The Pirates series by Gideon Defoe, hysterical reading...

A quote from The Pirates! in an Adventure with Scientists.

“I should say we’d reach England by Tuesday or thereabouts, with a decent wind behind us. It would be a lot quicker than that if we could just sail straight there, but I was looking at the nautical charts, and there’s a dirty great sea serpent right in the middle of the ocean! It has a horrible gaping maw and one of those scaly tails that looks like it could snap a boat clean in two. So I thought it best to sail around that.’

FitzRoy frowned. ‘I think they just draw those on maps to add a bit of decoration. It doesn’t actually mean there’s a sea serpent there.’

The galley went rather quiet. A few of the pirate crew stared intently out of the portholes, embarrassed at their Captain’s mistake. But to everyone’s relief, instead of running somebody through, the Pirate Captain just narrowed his eyes thoughtfully.

That explains a lot,’ he said. ‘I suppose it’s also why we’ve never glimpsed that giant compass in the corner of the Atlantic. I have to say, I’m a little disappointed.”

Yes, I did buy the Humble Bundle eBook deal when it was available.

Same here, still only halfway through the books included in that bundle. A few good reads while I'm between other more mainstream books. Esp liked Pirate Cinema by Cory Doctorow, I've read a few of his other books and generally like the less surreal ones.

Currently reading through the Game of Thrones series (onto book 3). One of my preferred authors is Peter F Hamilton, he writes some great Sci-Fi but many of his books take a while to get into while it sets the scene and back story.

Another vote for Douglas Adams and Terry Pratchett as well. When ever I've an hour or so to waste and I'm near a library I drop in and read a bit of Terry Pratchett.

If you want an exceptionally well built fantasy world which is totally different from most fantasy series then Steven Erickson is definitely worth a read.

I loved China Mieville's Perdido Street Station and have just finished World War Z (which is very different from the film)

Those are both great books. Have read them many times and they just don't seem to get old.

Have to admit - this one is actually quite interesting! It was the ITIL Foundation one that was just so incredibly dull and boring - it was when I fell asleep on the tube and nearly missed my stop, I decided it was time to give up and read something better!

Highly recommend John Grisham, and Warm Bodies the novel is really good too!

I am currently rereading "The lord of the rings". In winter I saw the "Hobbit. An unexpected journey" and wanted to refresh all the story in my mind. So where the Hobbit is, there is The lord of the rings :) I think these books are much deeper as some people may think. They are based on eternal topics like love, friendship, kindness, evil, peace and war, vices and so on. But at the same time these stories are rather lyrical becouse of poems, songs, legends that are there. That is why I love them so much.

Basically, I love hostorical novels and dramas. I love english, french and american literature. Jack London, Ch. Dickens, V. Hugo, J.Ostin and many others. I love how authors show their time, their historical epochs, people and characters.

Having finished reading a bunch of awesome but slightly obscure sci-fi/fantasy books I thought I'd give the new Dan Brown a try - Garbage. I'm hating it. Reading it is like wading through mud. The writing is trite and cliché, clunky and difficult to engage with. If I could get a refund on a Kindle book I would... (actually, I might check if that is even possible...)

Bought World War Z and The Reluctant Fundamentalist on Friday, both are good reads.

Finished The Last Man by Vince Flynn on Sunday on the drive back from camp - good book and like the main character too.

Also managed to get a hold of an old copy of Animal Farm which I'm just flicking through now - seems appropriate for work!

I'm always looking for good sci-fi to read!

I've just read Simon Morden's Petrovitch trilogy (it was on special offer on Amazon) - science fiction, with lots of swearing (in Russian). I'm now on the fourth book in the trilogy (?), where things are getting a bit daft - the hero of the story has already invented anti-gravity, zero-point energy and hard AI but is still running around the place getting shot at rather than using any of his inventions to full effect. Still makes for a good read, though, even if half the fun is spotting the inconsistancies in the physics involved.

What were these? I'm always looking for good sci-fi to read!

I'm a bit of a sucker for the Takashi Kovacs series from Richard Morgan - brutal, weird and downright graphic in places but I can't seem to put them down. I get pulled into the world without even trying. I also just finished reading the Magicians series by Lev Grossman - very obscure and odd and I will admit the first two were better than the last but again I was gripped. I ADORE the Hunger Games trilogy and have a re-read of that fairly frequently but somehow I stumbled across the Mistborn series by Brandon Sanderson - thoroughly loved this too. Blake Charleton's 'Spellwright' series is good. Not even sure if it's an adult book but I enjoyed them all the same - just missing book 3 :-( Don't think it's been published yet.

Well, Dan Brown's new book started to go down hill, and fast. I've given up on it and have resumed A Game Of Thrones instead.
