  1. Yes you can, there's settings for this on the ESS configuration. Hopefully going to give it a try today.
  2. Funnily enough I'm looking at this very thing myself which is how I've ended up at this thread. One of the issues we hit was that the Meru support for 'public' devices is pretty poor, no link to AD, no transparent proxying. We're going to get around most of the issues by using a Smoothwall firewall which does both and will also act as a DHCP server. I'm not sure about using Meru on a VLAN, do I need to set up the VLAN on all intermediate switches ? I know you normally would, just wondering how the APs talk to the controller. As far as timing goes, I'm not sure that can be done with what you seem to have available. You *could* set up a daily guest user, that's a drag but I can't see any other timings available on Meru.
  3. We're in the process of migrating between internet connections, this will also involve changing our URLs for external facing services. Does anyone know if I can run a service simultaneously over two links to two URLs from one server? For instance we have a Facilty ePortal server with a external facing URL. I'd like to be able to set up another URL over the other link and have it respond to that too. The stumbling block seems to be that the server will only use one default gateway. We've got a Smoothwall operating on our new link, but the old one is at the mercy of our LEA. Does anyone have any ideas ? I'm suspecting this isn't easily done if at all.
  4. I'm interested in finding out how other people run their IT Support teams. Do people have any system ? We run a FITS helpdesk and have procedures in place for most other work and run a rota for dealing with incoming calls but we're reviewing how we make things hang together as a whole. I'm interested in - Do people have any SLAs or information on how they prioritise incoming jobs ? How do you find time for your team to work on larger scale projects and background tasks ? How do get people to not simply focus on the latest thing to come in, ignoring longer-standing calls ? How do you develop your teams' skills ? How do you keep people happy ? Or at least stop them getting too p*ss*d off at staff ? (I know, I know - beer) I'm also interested in any other nifty hints for running a team, keeping good relations with staff and making sure things are running smoothly. I'd be grateful for any ideas people. Thanks David
  5. I'm getting a quote for a contractor to do it, hopefully the price will not compare too badly with a VMWare installation training course ;-)
  6. Thanks for your reply. How odd, I read that article but missed that line. I'm trying to update a VMWare vCenter server. I wanted to upgrade our installation of VMWare from 4.1 to 5.0 and the vCenter server needs to be running 2008 R2 as a prerequisite. Looks like suddenly it's a non-trivial task . . .
  7. I've got a Windows 2003 Standard (32 bit) server that I want up upgrade to Windows 2008 R2. I need to do an upgrade rather than a full reinstall as I need to keep the software that's on it. When I boot from my 2008 installation media and try to upgrade it says I have to run the installation from within Windows. When I try to run it from within Windows it says "The installation disc isn't compatible with your version of Windows. To upgrade, you need the correct installation disc." Is there a different version of the 2008 R2 media for upgrades ? If not does anyone know what I'm doing wrong ?
  8. Has anyone here paid for the 'Facility Health Check' ? Facility Health Check | Serco Learning. They want £950 (and it's a special offer) and I'm uncertain what the benefits are, has anyone tried it ? Thanks David
  9. Thanks for the replies. I'll have a look at some of these options. We currently use MMC but we've got over 20 servers and issues on some of the minor servers can easily go unnoticed.
  10. Can anyone recommend some software to making viewing server event logs easier. We've got quite a lot of servers now and it's a drag to check all the logs. There are some applications out there that will read server logs remotely and give a neat overview/summary. Is anyone using any of these ? I'm prepared to spend a bit of money to make my life easier if required ! Thanks
  11. While I'm not going to shed any tear for Paxman, it's a pretty typical politician trick. Get a question you don't like ? Divert attention onto something else.
  12. This download doesn't seem to be working. I get "500 Internal Server Error"
  13. From that page - "The ASR backup option uses an undocumented command line parameter of the Microsoft Backup Utility, as scheduled ASR backups do not seem to be documented or supported by Microsoft. " I'd love to know what the parameter is.
  14. Does anyone know if you can automate Windows Server 2003 ASR backups in any way ? I'd like to be able to run batch files to automate this but can't see to find a switch to do an ASR backup. Does it have to be done from the GUI ? Thanks David
