To let you all know, I have stumbled on this website http://www.koding.com It offers online VMs running Ubuntu with root access all in a collaborative environment. I emailed them about the private workspace the have on their website and the emailed back within 3 hours asking for the amount of students who will be using and will have a test environment available for our school for the 1st Feb. They are really good at responding on twitter too. Just thought it may be useful for is all, but will not stop me looking at other scenarios we have already discussed here. No mention of costs yet, but I doubt it will be as much as a VDI infrastructure if the offer the public open one freely for people.

ARGH!!!!!! my brain hurts, I am more confident with running it through an X Client and just installing and setting users up on the server for it, than I am trying to get it working in a web interface. That is just where I am not that confident in making it work and then fixing when it breaks.

Did a little bit of Googling and I think a *nix box with a GUI to a windows client is perfect, I am looking at xming for the windows client, but I am not sure how I would go about the server side, which flavour of *nix to use, and how to get the "apps" published so that I can push out a client config to open up the right ones.

I think thats that problem, when it comes to A Level the need to make use of graphics libraries. so with an X Client I could possible use some kind of GUI? Sorry for all the questions, I need to figure out exactly how to achieve this one, This may involve a lot of test work with VMs at home I think.

oh now @pcstru the X-Server approach with GUI access may work, are you basically describing a *nix version of terminal services, but with less interference with one and other? Trying to get my head around that one, it would just be the saving of current projects the issue there. I am not the worlds worse when it comes to *nix but only if there is a nice GUI and good web instructions on how to do it, not the best at troubleshooting it.

@TheScarfedOne Which software version are you using to run the VMs, at present we are using Microsoft Virtual PC, but I am interested to which on you used to map the MyDocs, and where you found the instructions to make the liveCD back to an ISO *Edit* forgot the word version for Virtual Box enquiry

Only is you have a spare 10K for the hardware enough to run the 30 machines and the 2k in yearly licensing, as you will need the fall over and with a windows 7 image easily taking 50gb once you allow for Virtual Memory and the over heads for the server, the space would only hold about 20 PCs Also, in theory you need an individual machines per student, which then means you need more than just 1 classes worth of machines, the capital investment is just too much.

The problem is the laptops are not the best on the resources. That's why I was thinking a hypervisor.

Hello all, The situation at present it, we have a site where students from year 09 get assigned their own laptop, there are only desktop PCs for Admin users and some in DT. At present students run microsoft virtual PC with a local external SSD with a win xp install for them to do their programming on it. Getting complaints is too slow, it does work, blah blah blah. I have a spare server with quite a bit of storage (about 1tb) and it has 2 quad core processors with 128gb of RAM, which is not doing much (was brought for VDI in a box, but never took off) can any of your great minds think of a way we could utilise this server with some kind of hypervisor with machines our students can programme on with no restrictions, save their work to their own home drives, but the machines reset after every use? Any suggesting on where to start would be great with this one. All the best

To All, I am currently looking (for next financial year) for general costings of our next lot of student laptops, we got HPs this year, and while the 4340s series are nice, The return to base warrantee for accidental damage and the having to register all the devices for their warrantees/care packs have just been a bit of a nightmare. I am looking at getting machines of the following spec Has to look aesthetically pleasing (we find if they look nice our students appreciate them more than if the look like a T series Thinkbook) 13" Screens (as I find 15" can be a bit cumbersome carrying them around) i5 Processor desirable but i3 will do 4gb of RAM (not gone 64bit yet) maybe SSDs around the 200gb mark but if not 500gb HDDs need to have 3 years onsite accidental damage coverage battery coverage for 3 years is desirable A/G/N wireless for our N based Meru Wireless LAN Good customer support (this is a must) must run Windows 7 over windows 8 Does anyone have any suggestions who to go with, just putting the feelers out there, official quote will not be until after April for a July delivery, ready for the summer holiday. I use Lightspeed's MDM, just because we get a great deal through our LEA, the other option could be to run your own MDM server through Profile Manager on OSX server but you will need an OSX device with the server utils :-)

Interesting, I am currently setting up Moodle, but we still have fronter (have had it for 5 years now) looking at running both in tandem, but it does seem that the least amount of stuff made to work with it, and to top it off, has anyone brought an ActiveTeach disc recently, no more scorm content and 1 user to access it online in their portal that times out for 30 mins if you have typed in the password wrong 3 times and it has the audacity to still have the VLE Compatible tick, this is the same company (well parent company) and they will not make anything that works with one ad other. /rant

your sims installation files should be in s:(or whoever your SIMS drive is mapped)\sims\setups\ there will be SIMSinst for full installation, but most of the time simsapplicationsetup will refresh the files and get it working.

I have recently got a new rescue cat (has to have my other one put down in November as she has severe renal failure, blood everywhere not pretty) but this new cat is, how shall i out this, a bit on the large side, at 7kg (sure I have her down to 6 now) but she is 5 and sits next to me (not on me) and keeps me nice and warm :-) Picture attached
