Does anyone use something like .local or .internal for their LAN domain name? The more I read about this the more confusing it gets. I've read two TechNet reports where one says yes and the other says no, I've read widely differing opinions on it on blogs and sites everywhere...so, once again, I thought I'd ask you, the users...if you do use these, has it ever caused you any problems, or do you now foresee potential problems and wish you hadn't used it. Thanks.

For everything it does, I don't think Impero is overpriced. But in our experience it does more than our staff need it to do, and so some of the features get wasted to a certain extent. A standard version with a choice of bolt-ons would be great, but I suspect not easy to now provide.

Immediacy can be an issue. If people are used to being able to get simple things done quickly, this can often be a problem with managed services - in a classroom situation the need for 'here and now' support can be crucial at times.

Have you tried Stone? Should have no problem bringing the machines you want for that price with them.

No - wouldn't have it done at all.

I am describing a school situation. Class management and backups to external devices are the prescribed way to go if the teachers want best-case scanario. It's not as easy as simple network use, no, but it's the trade-off for a better end product. Cubase is simply not designed for network use in the way most of us would think of it.

I'm just grateful I don't have a favourite if I'm being honest.

Cubase recommendations from users are local install, separate HDD for audio files - anything else is asking for trouble apparently.

When my nipper was born I was a business manager and away for long periods of time...after 9 months I decided that I had a 9-month-old daughter I barely knew, and decided to quit. I got other, regular hour jobs before coming into IT. I'm so glad I did, because whilst we had less material things, I was able to be there as she developed and I got to know her and don't have to look back and say 'if only' - surely two of the most miserable words when put together like that.

Hell's teeth!! My sprog is 26, still lives at home, and from what I've read on here is getting off very lightly indeed...but seriously, we don't want to make a profit out of her, so what we charge for rent is all inclusive and covers the extras we pay out for because she's at home. I confronted 50 badly, but came out the other side...but now I realise that I wasn't disturbed about my own age, it was the age of my family and the knowledge that I'd be losing them from my life too soon...

We have them for all teaching/classroom staff. We have a stock of spares for casual/temp users and repair cover, all set up and ready to go. We are currently considering whether this model is sustainable (have done so many times and each time have continued) or to go to having a machine in every class and a few in faculty offices.

Agreed - at the very least.

Surely the approach is 'First do no harm'. Do the benfits of W8 outweigh any negatives (from the perspective of your users) and can a deployment be justified? Many of our admin users and teachers would be/are mortified by W8, and whilst of course they could be taught how to use the new OS, why would we foist this on them unless there were overwhelming practical and/or technical reasons for doing so? We should never assume that just because we can cope that our users can as well - in fact, we should err on the side of caution unless there are valid reasons for change IMHO.

We do disk-to-disk overnight and then disk-to-tape during the day, with EOW media stored in a safe in a different building. One thing I seldom read about during such discussions is this: if your server room burns down then you've probably got bigger problems than your hardware, such as all your cabling coming into your comms cab. I suspect that would be the longest part of any recovery job.

TCO would probably favour laptops over pads - ours go on to have a decent old age as stand-alones.

I can't see either replacing network user data storage and shared data storage entirely, not in the near- or medium-future, but instead treated as an enhancement to the on-site facilities and resources. I wonder if I'm alone in carrying my network with me on a memory stick, with 2 external HDDs as my daily and weekly backups?
