Here is the background, I was at home with my son (3 years old) and my wife was at work. The last time I saw it was around midday when I specifically remember un-pausing my son's TV channel so he could continue watching cebeebies. He had just come back from my mum's as usual on a Sunday and I was getting together some food for his lunch. Now I don't generally lose things, nor do I go off carrying something around the house for no good reason. I also have a very visual memory. I might forget a lot of things people tell me, but I can remember things that I've done quite well. At worst, I would just place it down on a surface randomly which I would find again later within a minute or two. I know, what about my son, he doesn't tend to pickup anything to then go and hide it somewhere, also he was barely out my sight for more than a few minutes until I discovered it was lost just some 2-3 hours later whilst he was asleep on the sofa.

After just a few minutes of searching I had a bad feeling about this. I've lost something and I haven't found it within the usual few minutes. So I start the usual surface checking, looking at the most obvious places, but I still can't find it. Ok, stop now, do something else for a bit and it will turn up. The wife returns home and I tell her the story. At this stage she heavily suspects me, who wouldn't. We both search and find nothing. Ok, time to move the searching onto the next level and leave no stone unturned as she wants to watch TV. Sofa's are pulled out and all crevasses checked multiple times, toys in the room checked, in fact every conceivable space in the room checked even really stupid places are checked. Recheck some regular places just for the sheer hell of it, you never know. I've even shown my son a picture of the remote on the ipad and he just looks at me blankly. I've been through the all the emotions: initial frustration then give-up and think who needs TV anyway and then sometime later think, I'll watch something on TV, oh b*gger, no I can't.

I don't understand where it has gone! It isn't the smallest of remotes and it appears to have just vapourised! It disappeared whilst I was in the house (lounge \ kitchen) within a 2-3 hour period, there is nowhere else to check. I'm struggling to find a logical explanation to where it could have gone!

It's been 2 days now and still no remote. I've looked on ebay, "buy it now" £20 or take a chance on an auction and wait the best part of a week, great! You just know the moment I order one, it will turn up somewhere but it's almost at that stage.

Thanks for listening, I feel a bit better now.

From my own experiences (I have the memory of a goldfish):

A random pocket of a coat you swear you haven't worn for six months

The bin

Inside the fridge

Inside a shoe

Underneath an object you moved while looking for it

Somewhere about my person

In the server room (who knows how?)

Under the bed

Now, where are my keys?

That's why I invested in a smart TV.

If I lose the actual remote I don't need to worry too much

IPAD is a remote

Phone is a remote

Lose Sky Remote :

IPAD has sky app that can change channels

Phone has sky app that can change channels

Normally remote turns up eventually - usually one of my kids has hidden it to pee of their siblings!!

I once lost my remote - looked everywhere.

I had taken my jacket off and chucked it on the sofa.

someone chucked the remote - landed straight in the pocket.

I hung the jacket up later

Didn't find it til next morning when I put the jacket on again to go to work!!!

Not lost, but the day I purchased a new TV my spaniel jumped onto my lap and knocked the new remote off the sofa into my pint of Speckled Hen, it was dead, so batteries out and on the radiator, then on ebay for a new one. As soon as new one arrived I don't know why but I tested the old one with new batteries. It worked, and still does! Oh well, I've got a spare for next time. I feel your pain.

Mine normally turns up in a toys box or a somewhere totally unthought off ie: a kitchen drawer or cupboard or even under a pillow, kept there for safe keeping in one's eyes.

Good luck searching or you could just pick up a replacement remote from Argos. I have done this with my Sky remote that often goes missing or gets 'broken'.

Parenthood, What FUN Yeah :)

Most new Samsung phones have a IR emitter that can control most TVs, I regularly use mine to change channels and confuse my son. It remember the location where your tv is and puts the controls up on the lock screen once you're there which is nice :)

About a million years ago, I went to my brother's wedding in Darkest Cornwall. My then wife found the TV remote in her handbag when we got there.

Our lodger was not best pleased; he'd turned the house inside out looking for it while we were away!

I've got a talk talk youview box. Used to have sky, but to save money....

hmmm, on ebay (like I said on original post) £20 buy it now. Straight from talk talk just under £12 inc p&p.

Maybe they think you'll look on ebay first, as I did :p

@zouros we lost the remote when my son was about the same age as yours. He was going through a 'posting phase'. After a couple of days we had a brainwave and went through the bin bags... he had posted it in the kitchen swing bin :(

Or in the washing machine / dish washer / tumble dryer or the sorts.

Got a two year old and he on the odd occasion throws stuff in the bin or the sorts

Slipped down the side or back of the sofa between the cushions, under the sofa , fallen behind the tv stand ( unless the telly is wall mounted of course ) in which case ignore that.

Although we normally ask him a few times and then he goes off and gets the remote for us

It definitely isn't in the room that you were in when you thought you had lost it.

Have you searched the whole house? Bins, wastebaskets, dirty clothes baskets?

Sorry @GeekyPete I moved it and hid it under the floorboards in the back room along with the body...

Creepiest comment of the day...

I was going to suggest a coat, I've been known to go to work with the remote in my pocket instead of my phone... (I'm a moron)

My nephew posted our TV remote in the VCR. Do you have a VCR to check? (Does anyone other than me still have one...?!)

I lost the remote for my LG Blu-Ray player for about a week. I managed to find an LG app on the Android app store to stand in for it until it turned up.

4 years later there is a sequel to this story!! I better bring you up yo date first. After buying a second remote, I did indeed find the original remote. It was in attic in with the xmas decs which I found at Christmas time later on that year. On the day in question I hadn’t gone to the attic, honest. Once I found the remote we then had 2 remotes which we kept around by the sofas in the lounge. Until last Monday both remotes were present and then during the course of the day both have gone missing again!! I waited a fews days before buying a third remote which arrived yesterday. Me and wife looked in every place in the lounge and can’t find the other two anywhere!!!
