. I can run setup.exe -s which does a silent install on my machine okay but I want to do it on the laptops remotely. psexec can copy the setup.exe file across to the machine using the -c switch in psexec but it doesn't install because it needs all the other files that didn't get copied (I guess, anyway). Can pxexec copy a whole folder and then run the installer from that? Or do I put it on a fileshare and set permissions so a script can install it? Or do it manually (which is fine for a few laptops but not for a couple of dozen).

Currently awaiting on a delivery of two N40L-series Microservers to add to my home network. They join a ESXi-hosting DL360 G5 and a custom-built file/backup server. I'm toying with having them as ESXi hosts but there's the option of setting up a DC properly and using the other one as a WDS server.

Hi Guys, I know the HP Microserver is quite popular with some of the tecchies here. HP are still doing their cashback offer - I was looking at getting one from eBuyer but the price has jumped up £10 recently. Remembered about SD and went to have a look, they're doing the N40L variant (the newest ones) for £133, inc vat, after £100 cashback. Personally I think this is a cracking deal, especially as you get a 2.5" 250GB HDD as well (I believe, anyway). If anyone can beat this please let me know, or I'll get two of these to set up as ESX hosts for playtime over the easter break - because as much as I like the full size DL360 and DL380 series, there's no way I could buy one of them to learn on

Yeha, I've used it in the past, very useful for converting video/audio formats. Bear in mind the free version only goes up to 100MB file sizes.
