GeekyPete Posted February 28, 2014 Posted February 28, 2014 How about telling them when they were considered good? The Core2 Duo came out in 2006, safe to say that it hasn't been considered reasonable spec for over 5 years. The first P4 3Ghz came out in Nov 2002. Just leave it at that.

tmcd35 Posted February 28, 2014 Posted February 28, 2014 Specs look fine to me for Office and Interweb use. The only one I'd turn my noise up at is the P4, presumably single core, 1Gb and 40Gb HD. Okay for a home PC for web browsing, running a light Linux distro, anything else and it's seen better days. Laptop looks usable with the right OS.
Tesla Posted February 28, 2014 Posted February 28, 2014 (edited) I think we only have about 3 pentium 4's lurking around (up until last year they were in our IT suite!) they're only used for basic tasks (obviously) such as general web browsing, barely anything runs on them at startup etc (no smartboard!) Most of them are Hyper-Threaded, which I suppose helps a little. Running Windows 7. We've actually had Solidworks (3D CAD) running on them! Admitedly we've upgraded to 4Gb Ram (3Gb usable) and 80Gb SSD's, but still... 1

Chris_Cook Posted February 28, 2014 Posted February 28, 2014 We still have a fair few of those, but we are replacing them. the gx620s work quite well with more ram and an ssd, but arn't really worth the cost or effort. You'd be better off buying a cheaper new PC if you can. The treacle thing probably sums it up well. Last term we were asked to put photoshop on some gx620s. It did run, but there wasn't much of the lesson left by the time it had started...
3s-gtech Posted February 28, 2014 Posted February 28, 2014 We have a few machines like 1 in, but with SSDs. We mostly have Core 2 Duo machines, with 3GB+ RAM and SSDs they're more than up to the job. Just ditching our last P4 (Prescott) machines this week. None of those quoted will set the world alight, but useable. Some older machines don't support AHCI which hobbles SSD upgrades a bit.
