Does anyone have a policy of what should occur with student owned laptop power supplies if they want to use them at school ? On paper here they should be PAT tested before use, but this rule is just plain ignored by both students and staff and I wondered what everyone else's experience was ? I'm not a great believer in rules that are pretty much unenforceable, but I'm unsure what the legal implications may be of it being ignored (as no doubt will everyone else, PAT testing seems shrouded in uncertainty, we seem to get a different answer from every 'expert' we ask a question of). So how do other schools handle student owned PSUs and the like ?

I have never been told this. We used RM's migration service (which was very good BTW) and as part of this they set up some rules for us using mail flow.

I'm worried if they've changed this. We're using Mail flow / mail rules for students on an A2 licence. And we have a rule that blocks mail coming from outside the domain to members of a selected group.

I wonder if anyone can help me understand whether I'm doing something wrong here or not. I'm connecting to our Office 365 tenancy and trying to bulk modify some mailboxes. It all connects fine, when I start running an Exchange script it prompts me for credentials and then starts working its way through the mailboxes, however after a short period of time the authentication seems to drop and I'm re-prompted for credentials, unfortunately while this is happening it fails on a number of mailboxes so even if I authenticate it has missed many mailboxes. I can run things fine for basic Office 365 things, but when I try Exchange it always drops out. Am I doing something wrong ? Do we have a problem with 365 ? Do we have a problem with our internet link ? I'd be really grateful for any ideas people have. Nope they are still going, I visited the factory in April, although they were saying they didn't have the volume of orders they used to get which made me wonder how long they could keep going. A little sad because they're about the only UK based PC factory left.

OK I'm thinking of building our school network again from scratch and I'm looking for pointers on where to start for a vanilla network. What tools would be good to have ? Should we engage some consultants to help ? Anyone got a plan of how to proceed ? The backend side I'm fairly confident with, Server 2008/12, VMWare etc should be no issue, but we need tools to build computers, lock them down, deploy software etc, etc. I know most of this stuff is built into Windows but 'built in' MS stuff is sometimes not the best way to go. Basically I'm at the very first stages of planning this and so I'd be grateful for any useful pointers here.

I'm looking for a little help here as I'm getting contradictory advice at the moment. We're currently stuck at the planning stage of an Office 365 implementation. Currently we have an onsite Exchange 2010 server for staff and no pupil email provision. We want to set up Office 365 with the same domain name as our email server for staff and pupils. We're not ready right now to migrate staff email off our server into Office 365. I am being told that our MX records can be set up such that if our Exchange server is set at highest priority and our 365 domain a lower priority email will try the first one and if the account doesn't exist there it will then try the second one. I didn't think this was how MX records worked, I thought it was an all or nothing proposition, either the server is available to accept the email or it wasn't. Also if anyone has any suggestions as to how we could run this sort of set up (pupils in 365, staff email in local Exchange but staff still having accounts in 365) I'd be grateful. At the moment I'm thinking the only real way forward is to leave the MX records pointing to our Exchange server so we can at least get going on setting up Office 365 with affecting staff email, and then migrate staff email to 365 over the summer and decommission our 2010 server.

We seem to have a weird problem. We're using Smoothwall for BYOD and it's working well with most devices. But iPods running iOS6 cannot connect. They get the login page, but when users have entered their details the 'login' button seems to do nothing. Presumably its an iOS 6 issue but it works fine with an iPad on iOS 6. iPods with earlier versions of iOS are fine too.

Whoops. I'd added a USB controller to the VM but forgot to add a USB Device, it sees a USB pen with the bkf file just fine now

I'm trying to recover a failed Windows 2003 physical server into VMWare, although I can get the ASR recovery running I cannot find a way of presenting the BKF file to the server. Additional hard drives are not seen, network connectivity is inactive and I can't get it to recognise a USB pen. Does anyone have any ideas on how I can get it to see the bkf file ?

Just thought I'd add a little to this. I've done a little investigating and I have come to the conclusion that GM 8.1 Lite has been deliberately messed about with to make it almost impossible to network install on Windows 7. It sticks files all over the place, in weird profile areas etc. I have yet to heard of anyone getting this working on Windows 7 Yoyo Games produce an MSI for licensed versions that neatly drops all these files into the program files directory, not scattering all over the place. A few small permissions tweaks (listed in their tech blogs) and it seems to work. Conclusion - if you want it, you're going to have to use the paid version.

There's no provision that I am aware of for setting access timings on Meru SSIDs or VLANs. I'd suggest you are probably looking in the wrong place, something like access times can be set in AD.

Yes it worked fine with no issues. Simply define the VLAN ID number in MERU and specify it in the security settings.

Well we're on Exchange 2003 so we don't have EMC, but in ESM it's already set in Recipient Policy. The default email addresses is set that's no problem, but it's not overriding Outlook settings for existing users.

Sadly no. Neither of the options seems to have worked. If I set up a new user/mailbox it all works fine. It's definitely something embedded in existing users' roaming profiles. If I wipe a user's profile it changes to the (correct) default email address next time they start Outlook (configured by PRF file), but I'd rather not do that as it loses a whole load of other settings.

Thanks, the article doesn't quite cover the situation but I'll give it a go and see what happens. It looks hopeful.

We are changing our staff email domain soon, the new one is all set up with MX records defined, additional email domains defined on Exchange (2003) and AD etc. Mail for the new domain arrives correctly into mailboxes so everything is looking good. The problem I have is that when in Outlook 2010 the default email address that it sends from is the old domain, even when the new email address is set as the user's default in AD. Anyone know how I can change this globally ? When I use OWA it functions correctly so it's something in the user profile I guess.
