We go for internal here, the same reasons for TechMonkey (same LEA). One comment that sticks out in my head is that when the net was down, I had a "Moodle is obviously brilliant if it still up!" and I feel that is due to the fact it is hosted internally.

We run Eclipse.net on a VM with 2 cpu's, 4gb of ram and it flies well.

I tend to encourage staff to use the QRS (and sometimes *place* them in a central place that they all know where they are...). I also have created certain guides specific to our school (like most of you have) to do with Assessment Manager and Lesson Monitor, especially taking registers when you have been assigned cover/or a supply teacher. I know it is easy to understand how to take them, but every littlle helps as they say, you'd be suprised!

Even though Dell *say* they won't support it, it still runs! Here we run two virtual machines, one being mysql one apache, both with 6gb of ram.

I would go for the clean profiles, we moved the appdata out of the folders into a seperate share and it was a nightmare ... various files inside the appdata were locked. I always now do clean profiles and redirected appdata to another location. @john - I wrote a small fix for the adobe issue, i'll clean it up and post it....

Try one of the HP proliant ML series ... have one of those here for some testing purposes. HP ProLiant ML110 G6 Tower Server - 2.8GHz - 1GB.. | Ebuyer.com We brought lots of extra ram for it too ... think we've got 8gb in ours.

Hi there An interesting one from our SIMS operator. She is about to move some groups around, but a reporting session in Profiles is open. A group is moving to their nesxt teacher, but their previous teacher is still completing reports for them. If she moves the year 7 groups, will the teachers still be able to access their old groups for completing/amending reports and will the correct name of the teacher show on the report? If not, what's the work around? If there is one!! Cheers, in anticipation

Hi chsdata, if you are a member of Supportnet there is a file sharing part of Supportnet which is where people post reports, amongst other things that they create.

I will have a look when I get to work as we have some exactly the same. However, what I have done for disabling other items (such as the toushcreen and webcam) is use DevCon from Microsoft and I'm sure you'll be able to do this for the pointing stick. Are all files present? Does that particular user have read/write permissions on the directory? Is it just one user - have you tried some others, or tried setting some more test users up?

I would look at looking at services you could possibly bring in house (if you wanted to!) such as Email etc and work on building them. Alternatively, I would look at some systems you could get your head around to enhance support you offer. For instance, I was in a similar posistion to you and I messed around with SIMS (and a test DB at that!) in my spare time and I now am pretty much a SIMS manager/Assistant IT Manager.

Yes - it would be a good idea to know the MIS software you use. If you use SIMS already - it has registration (if only done by sessions) built in ....

Could be that there is an issue with Crystal reports on the machine? What OS you running? Could be a reinstall of FMS (witn the infastructuresetup!) could be in order....

We only accept incidents logged on the helpdesk. I sent an email out at the beginning of the year, stating how to find the PC number and that we needed detailed helpdesk requests. If we get a request like "5 pcs not working" ... one of us instantly helpdesks back asking for PC names before we touch the call - and if we don't get a reply, we close the call. Hard, but that's the way that they need to learn
