localzuk Posted December 18, 2014 Posted December 18, 2014 I've been handed a laptop in the last couple of weeks, a laptop which according to its event viewer says it hasn't been turned on for 7 years, but not actually used properly since 2006. A laptop that pre-dates my employment here and pre-dates the inventory list I had when I started! So, what's the oldest random bit of equipment you've been handed back by someone, and were surprised existed at all?

fairm010 Posted December 18, 2014 Posted December 18, 2014 School or personal equipment? I was handed a school laptop a while ago (Bear in mind we upgraded to Windows 7 in 2009 - 10) running XP SP1, complaining that their remote access hasnt worked for years!
gshaw Posted December 18, 2014 Posted December 18, 2014 A 386 Compaq laptop that had been sat in a cupboard for 10+ years, 4MB RAM! Did have a really retro hibernate function that clunked and beeped away but did work pretty well. Ended up keeping it to reconfigure switches with as it had a serial port on the back
3s-gtech Posted December 18, 2014 Posted December 18, 2014 Not quite handed, but it had been mentioned that Maths wanted to use a laptop that was in their store. My reply was 'what laptop?' so went and found it. Pentium II with 64MB RAM and 4GB HDD, still rocking Windows 98, absolutely perfect condition. I've been here over eight years and never seen this thing. Still works lovely once I found a new PSU for it.

Scotbynature Posted December 18, 2014 Posted December 18, 2014 My technician was handed a Macintosh SE 30 the other day to say thanks for fixing a laptop for someone. It's from 1985 or 1986. He was really excited as he collects Macs. I know what you are all thinking but he's ok, I promise, don't hold it against him, lol.

edutech4schools Posted December 18, 2014 Posted December 18, 2014 Last year I was handed a BBC microcomputer robot. It was a bit like a roamer and had metal antennas so it new when it had hit something. It also came with about 20 old style large floppy disks and box with instructions.

We did find a mint working BBC Micro, a boxed and perfect Open University build-a-computer thing which is still around somewhere, but that's about it.
