Honestly remote isn't very remote no more than about 250m, its a difficult path to cable as there are some quite tall metal framed structures in the way, but I should still be able to get a good line of sight. I was more looking at 5GHz line of sight WiFi based bridges, but open to advice on this. I've got no fixed budget on this per-say so long as its a saving on 3K and reliability is worth it. Thanks

Hello All, I am in the process of setting up a remote office for 8 users (8x Desktops and 8x VOIP phones), I was planning on getting a fiber optic line put in, but after getting quotes averaging 3K for this I want to investigate alternatives. Would a wireless point-of-sight bridge be suitable. Its the VOIP quality that's my main concern, I don't suppose all 8 will be on the phone at the same time, but 3 or so could be simultaneously whilst someone else is downloading a large file etc. Would a decent enough wireless bridge be suitable for this? Please advise?
  3. Some of the Cisco Meraki technologies look really interesting. I am especially interested in what they refer to as anayltics, but I would class as tracking. Essentially the wifi hotspots listen for probe requests directed to themselves, or other access points, calculate the RSSI of the client and use this to I assume trilaterate there location with other access points. This allows the network admin to see physically where devices are as they roam around the premises. I was wondering if there was any open source alternative to this. For example can airbase-ng be configured to do this? Or are there any competing commercial options for this? I know some retail outlets do similar things with Bluetooth devices. Hello All, I know MS SQL is the most popular choice for educational networks, but I am really impressed with some of the regex like pattern matching, and other cool features that Oracle can provide. I've also heard that it can deal better with a heavy load. Just wondered if anyone out there uses it in there network, and how it performs. Also R.E. licensing, where on earth can I purchase it from, MS SQL server is relatively easy to obtain, but it seems like no one sells oracle. I know I can just download it and start using, but how can I buy a license.

  7. Realize this may be controversial but: Teach 'em C or C++, a proper language that they can take to an employer. Heck even C# if you have to, still much preferred to VB or mere high level interpreted languages such as Java. It will really help to inspire those with potential and weed out those without passion. Just my thoughts!

  9. I don't think anyone likes it at first, and that is the problem. I just don't understand why people are settling with it, and putting up with it. Why not hold back at Win 7 & Server 08R2, or Ubuntu? Consumers don't seem to like metro, and that is a problem for M$, and very evident in there sales figures, Windows 'Blue'/9 needs to shape up and address these problems, or M$ will loose their already falling market share to the likes of Apple, and Linux. Rant over!

  11. Just because it is running OS X and is in a fancy box, doesn't make it any less of a computer. What even is a computer today? A Laptop, Netbook, Tablet, Mobile Phone, MP3 Player, Calculator are all devices capable of performing computations, technically making them computers. MAC, or PC; its all a computer.

  14. Can I suggest instead you look into a VNC type option. There are even some open and free implementations. I find NSS to be riddled with bugs and security holes.

  17. Bittorrent uses a lot of ports, in fact bittorrent can use any port. But it mostly uses ports with very big numbers. My suggestion would be blocking all ports and selectively allowing as required. However, you must note that port sharing options on your router often only relate to incoming connections, allowing all outgoing connections.

  19. I think getting an Arduino would be better investment, and then you can teach the kids to build electronic circuit and programming an embedded micro controller. From what I can tell the Pi cant let you fiddle about with the circuits.

Whats the best way to setup one of those neat site based TV solutions. e.g. having a TV that can run power points, videos etc. Allowing centralized management (e.g. from one PC we can control schedule). The best way I have come up with is a dedicated separate PC running a webpage with this content over HDMI to a TV. But this solution seems error prone, monotonous, buggy, and ineffective. Maybe one of those raspberry pi's could do a similar task? But are there any vendor solutions? or any better ideas? Thanks
  21. I think SYNAC is referring to the software being 16-bit rather than the OS. Win XP supported running 16-bit app's, but this has been removed since vista (I think, might be 7?). This is kinda like how a 64-bit OS can run 32-bit programs. Running it via XP mode may work? Otherwise running under a VM, or vendor updates may be your only options.
  22. I don't know if this is even possible but: Can I run an Apache server (under Ubuntu Server) hosting a moodle install with AD authentication. Then using Integrated Windows Authentication to authenticate users automatically (with Firefox browser). I know that Integrated Windows Authentication will mean nothing to ubuntu, but can the AD authentication module of moodle seamlessly pass the IWD information to the AD server? Thus, ultimately authenticating the user without them logging in to web page. Thanks
  23. Hi, Does anyone know of any kind of system that we could use to tag iPads with, so that if they leave the room it will set off an alarm. Kind of like the security tags on products at store. I noticed that at apple store they are chained to the bench, would prefer a system where devices were still portable around the room. Thanks

Let me get this strait, would this work If I get a Netgear GSM7328FS at the core of my network (one of these at the core) Connected Port 1 to a AD Domain Controller (via Fibre NIC Card), Port 2 to an Exchange Server (via Fibre NIC Card) Then connected from a SFP port to a SFP port on a Netgear GS748T (Lots of these around the site) Then connected from the GS748T over Gigabit Ethernet to a workstation Would this workstation now have 1GBPs speed communicating with my AD Domain Controller? And would this be a good, sustainable network? Many Thanks
  25. Not strictly true I don't think. All traffic on the internet is traveling at the same speed, e.g. when you download a file your request isn't sent to server any quicker than someone on a dial up connection instead you can fit more data through your pipe leading to a quicker download of that 100MB file. A dial up user is still getting the file at the same speed as you they are just not getting as much of it concurrently, makeing it take longer to download.
