Definitely this. Never skimp on your infrastructure costs, it will come back to bite you. Look to get cabling installed that will support 10Gb even if you have no intention of using it.

My major concern is your statement that you have eight fibre cores but that only one pair works. That implies to me that there may be degradation / damage to the fibre and that your one fibre connection could be at risk also. Another thing you don't mention is where the network connection is between. If it is between two buildings you definitely should be using fibre not copper, but barring that I could definitely go for the two new copper connections. Two is better than one, new is better than old and your existing fibre connection may have degradation issues.

Presumably they've been coiled in roof spaces because they're going to be reconnected at some point ? If not then I'd not only want to unpatch them but get rid of the connections in the server room and preferably the cables in their entirety too. Why would you be happy with connections to your switches that go nowhere ? It might not be causing an issue right now but it could well cause confusion and extra work in the future. It's the sort of dotting the i's and crossing the t's job that you should definitely be doing. If they are being reconnected then I'd still consider unpatching them temporarily. At the least whoever reconnects them will need to unpatch them in order to test their work. I don't think there's any way to cross-connect the wires that might damage the switch, nor is the voltage harmful to humans, but I'd still do it. At the least it will give you a chance to document and confirm your connections once they are redone.

I'd feel the same as you in that it seems to be allowing them to marginally undercut the opposition but still make as much profit as possible. Broadly I wouldn't discuss other suppliers quotes, in fact one might argue you'd be divulging a commercial confidence. I might be prepared to discuss who I else I was getting a quote from, but not actual pricing.

Turns out it was mostly caused by iffy permissions on the staff home area share. A lack of traverse right which meant it was hanging for a while when trying to access profile / appdata type information. Mostly corrected but I'm not entirely happy with the performance still. Most of the shares are run via DFS and I'm not convinced its working properly, regardless it seems to be an extra layer of complexity that achieves very little so I'm planning on ditching it over the summer. This is doing my head in. Affects only staff and only on PCs they already have a profile on. Deleting local profiles seems to help but I have cases where it hasn't. I'm thinking it's something to do with folder redirects. I was thinking it was the AppData redirect but I turned that off for myself and it didn't help (though it did lose a load of settings). The baffling thing is that it seemed to come on all of a sudden, it would make more sense if it had occurred gradually. I just can't pin down anything that might have changed nor explain why this is happening at all.

Thanks for the thoughts everyone, some useful stuff there. We've got something of a breakthrough in that students don't seem to be affected by the issue so it's looking like it might be a profile issue since staff are redirected and students aren't.

What AV were you using ? We're using Sophos. If it was checking things behind my back I'd expect to see some sort of loading on the server but I'm not.

It's a network wide problem, not a PC specific issue. There's no related info in the PCs log.

Could be but can't find anything, also looking at clock issues.

Thanks. Thought about this, but don't think so. File servers are set to not do on access scanning. Tried turning all on access scanning off on some PCs and it didn't change.

We’ve been suffering serious performance problems on our Windows 10 / 2016 network since yesterday lunchtime. Particular symptoms are – Slow login Very slow opening of documents on the network Downloads failing to start This seems to be independent of loading on the network. None of the servers seem to have a high CPU utilisation Network switches show no unusual traffic PCs show no unusual loading I’d be grateful for any thoughts.

Hi Guys, We've had a requirement dropped on us to set up an online file sharing service. All straight forward enough except there's an important requirement that we must be able to track what files were downloaded by who and preferably when (al users accessing this system will have their own login.) So does anyone have any ideas how we could do this ? Can it be done with 365 ? G-Suite ? Any other system ?

Broadly speaking the issues seem to have declined, possibly due to improved firmware. There is one issue which is ongoing in that Chromebooks seem to corrupt DHCP entries changing them to BAD_ADDRESS, never found a solution for this other than cleaning the DHCP data base periodically.

Seemed to have got it working-ish. What seems to work is to make sure the SSID isn't hidden and instead of picking the SSID off the presented list, click on 'other' and add the details manually. Will sometimes come back with incorrect key error but if you persist it seems to work eventually.
