If it's a standard report from Capita, it may well be worth reimporting the report definitions from the latest upgrade. We've had some weird issues before where reports run really slowly and reimporting them has fixed it (issues ranging from everybody affected, individual users affected and all buyt one user affected)

Well all school sites hosted by Cumbria County Concil have died, atleast I got my update on at 7.10am I suppose and did see the active visitors peak arround 35 on analytics before it died.... edit: and they are finally back up after posting this

Thanks for the replies, guess I'll have to go arround for a day and just work out what the differences are. Your blog post @jamesfed was actually quite interesting though, I might be using it with another push for newer machines.

I have about a dozen machines on XP out of 270, mainly because the staff have so much stuff scattered over them since they were in use before I started and trying to arrange a time to migrate the stuff and rebuild the computer is hard to do with census and other returns which are constantly popping up. We did the main migration summer just gone, not planning to upgrade to Windows 8 anytime soon though.

Hi All We're having a big push on power usage here and I've been asked to investigate our PC's and Printers and see if we can reduce it any. Probably a stupid question but I haven't got anything to work it out with at the moment, but any rough guidance on how big a power difference is between a PC which has gone to sleep and a PC which is switched off? Also, and I can't see how but I'm going to make myself look stupid and ask, is there any easy way to determine whether a PC is switched off or on standby without going round and trying to wake up each individual PC? Any help/guidance is appreciated.

You could run the msi with /a and it will build you an administrative install point to deploy it from. I used to do it this way until I realised the cab file worked (not using impero though)

We don't appear to have any listed under our Software Assurance for our EES agreement - does it need to be a specific ammount/total to qualify for it?

Patch 17755 can be requested to fix this now

Well tonight, after a bit of fiddling with various redeploy options, a helping hand from my saviour at Capita and a couple of long nervous waits, the Autumn update has been successfully deployed! A public thanks and a hell of a lot of appreciation from me for the person who helped me through it all, I hope Capita realise just how much anger you managed to avert them from! Just the few usual tidying up tasks left to do with some offline workstations now I think.

Thanks for the reply, Capita are currently investigating after some nudging so will redeploy the whole update once it's hopefully understood and resolved since restoring the database was the only option. Annoyingly, all the computers that were offline when the deployment occured updated correctly this morning so I had to go and roll them all back. At this point, I currently hate Solus3 with a passion after being quite happy for a year.

That's not our issue (unfortunately). Every agent has reported that the download size and expected size are different, then sat and wait for 30 minutes while the deployment for each machine timed out. To say I am beyond unimpressed is definitely an understatement.

After a pretty rubbish night tonight trying to do the Autumn upgrade and some unhelpful advice from Capita that someone will call me in the morning I'd like to know if someone would have any idea where my system is likely to stand. Solus 3 deployed the Autumn database updates but then failed on the SQL Server, File Server and and all workstations (taking 3 hours to do so), so in order to have a working SIMS system in the morning I've had to restore the database back to the backup from before the update took place. When Capita resolve my Solus 3 issue, am I likely to be able to just deploy the Autumn upgrade again and it will detect that the Summer database is present and install the updates again or am I going to have to faff arround with redeploying the database updates and then retrying the rest of the SIMS Autumn update? To say it's a mess and I'm knackered and not thinking properly about things at the moment is an understatement, so forgive me if I'm missing the obvious.

Hasn't Windows always (annoyingly) done that? I do the opposite of @FN-GM and just put 1 at the end of the first one.

See our's do (or did) do that for SIMS and Solus updates, but didn't for Discover updates. It's just not instant (which is a pain and causes problems). Maybe mine just does weird things which Capita fixes and then it stops mine.... Change Request 1206-1111593, while not mine, I would like to see implemented. People leaving SIMS open despite being told there's an update is my major problem normally.

No problem, we've had various issues with different parts of SIMS recently where Capita say it isn't possible or doesn't do something (I was arguing on the phone for 20 minutes over something last week which I knew it did but they insisted it didn't, still isn't fixed yet though)

Alternative to the Windows Installer Cleanup that I've been using is the Microsoft FixIt: Fix problems with programs that can't be installed or uninstalled Been using it for Java install issues where I screwed up my first package and some machines installed it before I fixed it.

Not exactly what your after but would achieve it for you. If you go into Reports within Solus 3, you can pull up a report which will tell you the SIMS Workstation version. It can get screwed up if your deployment messes up somehow as happened to us during the main summer deployment.

Well, I'm stumped. I would try enabling the file preference debug by following this on your server Enabling Group Policy Preferences Debug Logging using the RSAT - Ask the Directory Services Team - Site Home - TechNet Blogs and then checking the debug log on the client to see if it highlights anything obvious that's going wrong...... Might also be worth seeing if there's anything in the Group Policy Event log on the Win 7 client (Event Viewer -> Applications and Services -> Microsoft -> Windows -> GroupPolicy -> Operational) - I normally find nothing there, but you might be lucky (The applocker one has been a godsend for me at times)

I've just set something up exactly the same as you and it seems to work ok for me. Comparing the screenshot to what I've got though, you've shown the setting in your group policy but not the Group Policy Result when you run it against the computer from the group policy management console. Any chance you could post a screenshot of it as it can provide error information and results for individual preference items?

What result do you get is you use the Group Policy Management Console to generate a Group Policy Result for the workstation and user? It should list any Group Policy Preferences applied to either the user/computer in the relevent bit. I've tested our, if you have client side targeting enabled on the policy and it doesn't meet the criteria then it doesn't list it at all.

I wrote the script attached to this post for updating our SIMS.ini when we moved servers a couple of years ago now, not tested on Windows 7 but should work as far as I can tell. I just added it as a startup script for a while and then eventually removed it again, it just searches through the file and replaces OLDSERVER with NEWSERVER http://www.edugeek.net/forums/mis-systems/74793-spring-update-grrrrr.html#post667475 If you want a hand adjusting it for the connect.ini let me know, but other posts in that thread might help out too.

In Mon:6 (and same for the rest of the week if needed) put an N and then it will move your PM registration to the end of the day in lesson monitor and should give you the setup your after.
