Being the 5th highest of all time also isn't much when most of your goals are against San Marino, Switzerland, Bulgaria and Montegro.

 

The CL is at a much higher level than the EPL. He has averaged 3 goals a year in Europe. Maybe, just maybe he is over-hyped.

 

 

You can only score against the teams that are put in front of you.... The same teams that Defoe, Owen, Shearer etc came up against.

 

Fergie tending to play him on the left wing in the champs league, again in a position that you don't get the best out of him. Rooneys best goal scoring season for United was when he was played up front as a striker, and the majority of his goals in other seasons have been when he's been playing in the number 10 role.

 

Play him in his proper position or don't play him.... Playing him on the left wing is pointless, you don't get anything out of him and it doesn't help the team (although he did get an assist playing out there) I personally would play him behind sturridge and put welbeck/Lallana on the left and Sterling down the right

very true, you can only try to score against who is infront of you, he does against San Marino, but not Portugal, Italy or Germany.

 

 

I do agree tho, #10, up front or nothing.

I would switch Sterling out to the left for the Uruguay match. Their first choice right back is suspended, so we should unleash the pace of Sterling against the stand-in. Drop Welbeck for Lallana on the right, Sturridge in the middle with Rooney just behind. There's potential for a lot of fluid movement and switching positions between those four to give the ageing Uruguayan defence something to worry about.

That cross was inch perfect though, no denying that.

 

So it should be! Any footballer should be able to cross like that though, £100+k a week or Sunday league.

How do you know Rooney isn't the best in that position as he isn't being given the opportunity to play there.

 

Personally after watching the Uruguay game I would play Sterling down the right wing and Welbeck.... Sterling will run past the uruguay left back for fun and Welbeck has the ability to track back on the left. This will create space for Roooney and Sturridge through the middle

 

Yes, he has the ability to track back. So does Rooney, so why didn't they?

Welbeck ran back to take the ball of the Italians quite a few times on the right, he is very good at doing that. Oh and also he was playing out of position as well but had a great game :p

Okay but the job being asked of him playing on the right is exactly the same as the job that he is being asked to do on the left.

 

Rooney was being asked to do a completely seperate job to what he is best at which is playing up front or in the number 10 role.

Here's a novel idea - why doesn't everyone - fans, press etc just get behind whoever plays - support the team - talk about their strengths and not their weaknesses. We know it is unlikely we will progress too far in this tournament so let's just enjoy it. The young lads are playing great football and it is refreshing to see England playing like that. Rooney might not be at his best but he is still one of the guys the younger players look to when things aren't going right.

 

If he plays get behind him - if he doesn't then get behind the person that takes his place. Footballers, especially strikers, need confidence and being constantly criticised by the fans and media only adds to the pressure he is under - let him enjoy the world cup and he might start playing with a bit more freedom.

Bit much actually complaining about commentary.... Andy Townsend is much worse and before him David Pleat was without a doubt the worst commentator I have ever heard!

Ronaldo will be short of fitness, and though he may start, I don't think he'll be his usual self.

 

Germany to win by two goals. (scored by mertesacker and Lahm so satisfy my dream team's requirements)

Here is a nice statistic...

 

Germany have won their opening match in every World Cup since 1990. In no fewer than four of those six matches, they scored at least four goals, beating Yugoslavia 4-1 in 1990, Saudi Arabia 8-0 in 2002, Costa Rica 4-2 in 2006 and Australia 4-0 four years ago.

Think tonight may be too much for him. I reckon Portugal will struggle to get out of their group tbh.

 

Most of their creativity comes through Ronaldo - as does most of their goals. If he's not firing on all cylinders then I think they're going to find it very very tough (I'm not bitter about previous cups, but i do like seeing them lose! :) )
