  1. Interesting - back to the old standby, eh?
  2. We have a few LearnPads purchased last summer. I'm told by users that they are very slow in comparison to I-Pads, but of course there's a significant difference in costs. If you just want a mobile tool to browse with and are also easy to manage, the LearnPads seem ideal to me, but I am concerned about performance. Any thoughts?
  3. I see it this way: it's my job to advise, point out the pros and cons, explain, recommend. Ultimate decisions are made by SLT and Governors. The bit I don't like is that even if they choose to ignore all the cons, the buck still stops with me.
  4. Hasn't the Impero/Chome issue been fixed? I thought that was either done or due?
  5. Already hit it last night - episode 2 tonight. Great opener.
  6. +1 for this. I pointed out to SLT that teachers allowing students to use their own Internet-enabled phones in the classroom meant that absolutly no filtering was being applied, and that by allowing it they were condoning it. I pretty much got told 'thanks, but we want to, so we're going to carry on'.
  7. Yes, whilst it squeezed in too much for a single session, perhaps, it did provide food for thought as to how trolling potentially impacts on people's lives, and how selfies and the like have to be approached with caution. The neat trick was in showing that the girl, who considered herself purely a victim, was actually guilty of being an on-line bully herself...something I imagine happens quite a lot.
  8. Not sure if you meant replacing RM CC? or just their class tool. + 1 for Burconix if you meant moving away from CC, and a +1 for Impero either way.
  9. We had one user inform us his laptop screen was cracked. Went to it later that day only to find it buried beneath a stack of files and a heavy document case. Apparently the member of staff 'always dumps them' on his laptop to hide it?!?!?! Another complained his laptop wasn't working properly and always overheating, only for us to find that he used it next to a wood milling machine and it was so covered in sawdust the poor thing was coughing up its last breath.
  10. Agree with plexer - we have environmental cards for UPS devices and they work really well, as it'll just activate when temperatures hit a prescribed peak.
  11. I'm a NM and everything I need goes with my on an Ironkey encrypted USB drive. It wipes the drive after 6 unsuccessful login attempts. I back this up to an encrypted external HDD, which never leaves the home safe unless I'm using it. Works for me.
  12. I suspect I know which one - should be a capital offence.
  13. If it's just files how about Dropbox or something similar?
  14. As far as I know it's due for release early next year.
  15. Staff are catching up with this gradually, but we get mails from the same teachers who start by saying "Student X's files have been lost from the system..." And even though we routinely say in our response that we'll restore if possible but that the system doesn't delete these files, that either the student did or someone else gained access to their area, the same teachers say exactly the same thing again, time after time. It's as if they simply refuse to believe that a student would lie to them, or that it's just easier to blame the 'system' than it is to debate the matter with a student. It's tiresome, but they are in the minority here these days. Our students believe we have a 3 week rotation, whereas actually it's double that and we use VSC, so it's rare that we can't restore their files.

    Ergo or Stone

Checked Ergo out and went to their HQ. It's quite a system, but in the end I just wasn't convinced about the build quality, although we were considering taking a risk...but I managed to get Stone to drop their prices and we stuck with them. Their pre-sales, post-sales, support, warranty and quality of build is superb IMHO.
  17. Hey, why not cough up for a really expensive digital signage rig and then just use it to play Radio One at lunchtime - oh, sorry, was thinking of our school dining room not your own! ;-)
  18. We rolled back to 2008SP2, but it's astonishing that they can get away with this - it's a fundamental flaw.
  19. Does anyone know if MS have managed to find an actual fix for this, or have they simply given up? Cheers.
  20. Yeah, I think over 255 characters? Something like that.
  21. One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest Chinatown Both Python Films Dirty Harry The Deer Hunter
  22. No problem.
  23. Don't forget the bit that says: Please feel free to ignore all this if SLT are a bunch of pussies.
  24. For Primary use, you can probably just connect them up and wipe them once a week...it all rather depends on what they need them for. That's if you're talking 25 of course and the school owns them. I love the fact that LearnPads can be remote wiped from the portal.
