Watched London has Fallen last night.

 

What a pile of nonsense. I know you're supposed to suspend disbelief but do filmmakers really think hundreds of terrorists would be able to congregate in London, with heavy weapons? Do they really think the French President would sit alone on a small speed boat?

 

Bleh.

Haha watched this too recently. mrs_sparkeh and I enjoy a ruddy good-terrible movie and this fitted the bill.

 

One of my favourite quotes was from the news report where the newsread says the attack:

has decimated most of the known landmarks of the British capital

So...one in ten of the known landmarks have been destroyed. What about all those unknown landmarks?! Nonsense! :D

Ricki and the Flash

 

Failed would-be rock star Ricki (Meryl Streep) returns to the family she left in order to follow her dream when her daughter is jilted my her husband.

 

Basically an excuse for Meryl to pretend to be a rock star and belt out a bunch of tunes. If that sounds good to you, knock yourself out. Otherwise avoid.

Watched the new remake of the Magnificent 7.

 

Pretty decent western although it does at time require you to just go with it and not look to closely at the details, such as holding what appears to be a six shooter and shooting way more than that. Also a Gatling gun that shot from some distance away seems to have much more devastating and accurate effect then you would think possible.

 

But apart from that a good western

After Earth

 

Now, this film received almost universal poor reviews and I can't really see why. There were some silly plot points* but overall a solid action movie that entertained us.

 

*Like, why do the genetically modified human hunting creatures only hunt by smelling human fear. Why, no eyes or ears? Just fear? Really?

Team Leader: "And so I think that everything is in place and that about wraps it up so let's get on and make this fear sensing, human hunting creature!"

 

*team cheers*

 

Team member: "Erm... excuse me but I can't help noticing on the design that the creature has no eyes or ears...?"

Leader: *sighs* "Yes Alan it has no eyes or ears, ok let's get on with it"

 

Alan: "Right yes but... why?"

 

Leader: "Because it hunts on human fear Alan, ok right let's..."

 

Alan: "Yes I know that but surely that should be in addition to their existing senses? I mean its a bonus feature right?"

 

Leader: "Not this again Alan, you always do this!"

 

Alan: "But its no extra work for the creatures to retain their other senses, in fact there's a team dedicated to manipulating the genetics to remove the eyes and ears, we could save time and money by..."

 

Leader: "Alan! You know that the Genetically Modified Fear Sensing Human Hunting Creature Senses Subcommittee have debated and voted on this already. No eyes or ears!"

Resident Evil: The Final Chapter.

 

 

Dire - not even in the good way that a film can be so bad that it's actually good in some way. I mean seriously bad here.

 

Don't get me wrong, I like the series - even though the films have committed some really bad things (as far as the background and storyline of the games go - stop sniggering at the back!), such as completely rewriting the background and reusing almost blow for blow the cool sunglasses wesker fight scene (re-animating it even?) in an earlier film.

 

But this is a new low.

 

There is either too much lighting or not enough, and whoever decided on the shots for the fight scenes seemed to be rolling dice for which camera they were using every two seconds. Also, while I certainly don't mind gazing at Mrs. Jovovich - every profile shot is too. damn. close.

 

I only sat through it to finish the series as I've seen the rest of them - even through the sudden (and unexplained) arrival of Las. Plagas V2 zombies earlier in the series.

Not seen the film (not keen on Big Willie) but I do sometimes think that critics are like lemmings, which is why it always annoyed be on the (now defunct) IMDb boards when the Rotten tomato score was held up as "proof" a film must be poor. Especially as numerous films now considered classics had poor reviews on release.

This is the problem with game adaptations: stray from the source and the fans hate it, but too close and it's "slavish". I do hate the "closeup" filming that is increasingly prevalent, especially in fight scenes. Anyway, we just wait for the RE films to hit Sky; they're usually disposable fun, but not worth the cinema trip.

True - the original film dealt with events that had none of the game characters in them, and I feel this made it better.

 

You can have adaptations and them still be awesome. FFVII: Advent Children was brilliant - but that was a continuation of the whole story rather than another take on events, Assassin's Creed wasn't actually too bad and Prince of Persia didn't seem terrible.

 

 

Games to films are usually pretty dire though.

I don't go to the cinema very often, but I made an exception yesterday to see Toni Erdmann - Toni Erdmann (2016) - IMDb

 

It's a German comedy/drama (I know!! Weird, huh?) that had the whole audience howling and sobbing with laughter. It also had it's heartwarming, poignant moments, too.

 

It's on limited release, so if there is a screening near you, I'd highly recommend it.

Watched the new movie in the Underworld series. Underworld Blood wars.

Not as bad as I heard it would be. But I did go in with low expectations. I liked the first one, second one was good. 3rd one not so much and then I skipped the 4th one.

 

I get what some people were saying about it that it was a bit tired with the same old same old. But it had a plethora of fighting and action. If that's all you want from the film then definitely see it!

Couple I've seen recently.

 

I watched Deadpool last week, and found it hilarious (could easily just be my sense of humour though), so watched it again at the weekend.

 

I then took the kids to see the Lego Batman film yesterday which I also thoroughly enjoyed. I love the attention to detail in the film and the really small references that make the film great for an adult. Bruce Wayne's limo having the reg plate "Wayne Car" for example and the flight in the opening scene with the flight number of "1138" which I can't imagine is by accident.

For two hours it seems like it might be about to become good - it never does.

 

Can't fault the acting (or direction) but the premise and writing is just awful - if it hadn't had those actors in we'd have turned it off after 30 minutes but they are all good actors they should have been able to make it better than it was.

 

Please don't make the same mistake we did! Your time would be better served watching 2 hours of trailers on youtube.

Took my five year old to see Lego Batman at the weekend. I thought it was pretty good! Loved all the easter eggs and the references and the password to the Batcave made me actually lol.

 

Not sure my boy got much of the humour, but he thought its was just about the best thing he'd seen (excluding star wars and Transformers). Which is high praise indeed

You're damn right, "excluding Star Wars" :p

I remember Lego Batman came with my XBox 360 when I bought it.. I was surprised at how fun the game actually was. And the Lego Movie is apparently pretty good.. Might have to give the Lego Batman movie a shot.

The Lego batman movie is definitely one on my list.

 

Watched Arrival this week.... it was ok, but I don't know if I just wasn't in the right mood for it but I thought it was a bit slow and boring in parts.

Plus, and spoiler alert for anyone who hasn't seen it yet. I hate when movies try to wrap up the ending with a time paradox as this one does.

The whole thing kind of feels like it was the boring introduction to a better movie to come (the whole the aliens help us now and we help them in the future... but if time is fluid for them then the future has already happened so what the hell is the point.... arghh..)

Anyway, an ok film... but ultimately nothing that great. I would only give it a 5/10.
