The story of the sorceress who turned Odysseus' men to swine. Alright, but didn't grab me. The writing style made the whole thing feel like one of those third party dreams where you are half asleep, though I'm guessing that it was going for "timeless and mythical".

Just finished reading the entire 8 book series of Deeds of Paksenarrion & Paladins Legacy by Elizabeth Moon

Was a good series if you don't mind magical/middle age style stories.

Just finished "Quartered Safe Out Here" by George McDonald Fraser. (The guy who wrote the "Flashman" books).

A (not very PC) memoir of his time as Lance Corporal with the14th Army in Burma. Fairly short and very good. Most books of this type are written by officers, but he wasn't one at the time.

Was mentioned as worth reading on the "We Have Ways of Making you Talk" podcast which I highly recommend for any WW2 history geeks who have not come across it yet.

I was re-reading the first wheel of time book when this pandemic kicked off.

Just finished book 3 last night. The aim being to have them all done before the tv series airs, hopefully towards the end of the year.

 

They're awfully good books and on the re-read you notice all the little events/characters Jordan set up early on that pay dividends towards the end.

 

Superb stuff.

I’ve just read the complete H2G2 trilogy for the first time since I was a teenager. In fact, it may even have been the first time I’ve ever read all 5* books, as I don’t think Mostly Harmless had even been published last time.

 

Pure genius!

re-started a sci-fi book on my kindle today

 

it is OK but with some seriously annoying classic space/physics problems

 

apparently their space ship (which is quite small) was hit by several blast waves from an explosion on a wreck they were scavenging from - in space??????

 

and then they were hit by some wreckage when trying to rescue someone in space by doing very precise manoeuvrers - but didn't get knocked off course

 

they also seem to have projectile weapons (guns basically) that manage to shoot a bullet out the front without the shooter moving backwards while in zero gravity

 

 

 

 

no idea why I got this - it was probably either free or very cheap but still you would think people could get the basics right - or at least consistent!!

After my Hitchhikers binge, I trawled through my books looking for Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency, but could only find The Long Dark Tea-time of the Soul.

 

Instead, I read Stig of the Dump (meh) before moving on to 'Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?' by Philip K. Dick (which is well worth a look if you haven't read it). While the basic concept is the same as Blade Runner, it is a very different narrative. The character of Rachael Rosen is a complete contrast to the submissive Rachael in the film.

 

I'm now reading C. S. Lewis's 'The Magician's Nephew', before working my way through the rest of The Chronicles of Narnia.

I've read all the books. I like the Myron Bolitar series and he did some aimed at teenagers with Myron's nephew Mickey Bolitar.

 

Have you watched The Stranger on Netflix or Safe from a couple of years ago?

I can read on my tablet on holiday but really do prefer the real thing

I've watched both The Stranger and Safe, yep! Loved them both. I believe he's got a deal with Netflix to produce a lot more drama's so fingers crossed they are as good!

 

Over the weekend I finished another book by Harlan, 'Stay Close' - definitely one of my favourites!
