Actually no... I know that when I worked in ICT i was there at 8AM (sometimes before!) the head technician was there before i was. We were there after the teachers usually doing jobs that cant be done when there's kids and staff around occupying the rooms etc. Also when i got home i didnt just leave it all behind as you so eloquently put it. Myself and a fair number of technicians i know spend a lot of unpaid time spent using remote desktop from home to access the network and get on with maintenance and various things that need doing that cant be done when there's people on site like forcing various software updates etc. Whilst you say you have the harder job, think about it. We're there before you...we leave after you....we get paid less than you...and without us you'd not have functioning networks, telephones, AV kit, information managment systems and probably most things that go beep wouldnt work. Complain all you like...but to be honest i think it's a little bit unfounded. @webman...you got an uninterrupted lunch! B**tard

If the NS in NS optimum stands for Nil Satis then it reads Nil Satis Optimum...sometimes mistranslated as "nothing but the best" which would be Nil Satis Nisi Optimum. Well outlook you could use Evolution for. I recently made the switch from outlook to evolution. CuteFTP you could use gftp. Unzipping and unraring, well apt-get install unzip unrar and then the built in archive manager will work with those filetypes too. K3B would possibly be able to replace nero. Some of the other stuff i'm not so sure about but there'll be alternatives or you could try to use wine to get them to work.

As I've said I /think/ we were ICT services... but the C stands for communication and seeing as we had a lot to do with the phones, the website, dong powerpoint presentations for school events etc I think the communication bit was justified. Everyone was just too lazy to say the C so it just defaulted out to IT Services anyway.

Ohhh yes i've had to do this a few times before. If this is for your CCNA read the online materials because it will help you with doing this. It's best not to use the online ip calculators and to get used to doing it by hand. Also get used to doing the maths in your head or on paper that you'd use your ordinary calculator for. Just use the calculator to check it or you'll never learn how to do it yourself. In the practical exams for CCNA etc you're not allowed to take in or use any calculators and you have to do it yourself (Well...I'm not allowed) so it's worth learning.

Have you considered getting a professional company to come and install it because then you've got support if it all goes wrong. http://www.richardscctv.com/ is who did the CCTV at my school and it was BNC to the CCTV server which was a 2U rackmount controlled via a web interface. That box handled all the archiving etc. They do all sorts of cameras some with remote telemetary and stuff like nightvision IIRC. Also if you're doing your own solution there are guidelines in the DPA that suggest that you cant record other people's property (or something like that) so richards will setup blanking on your camera maps so that you only record your site etc.

CMIS will do all your registration and exams and timetabling etc AND room booking. So just a word of warning...if you've got CMIS is it worth changing? (Other than besides CMIS is horrible). Webman is the Classroombookings one yours?

Basically only do something if it suits your way of working/computing. With regards to downtime. You are always going to get downtime. It's unavoidable to keep an up -to-date and secure, stable infrastructure right from the physical network media up to applications and patches etc.

@john...If i shouldnt have been touching it then they shouldnt have asked me to touch it and the H&S officer should have expressed his concern for something more than ladders (which i never went near aside from moving them). But...at the same time it's not like i dont accept responsibility for it! @Andrew_C yes. Uses thyristers or something like that IIRC. Fingers slip. You dont do it on purpose. You learn your lesson very quickly to make sure that a circuit isnt live before you go near it. Always test to be on the safe side using a multimeter if you're not sure. (We get taught that at uni.) I was younger then and being careless. You dont learn not to prod the dog unless you get bitten...if you get my drift.

They had used to be the UK branch of Tulip computers but i /think/ there was some stuff to do with liquidation or something. I could very well be wrong so dont quote me on it! We had an engineer on site a few days a week and i must say the three techies we got through from them were awesome! Very helpful and did the job really well and also great guys to work with. Purely vanilla network. No managed nonsense. GPOs and MS solutions throughout aside from the web server (which was from elsewhere). The only thing i can fault them on was that there was only really one of them that liked the FOSS ideology and had a good opinion for the software etc.

I did a smiliar thing with the electric shock...I was re-patching a lantern on the lighting rig during a rehearsal and didnt fade off the channel cause it was part of a scene in the memory and it would have meant killing all the lights (idiot lighing desk ). The round pin 15A sockets that lighting uses doesnt have the insulated part of the live and neutral pins...i caught my fingers on the two.......it hurt. I was in year 9 at the time.
