Wouldnt recommend doing this daily. The problem you have is the SSD life, each time they are logging in it having to re write data back to the SSD which has a limited write cycle. Same reason why you shouldnt run Defrag on them (should need to on SSD anyway) 40 seconds to log in 10 laptops when i presses enter at the same time. Have profiles stored on the server for pupils and no profile location set for staff. Staff can get in within a few seconds.

I've gone Unifi AP's here. Seem to work well apart from the latest update which knocked out my wireless printers. Our LEA is buying Meraki for the entire city, alot of money being spent. Spoke to another school and they have Meru and its not working well for them.

Original Draft (General Office) Professional presentation The scans look a tiny bit fainter than they actually are but not far of. Lasers are alot better on pictures. Not a printer to be doing your newsletters etc on, more just detention letters with a school logo. As you can see, its a nightmare trying to get it to scan straight on individual sheets, and weve had one jam in 746 pages.

Looking for a movie editor that when you import images and videos it creates a copy of the file in the project rather than just linking to the file. I keep on getting asked to recover work from movie maker as they import photos into the project and then unplug and delete the videos from the camera as they think its saved in the project. Keep saying that you have to keep the files in the same place until you export the project and not just save but i cant get it through to them. Anyone know of a program that does this? Cheers

Just tested it out on one machine and everything came back afters i plugged it back in again including documents. Need to do some more testing to work out what machines it does it on.

Found that with the desktop but with folders like documents that doesnt seem to work. Mapped drives seem to be ok. Word moand saying it cant find some template and all sorts. The app data folder isnt redirected.

Offline files are turned off as i don't want users data on the machines. Some have 50gb in their documents. These should never leave the school and only get unplugged accidentally or if it drops a few packets through the switches.

Looking into Moodle for our school and playing on a test server at the minute. I've created my own basic theme about a year ago which is basic but looks OK. Problem is that its a bit outdated and doesn't use alot of the new features that you can see in a theme like essential. Out of all of the online themes, essential seems like the most promising. I cant seem to get it looking good though. Tried playing with the settings and colours. Has anyone used this theme in a live VLE? How did it end up? What colours did you alter? Cheers, Dan

Hi, Have folder redirection setup for desktops, documents etc. works really well apart from the occasional time where the redirected folder suddenly stop showing. If I unplug the network cable when a user is logged in then this causes the redirection to break and so far the only solution is a restart. I'm assuming the times when it happens randomly is a temporary network to that one machine. Is there any way to get it to reapply all the folders or to stop this happening without enabling offline files.? Causes a whole load of issues with different programs. All staff have read abilities of the shared folder and the staff private folder, they then have full control over their own folder. Thanks.

Just had a demo of the Lenovo tiny pc's. These things are solid and flatter than the Nuc's, they are wider though. Look so much more reliable and sturdy than the nucs.

Yeah, i think its one of those things, if you compare them together then you will notice but if you are always used that then it looks perfect , We are supposed to be getting a free trial of a x5** soon. Much faster, wonder how that's going to do. I think the x4 series is perfect though. Not tried presentation mode. Bet that looks stunning if professional looks good. Have you seen the borderless counter? Didnt think this could do it.

Thanks SonOfSanta, Weve just got a x476 in and it seems brilliant so far. I did a bit of secret testing between professional and general office quality modes and didn't notice pixelation although i wasn't looking for it. I was looking to compare the difference with the brightness of colours. The colours are definatly better in professional mode but that not to say they are bad in general office. General office is a bit fainter and comparing the two prints side by side, you can see. Our ICT teacher is impressed with it, a full page photo she showed me looked faint to me but i think thats just because i know. I've installed it onto the server and defaulted everything to general office, will see what happens. The only thing our ICT teacher has said about is how it doesnt stack printed pages neatly. It fires them out so fast and the ink must be slightly damp that the pages dont stack properly. I've turned on quiet mode now as its supposed to slow it down so will have to try it out. I want to get a hair dryer on it to see how it copes with heat. The problem with old inkjets is that they used to dry up. Update: Just had a email from the ICT teacher "It is so much better now it's slower. Thanks."

Yep - Definatly boring names are going to help. When i got here they were all name after greek gods. I just remembered the IP's instead. When i wiped the old domain and started a new one i was always being asked what the new names were going to be as they were hoping for something cool. I replied, not sure yet but youl never get to see them as im setting things up properly. Or call it SchoolName1 if you have just the one server

I always wait for the power to go when i use wake on lan. About 70 machines all turn on at the same time (Rest are laptops or dont have it enabled). Could do it in bits but wheres the fun in that. Apparently our main board is near its maximum and died a few year ago. They didn't think to put a higher rated one in. If it does go then ive got about an hour to get to the server room, enough time for a cuppa. Only downside is it would be me that would have to sort as ive seem to taken the role of caretaker since hes off. Meeting with the electrician tonight about lights in the school.

Cheers, Just dragging out some old laptops to give it a go. Was going to build three virtual box 2012 machines but you cant have hyper v inside a virtual box machine. Surrounded by so many machines right now. Our LEA might pay for our internet upgrade so now have 2.5k to use elsewhere. Thinking of a new server to put this into action. Second option sounds more simple and not so reliant on a single file server. Does get rid of replication though.

Ok so that make sense. Forgot about SANs as it not something we could afford for a while. If we did then you would store the VM on the SAN and if server 1 went down, server 2 would start up using the same virtual driver on the SAN as server 1. Im thinking about something like two server with dual cpu and lots of ram and HDD space replicating the VM files to the HDD on both servers. So this would be manual startup. Does Hyper V do the replication or would you setup DFS-R? Im asking like im about to do it but im just interested and wanted a techy chat as I miss that since moving to this place on my own . May do it in the future though.

Interested in Hyper-V and things it can do. Havnt got a second server to play with it so thought I would ask. If you had two server 2012 R2 Hyper-V servers and they were replicating for failover and the backup server looses connection to the main server, could you stop it auto firing up the second server. Thinking, in a school having the network go down for 10mins whilst you log in and start up the second servers is better than having both on and then having to spend hours/days recovering from data being written to both. Is there a way to stop the second server automatically starting if it looses connection to the first server. Another thing ive just thought of is what do you then do if the second server has started and taken over running things and you then turn the first back on. Is the second server now the main server that you carry on using for everything until it fails and the original main server takes back over or will the original main server take back over at some point? Just interested but don't have the hardware to test it. Cheers.

Read that sonofsanta thanks. One of the things that started me looking at them. If we can lease them when they are that price then I can get the whole lot replaced and it should cost much more then when they arnt on offer. Have so many printers on the way out.

Bit of a cheeky question. Always hearing of people replacing servers at the end of the warranty and wondering if anyone is allowed to donate to another school? Im currently running on a mega tight budget (As always it seems in some schools) which means one machine for the DC and another for 8 virtuals at the moment. Joined the school last year and trying to get rid of the single core desktops that were donated to the school just before I arrived as they were better than what they had. Not good for a secondary school and it worries me no end about the servers (stress control workshop FTW). Was hoping to get a new one with the VLE that could backup a virtual machine or two from our hyper v server but not sure if this is going ahead now. Thought i would push my luck as no one else has asked, but even if we get a server with no hard drives I can sort. Cheers, Dan

Im looking to get them in the school in a couple of years. I have seen recently a bit of kit that could create a 3d hologram using a pyramid of glass reflecting a led screen above. The idea is that you can view the product in 3d before actually printing which seemed nice to me. Cant give you the name though sorry as I didn't note it down.

Servers can last for years, in my old schools we had a old hp rack server, our LEA had it for years and replaced, I then nicked in and used it for our second domain controller and impero server. Was actually more reliable than the first domain controller and never went down. Still going strong now I believe so must be at least 7 years old. Obviosuly old stuff is more likely to go wrong but if its not important then carry on using it.

Just spotted the HP x451 at misco for £127.95 ex VAT HP Officejet Pro X451dw Colour Inkjet Printer (CN463A#A81) - www.misco.co.uk Cant see any reason why its at this price, no cashback or anything. We are just looking at 25 of these but don't have the funds yet but may be able to lease at this price. Wonder how the print heads compare to the old inkjets where they would dry up in the summer.
