The best team won. We were completely outplayed in every meaningful aspect of the game. There were some odd decisions given in favour of the home side, but that should not detract from the point that we were out-gunned for the majority of the game. Wales were patient and the additional experience was a telling factor. We should not overlook the fact that almost all the England subs were actually first choice last season, and this new young side will only improve. We have a few weaknesses which need to be addressed, and I don't believe Lancaster should continue to play two 'crash' centres. Overall, England did take a step forward this tournament, but Saturday was a reminder as to how much further we need to go.

No, doesn't happen to me, and by the time we find out it has happened to others the moment is long gone...I saw the AV lock mentioned on a forum, but don't believe our Sophos setup would cause this. It's hard to tell how long the lock (if it exists) lasts as the user can usually make it work next click, so it's purely a temporary issue, perhaps over and done in a flash. An irritiant more than a problem.

This problem can crop up if you have a Server 2008R2/Win7/Office 2010 combination. It doesn't happen for all users, doesn't happen all the time for users who have been affected, less than once a day on average, but when working on an Office file and they click the Save button they get told it is in use and cannot be saved and to try again...if they try again shortly afterwards it seems to work fine. I have researched this on the net and found a number of possibilities, but what I'm asking here is: Has anyone on here had this problem and found a fix for it, and if so what was that fix please? Thanks.

Indeed, £50,000 is not peanuts, especially when you're spending more than that every summer just to update, upgrade, maintain existing systems and clients. We have a little shy of 80 classrooms, spread across a dozen or so separate areas, not to mention offices. We have wi-fi in our 6 form, using limited BYOD, plus we have it in another couple of areas. Our controller is expandable, but my main concern would be the infrastructure...which is the very last thing wi-fi people talk about.

Agreed. A lot of people don't realise that a wi-fi network relies on a cabled network at its core, that you have to consider issues such as power to the APs (so direct power, POE injectors, even POE switches), capacity on existing infrastructure, improving infrastructure, before you even get started on the devices...it's not that most of us wouldn't like it, we just have to make sure the decision makers are aware of the implications.

It's as if wi-fi in and of itself is enough to provide this utopia...ideally this would have explored in equal measure the cost and other implications of the devices used as well. It's more of a prolonged soundbite than an article.

I can't see 6th Form being the place you'd put Macs. Design, Media or Music, maybe, but it's still worth considering how and why they would be better than standard PCs or laptops, because if they're going to cause more problems - training, networking - then their purchase needs to make sense. I would seek better justification than 'it's industry standard'.

The issue here is, if you have 1000 student users, a number of them are likely to already have the latest version of Office. An audit of the student user base is, perhaps, a good place to start. Why licence their use if they already are? Alternatively, save your money and use GoogleApps instead ;-)

I would like to interject this: whilst I cannot and will not name names, I was put in touch with a senior educational business manager for education who told me that provided you informed users they had to have the same version of Office on the station that was remoting into the TS, and provided you did everything you could to police that, Microsoft would take the stance that you were doing your best to remain within the legal parameters, and that if an audit did kick off about it, you'd be given time to remedy the situation and they would work with you over a period of time. I would add that this was the third person I spoke to there, and was the third different response I received.

SIMS has improved considerably in recent years, but Capita still have this habit of having to release fixes shortly after upgrades, and even fixes to fix the fixes. So yes, on the one hand they are quick to repond, but on the other it would be nice if they didn't have to quite so much.

We are in the midst of a thorough LAN ID discovery. Using a Fluke device to discover data point to switch connectivity, we've found that a simple spreadsheet, detailing Device/Data Point/Location/Switch Port/Patch Panel Port/LAN-VLAN works a treat. We have one sheet containing the full list, and then a separate sheet for every switch.

It does what it says on the tin - you count the number of full-time staff, and that's your number. Other things can be added, but the basic package covers quite a bit. I fyou have, say, 50 staff and 200 PCs, then EES is probably for you.

Will bne fully 7 after this summer. Hung on to XP on Curric simply because there was no real need to migrate, so didn't as we didn't want to re-image everything in a really busy summer, plus doing so prior to EES would have been expensive as a one-off. Won't touch 8 until at least after its first SP, and from what I've seen can see no reason to move anyway.

We saw this on our client stations this week. Haven't restarted the servers yet, and will wait until we have some clear time in case.

Sorry if in the wrong place - didn't know where it should go. Has anyone had any dealings with The National Business Network for their phone systems? Our BM has had a mail in outlining savings if the bill is switched over from BT, but it's one of those that looks too good to be true, so I thought I'd ask on here what the real deal is. Thanks.

A couple of queries: 1) Has anyone experienced a merge with another school and NOT put in place a physical link to the other site? 2) Has anyone linked to another site using line-of-sight radio, and if so what's your experience of this? Many thanks.

Can't advise on the PCs as we use Stone. On the OS...well, my standard rule is not to deploy a new OS until at least after its first SP, but others may disagree. The OS in a school is somewhat odd - here it's used pretty much as the gateway to other things, so it's less relevant insofar as its bells and whistles. I like 7 and find it stable, so we'll be sticking with for the time being and new stations this year will be 7, too.
