Server 2008 r2 seems to be showing its age I think. Can't use large backup drives and finding more things it can't do. I'm just trying to decide what to do with our servers. Hoping I can get a new one for our VLE, I can the use it for a few more virtuals

Interesting. Ive seen you can select multiple backup disks. Wondering if it can use both a usb and the nas as dedicated backup disks and backup to both.

Have a Seagate. Tried lowered the allocation size but it looks like it aint going to work.

Is it possible to store the VSS files on a USB drive? Have a 4tb drive that would be ideal but it doesn't show up in the VSS location options. Thanks

Is this included in EES or is it a paid extra? Just upgraded to a 4tb backup drive to find windows server backup cant handle it.

You've gone past Radio 4. Radio stations didn't know you could get that old. Better get your old 8 tracks out again on the way to get your pension.

Ive got to the stage where I think radio 1 is now utter rubbish. Anyone know of any good chat stations, not old fashioned rubbish talk or politics but something with good topics? Listen to Sam FM in the morning (Used to be jack radio) as they have some good funny chat.

Have used BB before for our wireless points. Over a grands worth of unifi. Had no issues but had to pay by card. The sales guy I got even did a price match for us.

I've been asked to get a VLE up and running but I don't think its ever going to get to a point where it will have to cope with big data and with only 150 students I cant see anything ever struggling. This has given me the opportunity to buy a new server however so im thinking of over specing it and using hyper-v to make it our VLE server but also replicate our other hyper-v server and also to use to backup our schools data in another virtual file server. At the minute we have two servers. One acting as a domain controller and file server and the other hosting several virtual machines with printer server, backup DC etc and also for data backups. What im worried about is if I have the schools files and a open to the public virtual web server on the same server that I could be vulnerable to a hacker escaping the web virtual machine and accessing other virtual machines or the hyper v host HDD. Obviously the public IP will be blocked to just the apaches port but not sure if this is good practise. Any thoughts?

Thanks Steve, Told all three places that it's my first test and didn't get asked if one eye is better. Think the one that worries me the most is the sphere difference. Test 1 at Tesco was brilliant, they did all the tests and I thought the bit where you try the lenses was best. 2 was boots and they skipped the air test and the lens test had loads of dots which I didn't really like but did a very good eye exam where they look at your eye. 3 was specsavers and they skipped the photo machine and air test and seemed to rush the final lens test and I thought that the the letter wall that you look at didn't go small enough to really test. They had some very nice glasses though.

Sph. Cyl. Axis. R -1.00 -0.75 -87.5 L -0.75 -0.25 50 3. Eye. Sph. Cyl. Axis. R -1.00 -0.50 90 L -1.00 -0.25 67 Don't know where to start. These are my first ever tests and confused as to why each are so different and which to go for. They all say my right eye is worse but can't understand why the first sphere value increases so much and the axis is all over. Can anyone shed some light? It was interesting how each place did their tests. Some places completely skipped tests, some did tests to different detailed levels. Cheers

I found Uni taught me the theory of things but its completely useless when you actually get a job and get given a switch or server. What you need to do is get a old machine or virtualbox and install Windows Server 2008 R2 (I believe it would be easier to learn on) and anothe machine/virtual with windows 7. Run dcpromo on the server box and then join the win 7 box to it. Now play, create users and organisational units, OU's (Folders), once youve done that get into the group policy editor and see that your OU's are in there. Now create some policy's and see what happens. Honestly, its the best way to learn. The best way to test the network is to try and break it. If you can then everyone else can. When i built our new domain, before installing it to everyone i got the apprentice to sit for a day trying every way he could to break it. I then did the same. Youtube things like "server 2008 r2 setup". Tons of good stuff. The first thing to do now though if your on your own is check your backups. Learn how they work and where they go. Even try to restore a document. One of the most important things as you probably know. Dont want to make it into the new as the school that lost all of its data.

Thanks pete. Have now disabled STP, shame but we've only got a couple of 24's. I wonder if STP is the reason why the uplink on one of the 48 goes down every so often.

Yeah looking at Cisco switches with WCCP, cost a few £££ Will have to continue with trying out smoothwall/pfsense, possibly putting BYOD traffic through the LEAs non HTTPS proxy. Wont block HTTPS but better than nothing. We have brought up with the LEA that when their contract with Sophos ends next year could they look look one that could have a server on our site with transparent access.

Wouldnt touch Netgear again, especially the GS range. Every single one of our has issues, all on the latest firmware and were brought not too long ago. Go Cisco, more expensive but damn they go on for years.

Have sever Netgear GS series witches and each has stability issues. Issues from ports with unstable up and down speeds, switches that randomly drop the uplink connection, firmware updates always crash the switch when complete, even got support to go through it. Utter pants. Now Novatech who supplied them to us is saying that they would have to send back to Netgear. Yeah, our network will run great without our switches. Brilliant. Anyone else have issues with these? Wont be going for Netgear again, TP-Link would do better.

Just read somewhere that EES supports Macs. These obviously don't have a windows licence. Does this mean that to use a EES key on them I would need to buy xp/7/8 for each one and then I can use my EES key. What about servers. Is there a cheap way of doing this? Looking at a new Dell server and the OS adds on £500. Cheers

Cant seem to find the edge selection tool now. Sure it used to be the wand but that does colour stuff now. Did there used to be one or am I dreaming?

Novatechs own brand. Just wondered if any other manufacturers did it. Has to be the case that they use. Couldnt remember my dell doing it in my last job but remember using a machine before that did.

We have a load of machines that are all the same brand and they all get static through the front audio jack. Nothing from the rear. They have changed the motherboard after 3 weeks for us but still get it. Anyone else get it on any other machines?

Have a proxy that all internet traffic must go though. Looking for a solution that doesnt require a extra certificate as the LEA's proxy already needs one. They have tried using WCCP on their Cisco switches which worked without a extra certificate for HTTPS but overloaded the switch with data from several schools. Is there a Netgear equivalent to WCCP?
