  1. Not off hand, but if you look at it in WE and set it so's you can see all file extensions, that should tell you.
  2. It might be easier if you list the folder permissions you have in place.
  3. You don't need the second drive or path, just the name. And I reckon you need the full filename, including file type.
  4. For some of our staff, classroom management consists of mailing us to ask us to check what the kids in their class are doing on their machines!!! Sometimes this is in a room where the teacher has access to the Impero console. More and more we are being asked to find technical solutions to management (or lack of) issues.
  5. Whilst part of what we do is to help schools achieve their goals, and if their goal is to flood the site with i-Pads then we should do so to the best of our ability, another part is to offer advice and opinions as to whether the same outcomes might be achieved in a better way. If what's required is simply a fast and effective browser then a pad or tablet might be the way to go. But if what's required is a fast and effective browser together with a range of creative tools, including faculty-specific software, then a laptop might just be a better overall product for the user, the teacher and the school as a whole. Where the resource is wanted might also be a factor in some cases. For me, it should begin with the desired outcome and then choosing the right tool to achieve that outcome, rather than purchasing the tool and then either restricting yourself or having to bolt things on at the cost of time and money. There's far more choice today, and we should not restrict ourselves unnecessarily, but equally we should not dismiss the tried and trusted in favour of the shiny and new just because it is shiny and new.
  6. BM and I put together a plan for more centralised printing - SLT dumped all over it having asked staff for their views...such a huge waste, mainly because staff don't want to wait for photocopying.
  7. Ditto this.
  8. In the end we created a package with Prism and that did the trick thanks.
  9. Quite. We just left a couple of servers on the internal range, used a bit of firewalling, and deployed a huge internal range that allowed us to section off areas as much as we liked - not sure our LEA would have liked that, but we did it when we went Academy...our ISP were not overly pleased, but once we set up the change requests for the NAT it all worked as we'd imagined.

    SANs

I think HP SANs were pretty much re-badged DotHill a few years back. We never had a problem with ours, but I understand from our supplier that their support can be less than helpful at times.
  11. So, we have a shared drive, with the root and its folders allowing standard domain users only Read & Execute, List Folder Content, and Read. Tried and tested to ensure users can't create a folder or move one of them into another one...except that, on at least 2 occasions, it's happened. One user saw herself accidentally drag a root folder and she let go in a panic, dropping it into another root folder...she then tried to move it back and the permissions warning kicked in...we moved it back and then tried to replicate as a standard user with no joy, and when we asked the same user to try to replicate, the permissions did their job. Any thoughts?
  12. Out of interest, can people who are having this problem post to say if they have ?:\users shared or each users' homedir shared (e.g. ?:\users\students\2012intake\username Many thanks.
  13. Anyone with a KCOM/Capita/emPSN package...are you happy with what you have or will you be looking to go elsewhere come renewal time? If you want to move on, what's the main reason? Are you considering moving it in-house? If not, any providers in mind? Just wondering what the feeling is, and perhaps whether just one of those 3 companies spoils it for the others ( I think you may know which one I refer to). Thanks in anticipation of any feedback.
  14. I think he can, but the ban goes with him.
  15. Trying to get Pygame to work with Python as a deployment. It seems as if Pygame requires the 'install to Registry' option selected when using the MSI, so does anyone know if there is a switch to use in order to have that done silently when executing the msi? Thanks.
  16. VLANs can be useful, but can also be overcooked. They can also be a bugger to remember during that brief moment of panic when something goes wrong. Planning and recording are the key.
  17. It was actually very much a tongue-in-cheek post, but then along you come with your self-righteous indignation...have yourself a very nice day.
  18. Oh dear...some people take themselves so seriously...
  19. New technology itself may not be the issue - but frankly I have a hard enough job not laughing at people who use blue tooth phones, so my ability not to openly mock people wearing this is questionable. You may say the problem lies with me - to which I'd offer a shrug.
  20. I would want them to pay me that per day to wear them.
  21. I'm with Stephen Colbert on this one - rename to the Google Douchebag.
  22. Scarily funny...
  23. Agreed - believe me, I may tire of doing so but I won't stop trying to chip away. It's not actually my remit, but I insist that due to the overlap into my role I must point things out and must also advise against developments that put these things at risk if they can't be done correctly. Mostly falls on deaf ears, but every minor victory is welcome.
  24. Yes, I'm fully aware of the safeguarding issue. With ZenMate for Chrome and a whole host of proxy bypass sites - which we currently block either with GPs or Impero - it's almost impossible not to have one slip through the net as they are springing up all the time. So when you're unable to apply GPs or have Impero on student devices, those backdoors only increase. But then, when you work at a place where some staff allow students to use their own phone wi-fi where our wi-fi is not available, thereby avoiding both filtering and monitoring, it's no wonder these headaches exist. Knowing what you need to do and having your SLT agree are two very different matters, sadly.
  25. We force authentication to at least get a filtered connection, but then cannot prevent users bypassing the proxy with software or add-ons. Bad enough not having monitoring on them (as with Impero) but if you can't even guarantee filtering, should it even be allowed if eSafety was adhered to fully?
