Need some added weight to back my case......

Windows XP!

Where do we stand?

 

Schools/Colleges, how many still have XP running on networks?

How many stand alone are running XP?

 

 

 

We have a number of teacher/classroom laptops with Windows XP installed that have a Windows Vista sticker with 2 GB ram, is it worth upgrading the OS and the ram? Bite the bullet and upgrade or get rid of?

 

A dozen machines with XP installed and not worth upgrading .

 

 

What have you guys done?

All our machines are 7+ and we don't allow Students XP and Vista devices on our wifi unless it is vital

All machines now Win 7+. My governor school has a single standalone, un-networked, XP box for a machine in DT due to driver issues with Win 7.

 

Now that XP is out of support, i.e. no updates, having it in school leaves you open to too many vulnerabilities in my opinion. Quite a lot of software, especially AV, will cease to be updated for it in the near future probably

We still have a year group on Windows XP as a few programs they use do not work on windows 7, however in the summer I will be upgrading all laptops to Win 7 as the teachers have been told to find an alternative.

We moved to 7 in summer 2013, having started migrating teacher laptops over from about a year out.

My and my current school have been on Windows 7 since 2010. We are currently looking at a Windows 10 migration once we get full support for the MIS.

What's Windows XP?? ... lol yeah I think the move should be imminent.

The hardware is capable but you should do an analysis and look at upgrading if you can afford it, this of course only applies if it is cost effective.

 

SSD's and 4GB RAM will be more than sufficient depending on the age of the computers but it will keep you going for a while...

I've got one suite of netbooks that run windows fundamentals (essentially XP) with a custom shell that loads a terminal session. They'll be going in May.

Win 7 on the network + a couple of Win 8 stations.

 

That said, i installed Vanilla Vista on a few licenced laptops recently and it wasn't anywhere near the pig of an OS that it was when it first came out. It seems to run really well so long as it has a decent amount of RAM.

Been 7 since getting rid of CC3 a couple of years ago. No access to the network is allowed from any XP device for security reasons, and all staff laptops were written off as a result. Will not risk having an unsecure OS on the network or accessing the internet from here.

Is it worth you looking at EES licensing agreement perhaps? Vista support is already gone I believe as well so that's a no go...

We're 99.99% Win 7 [few Win8.1, bunch o' servers and a XP embedded I don't touch]

 

XP doesn't get connected to the network on pain of death.

Windows 7 is out of mainstream support. Starting to look at new things now. Time to move on again.

Windows 7, no XP anywhere. However I wouldn't be too bothered if XP was on an unconnected standalone. Might be useful with legacy software, some people just refuse to buy new stuff!

Vista has the same support framework as 7, extended. It's still a 'secure' OS though, in that it receives security patches. If 7 or 8.1 is an option go for that, but fully patched Vista SP2 isn't that bad.

I don't think there's any need to panic yet about Windows 7 @FN-GM... Though forward thinking with school's' glacial-speed budget processes is always a good move!

Let's put it like this... This school went predominantly windows 7 18 months ago. I arrived 6 months ago, I have a windows 10 lab in place now with a view to retiring our 2008r2 DC and going windows 10 server towards the end of the year when I have no money to spend and therefore lots of time. I plan to transition the majority of clients to windows 10 by september next year.

Have you considered a Microsoft Subscription? We have a whole suite of >4yo PCs with 2GB RAM and a Vista COA that run W7 just fine (although not as well as on our new machines with SSD and 4GB RAM). Had a few issues with some software/hardware not being compatible but that's the price of progress. Think of your XP machines like a car that runs on leaded petrol; it still works but it's not conducive to a safe environment.

Majority of schools i guess have dumped XP in favour of Windows 7.

 

So it seems i am not alone then pheww with the few stragglers.

One of the 3 schools i work for are running Windows 7 throughout, the other is 95% Windows 7

Need to work my magic i guess on the remaining, the powers of persuasion.Look into my eyes not around my eyes....

Win XP pretty much across the board, mainly due to the age of the PCs (very few laptops now). My machine is W7 and we're looking at replacing Macs in Music with PCs so they are the first to be moving to W7.

There will be no new features etc in Windows 7. So sticking with 7 could prevent progress.

We are all Win 7 since Feb 2009 looking towards this summer for upgrade path to Windows 10 if feasible.

 

Full VMware or Hyper-V on 3 new hosts with new server 2012R2 platform or even server 10 and 3 Synology hybrid storage systems 2 in tandem for the VM's and one for data storage.

 

Big project but hey its not going to be me doing it but the LEA or a third party so no stress since JRE sweet..............

We migrated to Windows 7 in 2012, and will be migrating again to Windows 10 in summer 2016. XP is both impossible to secure and difficult to support, and keeping it on the network would be a huge risk and a false economy in my opinion.

I think the last XP laptops were decommissioned or upgraded last summer....
