I just wouldn't, find another way to achieve what you want. We've always told staff that it can't be done, it can but it's a pain because the shortcuts get picked up by staff accounts and buried in roaming profiles. The problem then comes when someone wants to change the shortcut and you have stupid amounts of hassle trying to kill off the old one.

Are home areas / profile areas individually shared or hang off a higher level share ? If the latter do people have the rights to traverse from the share to their personal folder ?

ServiceDesk Plus will do what you want. It has free versions that will probably cover your needs. It allows you to set up sites and teams. We share it with our Data Admin team but have it set up so we don't see each other's stuff.

Yep, that's exactly why you don't want to link buildings by copper. The lightning issue is a potential biggie too, although if your buildings are reasonably close together it probably won't be a problem as it will hit the buildings for preference which should be adequately grounded. However back in the 90s I used to work on an airport site which had several buildings linked by copper. We had several instances of lightning ground strike which would penetrate the ground and follow the path of least resistance (the copper cable) and blow kit up in the comms rooms.

That's a good example of the sort of thing I mean by not skimping on your infrastructure. By using an unqualified installer you've ended up with a damaged cable you can't trust. What are the odds that the one working link you have is 100% OK ? About nil I'd say.

That's a common theme in schools ! I'd still stick to ripping out significantly old cables because then you can say "yes but all the old stuff was taken out so you'll have to pay to have new installed" when they change their minds, more hassle true but you get new stuff installed. In my experience such major changes are often triggered by some funding secured from an external source. In the past I've been able to fund many significant pieces of infrastructure done on the back of such projects. "We're going to build a new building, great ! However you'll need to fund a new core network switch in order to handle the increased load."

Reuse of the cables would be dependant on your confidence in the quality and age of them. If they are old I'd be inclined to get shot and use new for any future requirements. But otherwise this is a good idea.
