We bought a Screwfix compressor, air gun and extension hose. Wheel it round on a trolley and just take the hose into the room. High pressure blow of PCs and projectors. All the usual H&S precautions with compressed air. The other issue is that some/many/most cans use highly flammable propellant (or used to) so don’t blow live equipment with a flame thrower!!! Check if you do use them. In reality, the compressor is long term cheapest option.

We do the same for reports (because staff don’t like Profiles), and set up to three paragraphs. How many teachers don’t understand what a paragraph is? They will often split sen tences across two paragraphs! And they’re dropping basic English and Maths........

So you shouldn’t use WFWG3.11 on floppy discs any more then? Just think how quickly that would boot on today’s PCs......

In our school, we insert the school address for such a student. This also identifies to the “seniors” that it is such a student. Real address is in secure paper records. We have always done this where some estranged parents are not to be given addresses, to prevent mistakes!

If I recall, Dropbox personal is free and outside EU/GDPR approved geolocation. The paid one can be specified in UK jurisdiction. We banned ‘staff-found’ applications such as this. Love ‘em or hate them, we bought Sims Teacher App and maintain data control.

What level of support do you want/expect? How much do you want to pay? Operating on a really thin shoestring, place a NAS or similar somewhere you can reach it, and manage yourself..... I have a ‘safe’ at home which holds a NAS which I feed securely from school. Biggest problem with all options is transfer rates and how frequently you need to update? Transfer with encryption also slows things. I have a feed ‘bucket’ at school near my edge, which I feed at local network speeds, then it dribbles out to offsite all day or night long.... EG the Sims DMS takes about 4-5 hours, but it gets there. Similarly SIMS BAK files etc..... My next test will be to see what happens to large image files, such as server images...... We do use a professional service for a few hundred a year for key data daily, but this is akin to carrying tapes offsite as a “just in case” copy

We have used Excellgroup for years - very happy. Increasing from 100/100 to 200/1000 plus SIP to replace our ISDN, and on a new contract for less money annually! Such is the nature of isp pricing these days.... our price includes Cisco ASA and fully managed edge....

I derive the budget of “what the school needs” to keep the estate up to date, and present this to the Chief Bean Counter each November so that they can work on their budget. They then discuss with the Head (who is also my line manager), and subsequently, about now, I get told what to do, and what not to. With current funding, I separately identify dangers of lack of investment so that they can decide how far they want to risk dropping dead. I make it abundantly clear, and they make the choice. I worry about not refreshing the key core hardware - network and servers. They decide, because if you don’t have the cash, you can’t spend it.... but they must realise that every year of lack of funds, and living with your fingers crossed, is a year closer to disaster! And some fell on stoney ground....... but they fund their new iPads etc...

I’d echo all of the above. Teachers (not being personal) are not engineers, and whilst they may be handed the baton of leadership, they must respect and acknowledge the professional skills of the NM, assuming they have been suitably appointed. We went through a phase where “somebody else knew better”, and they soon found they didn’t. They are professionals in their own right, but the wrong field. Also, to have a bit of a rant, we are still seen as what we are not (non-teachers), and often in a deprecating manner.
