Nothing but praise for Elementary- but they are based in Leeds. Not sure they go as far as Staffordshire. But they do provide a ‘health check’ and honest advise based on your needs

Replacement USB-C 45W chargers recommendations
XiJ replied to dgsmith's topic in ChromeOS & Cloud Based OS
I tend to stick to anker or UGREEN for my usb charging needs. Anker being preferred - quality but not always cheap. -
We use between 2.5 and 3.5kwh per day on average. Most is TVs and Lads PC. The oven if we’re cooking and now and again the tumble dryer In winter. Although I’m pretty sure the SkyQ box uses about the same energy whether in ‘standby’ or switches on. Certainly the old SkyHD boxes were like that. Grrr

Yeah I wouldn’t even entertain wireless desktops without a very very good reason. Especially on a suite. It seems to create a potential issue that you don’t need - assuming you have a room with enough network sockets in already. (Or the ability to easily add more)

Odd behaviour from new home SKY fibre system
XiJ replied to TwistedHelixis's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
As above I read Sky at least ‘prefer’ you to use their own DNS. I currently prefer 1.1.1.1 (1.1.1.3 for the kids) -
[tv show] Sky and Channel 4 strike deal to show 2021 Formula 1 season finale live...

Lol @ Hamilton throws a tantrum. Out of everyone. And I mean everyone he’s been the most calm and dignified. -

New president has had a nightmare here. I suspect there’ll be lots of back pedalling. -
That seems an awfully long time for 600gb. How are you presenting the backup drive? I seem to remember that shared drives / folders or non dedicated would be slower. For a synology NAS I would present the drive as iSCSI and it can appear as a local drive for WSB. I’d also consider other software such as Veeam for backup purposes.

So it seems we all agree Masi made decisions that artificially affected the race. -

Masi chose Netflix over sport. He’s brought this on Himself with whimsical and inconsistent decisions over the past 4 races at least. Instead did trying to offer deals and please everyone, just implement the rules consistently The result feels totally manufactured (I’m a self confessed Lewis fan and can’t stand red bull but I’m trying to be objective as poss). Let all cars I lap as per the rules. The. Safety car in the lap after. Why so difficult? Worst case, red flag, let both cars change tires and have 2 or 3 laps Bansai at the end (like Baku) -
I stick with Samsung / LG as I know the UI and the responsiveness of it is good due to the spec. I wouldn’t buy a non smart TV. Plex, Amazon, AppleTV and Disney+ all work flawlessly. They are my go tos. If I cast it’s usually via Airplay as we’re an iOS family. Only on the much older TV’s do we use Chromecast and/or Firestick

You will NOT find a cheaper deal at the moment. Standard variable is best you’ll get. Pray and try again next year is the only options

We moved ~40 schools over to Arbor (other MIS providers are available) during March 2020 as the pandemic hit. (LA realised they didn’t really provide an IT service and so stopped pretending). So schools saw this as an ideal time to look into options. Not one schools has said - how tricky the move was - how they hate the new product - how the wish they’d never dumped sims - how they lost data All of the schools - never want to look back - found migration was handled superbly with a back up of sims and Arbors work - wish they’d made the move years ago - have found adoption and take up by all staff to be much better due to the user friendliness. - have dumped a server These were all primary to be fair but they all love their move. Now I need to get rid of the stragglers still using FMS…

Yep too late to fix now. Bizarrely you’re better on a standard variable rate as the price is capped (not what you pay, what can be charged). The price cap is increasing in October - but you’ll still be better sticking with variable. And hope the spike reduces for April. I’ve been lucky to fix in July - more luck than judgement, my previous fix ended and a fix sounded better for the small premium over winter. If prices don’t decrease for the end of my fixed period, we’re screwed.

Got my 13 at the weekend. It’s blue and lovely. Got a clear case but would love to be caseless. Apple have done wonders with the migration from one phone to another. My 11 transferred everything flawlessly to the new 13. And the daughter gets my old 11 for her birthday. Lucky girl. Son Won’t be pleased as he’s still using my wife’s old XR [emoji3]

Season 3 ? It’s not normally something I’d watch - but I enjoyed the first two series. Even if a bit strange at times!

Unifi Guest portal or Wifi network
XiJ replied to Sonic007's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
We use the guest portal from unifi with printed passcodes. We do put it in its own vlan though. -
Really enjoy the Rookie. But we’re big Nathan Fillion fans. Everything you’ve said is spot on

I’ve watched bits of the hundred. The Northern super chargers vs Manchester can’t fields (or whatever they are called) was brilliant. But it was pretty much Yorks vs Lancs as far as the 20k crowd were concerned. Brilliant entertainment though. I don’t mind the hundred or T20 - if it encourages kids to take up the game. But there’s nothing like Test Cricket - when it’s good it’s bloody brilliant. Although there can still be long periods of nothing happening. I love it tho.

There was a firmware - 4.21 or 4.24 think that did cause/ have issues with windows dhcp servers. Long since fixed.

I’m using my Virgin in modem only mode and use a Mikrotik router. Much more control

Network Upgrade Recommendation for Primary & Secondary School
XiJ replied to Setro's topic in Wireless Networks
We’re replacing a full trust with unifi network kit and WiFi. We use it extensively in edu and business. The only thing that was an issue was the recent Windows DHCP bug firmware in a couple of schools. The hardest thing at the moment is getting hold of the kit. But it’s similar for a lot of IT kit -
20k of unifi kit - still waiting on all the 24 ports. Lucky to get the rest In. Other jobs have had to be postponed as we can’t get supply.

Are you looking forward to getting stuck in to all your Summer jobs!
XiJ replied to kennysarmy's topic in General Chat
Busiest summer I’ve ever had. Trait wide full network upgrades. WiFi, switches? Cans and re-patching. New servers trust wide. Including new subnets and domains. Then server and network / WiFi for some individual non trust schools In between all the laptop/desktop imaging.
