I've heard bad things about orange aswell. To be honest I never saw the need for a static IP at home when i could just setup my DNS with http://www.everydns.net like i have done. Updates the IP address on your A record. You just setup the client on a cron job or scheduled task.

Well...you can always take it back if it's not what you need.

Try it and see. I'm not entirely sure. If i were to guess I'd say adjusting the windows settings would be a system wide change. As for things like skype and MSN they would be a per user setting in the application data I would have thought.

The USB ones show up as a separate sound device like the microphone in your webcam does. So you just set the system sound to come out of the main sound device that you are using already and tell skype and MSN to use the USB headset/handset.

If you have any Cisco routers about the place they make nice DHCP servers. Just to throw a spanner into the works you could try FreeBSD and ISC-DHCP. Worked nicely for me when i tried it

I was very disappointed when my university shut off the TRU-64 unix box for the summer (i'm still not sure whether they've replaced it or something). Nobody bothers to read them. Surely it's much better to get a lawyer involved if and when he/she is needed to fix a problem as opposed to attempting to counter it with a message on the bottom of an e-mail. A lot of big scale establishments dont put disclaimers on the e-mails then i'm not entirely sure why primary or secondary education might. (I can veryify however that staffordshire uni arent putting disclaimers on student mail at the very least) The ICT staff at my school used to tell students that the e-mail was a privilage that could be revoked and that it bears the school's name in the domain so anything they sent would be seen as a reflection upon the school. So they all just used it for internal spamming.

WIMP....no. The sucess an performance rates for PHP on IIS have always been pittiful when ever I or anyone else I know has tried it...except for one person i suspect to have been lying because of how his face went bright red. If you want to go down the windows route use XAMPP (or some kind of WAMP package) that utilises apache which, in my opinion, has much better support for things like mysql and php and perl and all sorts of other lovely stuff.

Why not just use something like MS Outlook, Evolution (for linux) or Thunderbird (for both). They all have calendar functions. Thunderbird and Evolution both are free (as in beer/libre), Evolution is even free as in open source code(IIRC).

Always worth hosting internally in my opinion. A LAMP box is cheap enough to setup. The only cost flaws i could see behind it are cost for change-control proceedures like getting the LEA/RBC to unblock ports. Port 80 was open by default where i was. Just register a domain name and you point it to your static IP. If you dont have a static IP (which most schools do i think these days) i can recommend http://www.everydns.net/ They're an excellent solution to dynamic IP addresses.

It would be a bit of a shock to the DT curriculum if Pro/D was replaced by Pro/E. It's a lot more complicated to use, it uses different methods to produce the same results as Pro/D...more true to a traditional CAD package some might say. Pro/D is great for use in schools because at the very least, it's simple and the error messages give you some clue as to what's going wrong LOL. I think Pro/E would be a bit too complex for use in teaching KS3 CAD/CAM principals.

I ordered a 4U flightcase for keeping some Cisco kit in and with it came a 600W stereo PA amplifier. On that occassion TNT messed up the delivery but I got them to arrange pickup and sent it back but the guy that runs the business said if i need any kit he'd do me a deal for some cheap stuff....so it's not all bad. Maybe your supplier would do you a deal on your replacement switch if you sent that one back out of good will?

Our desks werent deep enough for there to be the machine on the top of the desk and the keyboard with any space for cables etc...they only just fitted. If the kids had the keyboards propped up with the legs instead of flat they quite often managed to snap USB keys in the front USB ports on the mini-ATX machines we had. So much soldering
