I've used the 11ac Ubiquiti and find it's really good. Not a full site deployment, but for price, expand ability and support ability it is hard to beat. Range seems better than our original Cisco 1142 APs. I'd separate into a few VLANs depending on how you are structured, but think each VLAN would possibly need its own control panel (on a PC or server). Also implemented new Samsung controller, but Ubiquiti is so much easier and cheaper. Easy for BYOD guest as well. (IMHO)

My late mother was concerned about the "mains power" issues which were commonly reported many years ago. There were statistical reports of an increased incidence of cancer through a town in the path of overhead power lines (statistics from a family GP practice with records over years). So when she was looking at a house that had one of those small transformers at the end of the garden, she had it checked out. The field strength (micro teslars) registered within 6 feet was zero, but in the house, the field from the digital clock (the red display mains type) was significant..... And that's a couple of feet away from your head! Yet people 'fear' the overhead pylons more..... And, yes, we give our kids mobile phones to hold by their brains, with wireless enabled, yet join the emotion with wifi in schools.

We just had a new building handed over. Contractor connected the fibre as Tx-Tx and not Tx-Rx because it was 'default'. Appears our existing building was installed as Tx-Rx (I'd crossover), so simply had this changed. As we were using LC-LC fibres, we couldn't check this for ourselves. I had assumed GBICs operated auto-sense like "everything" does these days........ They don't!

You can limit the amount of RAM allowed to SQL, so that system is left with sufficient. Our MIS server has 24GB, of which 8GB is reserved for system, by allocating max of 16GB to Sql.

I have just been charged "an arm and three legs" for integration with ParentPay. It took them 90 minutes - that's all.

It's something like using the conditional if then else in Sims which allows you to assign colours. Ages since I did this... Used to do rising/flat/falling between half terms, and colour this. Just avoid red background as red text till you save your mark sheet looks blank!! Choose a pastel pink shade for red background.

I worry that, I believe, the ability to eMail Profiles from In-Touch is definitely NOT on the road map!! We spend on products such as SLG and In Touch, yet have this significant gap, which is only filled by third parties. (and if they start getting too good, we will drop the incorporated services)

We use gigacloud. It's on the DFE approved list (I think that's the EU jurisdiction etc). Works very well for us. I upload things like the Sims and FMS BAK files daily for my off site

Impero support ARE still alive, and although we have tremendous problems - suggested that this is because we migrated straight from 5.003 to a much higher version. We are due to receive the new 5.3 although the downer is potentially the vast level of work in removing all traces of the older versions ~ this sounds to be very substantial and could take a great deal of precious (reduced!) resource. (I might add that we have teaching staff who say, why not try "XYZ" as their first reaction to "it's broken" ~ but what they don't consider is whether XYZ would actually be any better; and it's an expensive thing to try... Yes, free trials and all that, but don't take for granted the internal cost of time.... yes, don't take techies for granted!)

Also agree on the Citrix suggestion (as long as your wireless is sound). We use that to get better performance on our ageing laptops. We configure them to launch Wndows, wait for wireless then launch the VDI session.... We have a number of VDI licenses which are generally "staff at home at night", so are available during the day. We did have to rebuild our configuration onto better hosts with SSDs for their performance (originally Dell R710 with old fashined spinning things!!)

I know it may be an obvious question, but is your problem the 'surface' or the WiFi? We have a Cisco wireless deployed, but there 'were issues' in how it was configured - resolved those and found it got better. First Dell tablet didn't work till Cisco WLAC ios was updated to be compatible.... Laptops dropping off because 'number of devices per AP' was set too low, so they kept taking turns 'roaming' while sitting in the same room Then found 'rogue' devices causing co-channel interference ~ one was a wireless visualiser which was sitting on a wrong channel!! Also seen students with Hot-Spot dongles interferring.... How to find these: i) INSSIDER - free. Install on a Windows PC and walk the course ii) WiEye - free on Android. Shows all your network information, WAP MACs and even signal strengths.... (I use an old Android phone)

HTML pages in Word will do it very simply, or, depending what you wish to do, you can set up a WordPress site to use locally as suggested above?? We have 2 QNAP NAS boxes which support web shoting, including installation of WordPress - you can even offer 'admin' pages. Do you use SIMS? If you run Cover, you will find that Cover has an HTML home page etc to display cover internally in a browser.... Same sort of approach

We have SWall UTM-1000 which was sold to us (under BSF implementation) as suitable for our up-to 800 clients. The box isn't upgradeable, and they would now say that it isn't powerful enough for 800 users. Our license was paid to 2019!!! They will let you transfer the license to your own server (one school locally has theirs on a virtual server) - and we do find it does what we need... You'll see some adverse comment when they moved to the Framlinghm release, but to be fair they ARE addressing the safeguarding agenda and improving setp by step. We have a Cisco ASA firewall at our edge (managed by our ISP), and we do also use some additional control within the SWall appliance.

Has your LA taken you through "Pay & Grading"? Ours was abomnible! The roles and their contents looked as though they were written by people who hadn't got a clue about what we did: what we had to know: or, how complex the technology could be ~ depending on the kit that your school used. We had a BSF implementation of leading edge kit; I wouldn't say the implementation was the best (!) however every piece of technology had an assigned specialist engineer (no, make that Engineer). When it was handed over, the level of people who had to manage (mend!) and take it forward with new implementations.... Was lowly graded... And had to learn multiple technologies, say only 2-3 staff. So my 'hobby horse' is that we are Engineers and Technicians - and not just technicians who are viewed in some disparaging manner at times. We should be recognised and treated as professionals, but equally we should have a structure which defines what qualifications you need to be.... Technical assistant (unqualified) Technican Senior technician IT Engineer (there are some degree graduates out there, paid the same as office staff) If they want us to design and implement network extensions, manage large budgets, negotiate purchases (demonstrating 'best value') and all the rest of it..... We should have a structure, and skills should be recognised, just like our graduate teaching colleagues.

For those who want to help their IT Teaching Staff moving forward with the MicroBit - please look at the IET (Institution of Engineering & Technology) who have produced many freely available resources - lesson plans and projects etc..... Your staff should find these a real help. Our employers should try to understand the level of technology we deal with - and we're not just mouse fixers or toner dollies! They need to recognise professional qualification and status.

We are having similar troubles. We have been told that there is an issue with 5.210 which is possibly related to a jump straight from 5.003 when we updated. We have been sent a patch to test which 'should mend it' - and a rather odd comment about 5.003 being hacked, so you needed to get off it??? Didn't understand that - there was no elaboration on this.... ??Hacked maliciously would imply danger; Hacked commercially would initially mean revenue issues only. Do people who have remained on 5.003 have a vulnerability issue? Anyway, we're testing the patch - and working out whether we have to do a whole site uninstall/re-install.

Samsung have some pretty keen prices, and they look like rebadged Cisco at a much lower price. Spoke to another school and their coverage was good and stable, and much cheaper than Cisco. Also much easier to configure
