Wow, hope you have a good deployment solution Had a chat with very pc and stone. Very PC does look good, will have to compare prices nearer to the purchase time with the Lenovos and do a bit of negotiating. Just waiting to get a rough quote from stone. Still not keen on hp's but the HP 400PD SFF seem tempting, look decent and cheaper than most quotes ive been getting in. Thanks Stuart, Will make contact with you.

Just called our current/previous local supplier after three weeks of them having my computer. (just found out,National Oilwell Varco supply oil using A cool bit of Tech) I found a fault on all of their machines. Been trying to contact them about the issues and either cannot get through or get told that the engineers either havnt looked a it yet or not communicating with each other as theres no trace. Have now lost all confidence in them as they still havnt found the issue or offered a temporary replacement.

laptopsdirect? trying to find a new supplier.
DCUK6 replied to DCUK6's topic in Recommended Suppliers
Thanks all. If you can beat their prices Luke then the business could be yours. Not spoken to my account manager at Millgate for ages. Do you do leasing options on desktops? Seriously considering it at the minute Nows the time to do it, have only replaced 20 machines so far. Another 100 to go plus laptops. Can afford to purchase 28 desktop and some laptops this year if purchased. -
That would be so good but must require a huge budget. When that model goes out then you are either going to have start mixing them or replace the whole lot again in one go when they are old. Though asking might help but it seems there isnt really one brand that comes up all the time. Lenovo,Stone, Hp, Viglen come up a fair amount. No one has mentioned fujitsu, i5 price sounds tempting but would need reviews first and there arnt any. Have emailed stone and very-pc based on the number of mentions. Viglen cost to much from what ive seen, wouldnt go HP. Just wondering, does anyone still buy the full size towers? Dont understand why they still do cheap ones, can only see the point if your gaming or something.
-
Can anyone comment on Fujitsu stuff? Can either get i3 Lenovo desktops with 2 year warranty for cheap or pay for i5 Fujitsu's with 1 year for just under what i said we could get desktops for in the bid. Looking at the [h=1]ESPRIMO E420[/h]Thinking, il get these, swap out the SSDs the previous tech put in the old machines as the i5 would benefit even more than i3's and then move the i3 machines out of ICT and into classrooms. Just opened Dells website and fairly quickly closed it again. How much! I know they are good but £80+ more almost per desktop. Wouldnt go anywhere else for servers but cant justify that on desktops.
-
Few people on Lenovo's. Found a very good price on these at the minute Which model did you go for scotyboy56? If Dell price were a bit more competitive i would love to go back. Always keep a eye open for offers. Shame the vostro's are gone though. Solid as you like in my old school. Not seen stone, will take a loo.

Just put the bid in for some new desktops and laptops. I've used prices that weve paid before using one company but cant see il be using them again. I've had good experiences with Dell. Bad experiences with HP (A fair few of them to). Just tried two Lenovos which were OK. What so you use and why?

Anyone used Laptops Direct | Cheap Laptops & Deals | UKs Largest Laptop Specialist. Our current supplier is going downhill recently and no longer competitive and currently having issues with returns. Anyone used these guys, have seen some nice prices but a few mixed reviews. Cheers

Hi, Just setting up our remoteapp server to log out people who have been disconnected for more than a hour. No one has desktop access to the server, just remote apps. Have set in the servers computer GPO Set time limit for active but idle Remote Desktop Services sessions Disabled Set time limit for disconnected sessions Enabled End a disconnected session 1 hour Set time limit for logoff of RemoteApp sessions Enabled RemoteApp session logoff delay: 1 hour Terminate session when time limits are reached Enabled Theres people of "sick" that im waiting to be logged out but they still have a active session. Ive been into the host connection configuration and went to the RDP-tcp properties and when checking the override user settings, the logoff box is greyed out and set at 1 hour. Any ideas? Cheers Update: Doesnt seem to log out any session logged in before applying this change. Logged off all users manually as they disconnected and then when they login and disconnect next time it seems to work.

"All my other schools gave us the administrator passwords"
DCUK6 replied to eyetea's topic in General Chat
Only the one administrator account here and im the only one with the password. That account only gets used when needed. Not even my account has domain/local admin rights. Only been asked twice for the admin password and that is when i first joined. They wernt used to having tech support so were used to doing things themselves. If i died or something the password is locked in a safe at my place and there is a data backup in the fire proof finance safe incase both me and my place were destroyed. Would require a network rebuild though. As soon as you give it out, you loose control of your network. In my old school the network manager kept giving it out to people because he couldnt be bothered to goto the machine. He also kept writing the password down and loosing it. In the end i told him to change the password and il create my own admin account. That way if anything happened it would be harder for him to blame me. -
Same here. My last place was a right giggle but they are all to serious here.

Anyone else need a separate internet line in school just for techs? LEA proxy
DCUK6 replied to DCUK6's topic in General Chat
Glad its not just me. Have tried to report issues but you never get anywhere. One staff member has been waiting for a login to their network since December. Think if you managed the line and filtering but as ever it seems these days, if there is someone else involved then its just a nightmare. Try not to purchase any system these days that i cant manage myself. -
So far today. Arrive, Speak to finance, Moan about my budget Get grabbed because her computer isnt working Press power button on computer check emails shout at Linux Give up on linux Moan about my budget some more Start linux again Get so far and then linux breaks shout at linux with out of the windows threats get asked for a new computer check computer tree, dam they arnt ripe yet, moan about budget get called because a computer is taking ages to start find out they pulled the power cord out last night because they were in a rush and didnt want to shut down. moan about how doing things properly actually saves time. check out edugeek check more stuff in edugeek find someone has stollen the power adapter for the staff room laptop. ask finance to purchase a new one. get moaned at about budgets being over. moan about budget find the backup drive for my mac because im getting fed up with it warning me. get a call saying they identified a problem with the audio on all of our machines and looking for a way to sort (30 machines) Update Impero Cant moan about this one. Just wondering if its normal to have a separate line coming into the school for technicians because the LEA/ISP filter and proxy are unbearable and causes issues with programs? We've just purchased a new phone system and altered our lines about and i was asked if we can get rid of the adsl broadband coming in. I said that we couldn't as we needed it to work, when asked why we couldn't use the LEA's connection the only answer i could give is that its not good enough and causes to many issues as its managed by someone else. Was waiting for the question as to why we all arnt all on it. Not allowed to. Is this normal? Gives me a nice line to stream music on. Am the only who can as the LEAs line can't take it and we've gotta wait for at least another 8 months for it to be upgraded.
-
o right, never found definitive answer on if it worked or not and somewhere in the microsoft documentation says it would only work for machines joined to the domain. The other thing stopping me was of the security issue that they blocked it for originally. I try and keep things secure as possible so if squid fails again i might have to go ahead. Only problem with the squid box is that as far as i know, you need to set it as the gateway.

Looking to setup something that will capture all web traffic from devices that arnt setup to use the proxy and diverts it through a proxy. Ive tried setting one up before in my training days and found you could kill a entire network with one when its plugged in. Our LEA tried doing something recently but it almost killed their network so now they are just letting schools get on with it themselves. After something really easy to setup as i know its probably going to be in linux, doesn't have to have any more features other than redirecting internet traffic. Any suggestions? Cheers

[Video] Poking A Phone Battery With A Knife [Yikes!]
DCUK6 replied to 6Foot2's topic in General Chat
Lithium batteries are actually really dangerous. Used to do the RC Car and heli thing and when chargin you have to ensure all the cells are charged equally using the balancer built into every battery. Some chargers had a temperature probe as well and auto shutoff if anything went wrong. We even had (as is recomended) charging bags. If anything went wrong then the bag is supposed to stop them burning your place down. -
Thanks all, Going to go for the Avaya i think. The pricing we got offered is now pretty good. Just waiting to hear back about extra phone licence costs and what software is available for android so we can connect mobiles to the system
