Does anyone else have a problem with the Home button when using Chrome over a network? Managed to get the Home page set up working fine, so it opens up to it OK, but once in use the Home button doesn't work.

Hmm. Can't agree SANs are pointless in a school environment. Horses for courses, as they say. MAY not be required for some places, but VERY handy in others, I'd say.

How many virtual servers do you intend to run? What jobs will they be doing - i.e. SIMS, Exchange, etc? How much storage do you need on your SAN?

Give them a break - getting it installed at all whilst suspended by their legs from the ceiling is to be applauded.

We also use Avaya. It just works. I'd advise you to take advantage of their training, though - as calls related to use of software can be costly.

Bit by bit I would say - and even then not all the way. How much faculty-specific software will ever exist in the cloud? Our curric mail is in the cloud, if you still think of GoogleApps that way, but we have retained our Exchange services for staff...SIMS in the cloud may be something we'd look at...as for storage, I doubt it. It's not a one size fits all solution, and won't be for many years if ever.

I would love us to move to a station in every class and some spread around offices. Since 2002 we have provided staff with laptops and when you are a large-ish school it becomes very expensive and hard to sustain. We moved from a 3 year cycle of replacement to 4 year, with the ones that drop off the line becoming spares, laptops for temp staff, and then on to standalones used by some tutor groups. However, I have always disputed the need to provide them, and continue to do so. I think it's interesting when you see new built academies how few of them opt for this solution. Laptops for Teachers has a lot to answer for, because whilst it provided them, it never catered for their replacements. We took the plunge before LfT, but I've yet to see a genuinely convincing argument that proves the case for such an arrangement.

Was that Q for me? If so, sorry for the confusion...the wireless network is integrated with their Curric AD and so they enter their usual network passwords.

We have a similar setup, with transparent proxy, so once the user connects to the signal they enter their usual username and password to then gain access to the wireless network itself. Regards the Duty of Care issue, we took the view that, whilst we acknowledge they will use their own devices on their own connections, if we provide the facility we are obliged to provide the care.

The one we applied last Friday did the trick for us regards Course Manager.

Sorry - they came directly via Solus. We patched last Friday and also on Monday as a result of the Friday patch. These were released just last week I believe.

We're about to launch it in our 6 Form - but in a restricted form at the moment. No access to network, so Internet only. I suspect they'll bounce between ours and their own 3G or whatever simply because through ours they are filtered, so no Facebook, etc. However, it's currently seen as an addition to our facilities rather than the baseline, which is ideal. We were initially asked to provide a cluster of i-Pads, so once the infrastructure went in there was no good reason not to also try BYOD. My only concern at the moment is the impact on our broadband bandwidth, as we're already hitting our existing cap several times a day, but with us moving from 60mbps to 100 in December, we see BYOD as a bit of an experiment.

Hmm. Let's say the 'requirement' has yet to be established. Let's say SLT have had a lightbulb moment and believe providing a wi-fi facility (let's exclude BYOD at this point) is a good idea, but they just can't put their finger on why or what the expected outcome would be. I suppose I'm looking for initial gut reactions to the question... For what it's worth, my own initial reaction is to begin with a tried-and-trusted approach to devices - opt for laptops as we know the pros and cons. We know they'll do a good job - hard to think of something they won't do that our students are used to being able to do elsewhere in the school or, indeed, with the rest of the available 6th Form kit. However, I'm open to being persuaded otherwise if the argument in favour of i-Pads is a good one.

Just wondering where you good folk stand with this and where you think it's headed. For those who are willing, I have a few questions: 1) Do you currently have BYOD? 2) If not, do you plan/believe you'll have it within the next 5 years? 3) If you have it, do you limit access to authenticated Internet only? 4) If you have it, what's been the impact on your Broadband? 5) If you have it, is it regarded as a successful facility? 6) If you don't have it, but are planning towards it, what are your major pros and cons? 7) If you DO have it, what have been your major pros and cons? 8) If you don't intend to have it, why not? A big ask, I know, and I know there are other threads on the subject. However, I wanted to get an idea of how others feel about it all within one thread. Many thanks.
