Oldest IT equipment in your School?

I might win this one, while the science tech was clearing the prep lab out she gave me a box with a zx81 spectrum which is sat on the desk at work.

 

For the curious it was released March 1981!

A serial mouse

 

Well the mouse I use every day is a serial mouse, it just works off the universal serial bus.

Oldest in ours I've found is an old Celeron laptop running W98. Booted it up out of interest...by the time it had finished booting 10 minutes later I had lost interest

 

My last school still had several Acorns setup ready for use (but they wernt) until 2006ish...couldn't understand why the teachers had let them sit in their classrooms for so long

Off the top of my head I'd say probably the HP 4050 printer in ICT - I was told it was a couple of years old when I started here in 2004!

 

and it will last about 100x longer than any of the new equivalents HP have made as they are so cheap and plasticy I am just taking some of them out after millions of pages and over 10 years in service for us and the previous owners.

 

Our oldest bit of tech is probably the old Plasma Screen in the dining hall (we had a pair one has died) or maybe the 22" CRT Info Screens (only 1 remaining out of three as one died and one had an accident during the major building works and never recovered.....) or maybe it could be the CAT5 cabling and some of the last manky 40 year old phone wiring floating around the site..... Desktop PC wise we have a few 3GHz P4s floating around running display screens and things

In 2009 I retired an HP LaserJet 2.

We have a RML 380Z although it has been stored carefully somewhere :-/

 

We've got a couple in a cupboard still if you want one!! And a couple of other older computer devices. Not really sure when they date back to or what they are!

We still use an AS400, GX1 (for low bit campus radio streaming), a handful of HP 5s, a handful of HP 4000/4050.

Oldest desktop wise is a Pentium D 2.8ghz, still have a few of those around.

 

Oldest laptop is probably an RM based P4 with windows 2000 on which i use purely for reconfiguring switches with serial cables.......i really need to get myself a usb to serial adaptor but the RM laptop was one that was never used (teacher had it before i worked there, ended up in a cupboard, came back to us in immaculate condition) and it's actually surprisingly quick and it'll probably stay that way so long as i never connect it to the internet

 

Oldest server, still using a HP DL320G5 as our digital signage server.

Oldest PC in use currently: RM-branded P4s with 512 MB of RAM.

Oldest in use by September: custom-build Core 2s with 4 GB.

 

Oldest server currently in use: RM-brand... thing from 2006 with a single Xeon and 2 GB RAM.

Oldest by September: HP DL580 G5s w/quad-core Xeons and 16/32 GB RAM (old, but still powerhouses).

 

Oldest thing we have: Probably an OMR machine from 1984 that I found under a desk. Apparently came as part of the school's first(?) SIMS contract; what really got me was that it's still sealed in packaging!!

At least they didn't just bin them, had a teacher here complaining about no computers in her classroom. Vapid simpleton had just chucked all the computers because they 'were slow' or 'did not work', not that she had told anyone that could help.

Got to be several Linksys switches - hard to convince that even if they are still working they would still be worth replacing. Got an electrical rewire ongoing at present so suspect the post 2005 beasties might make the decision themselves post trying to switch them back on. Last year though we found the keys for several storage areas the now retired Deputy Head (original IT Supremo) had stored redundant kit in, many, many, BBC's and even older kit with hoofing great CRT monitors by the dozen - ouch my back:(

We've got 2x Dell 2600 Servers here, all the SCSI drives are dead so they are sitting under my desk waiting to go to Server heaven.

 

Although I may strip out the cases and custom build a server.... The cases are solid!!

Got a few old bits kicking around, I recently retired a Laserjet 6L manufactured in 1998(just takes too much paper and hasn't got a usb port) and I'm about to retire a HP VP6325 from 2004 - its not *that* old but pretty good for a projector considering it out lived our projectors from 2007 & 8. Until about a month ago the image was pretty good.

 

Other than that we've still got a Dell Optiplex G1 running some ancient library software that only works with win 2000 and below at our pre prep site
