That is how to check permissions on a folder...but for the actual mysql permissions on the database you need to use the commands or phpmyadmin or something like that. sudo apt-get install phpmyadmin (should work i think) and then go to http://serveraddress/phpmyadmin and then select the database and then go to privilages and make sure that your user that you're using has got full permissions on the DB (or at least the necessary ones...i'm lazy so i just put in full).

Well if he's getting the error message in the web browser i'd assume he's got it setup. Also check wether mysql is started in the same way but using mysql intead of the apache2 bit.

Don't forget to setup any upstream proxies your RBC/LEA might be using.

Check that your mysql user has the right permissions on the mrbs database. If you're unfamiliar with the commands for mysql then you could use phpmyadmin for a web based admin front end or what i use which is MySQL administrator http://www.mysql.com/products/tools/administrator/

In our rooms we had speakers mounted either side of the whiteboards with an amplifier plugged into the PC and phonosockets mounted on the wall for additional inputs. If you've got something like that maybe plugging the ipod in directly would be more appropriate as opposed to the software route. This way you can garuntee the kids are listening to the podcast as opposed to playing around and listening to whatever if they're using headphones.

I had that problem with an APC Smart-UPS 700 i've got. Lowering the sensitivity using the button on the back of it seemed to fix it. It was being powered from a small village's naff power supply at the time...so the distorted signal sounds about right.

If i were in work it'd be nice to have a discount etc but seeing as eye tests are only ~20 quid i wouldnt see it as /that/ big a deal for an annual/bi-annual expense. As a student i'm meant to be able to claim back the cost using a HC20 form (or something like that) which i havent up until now. Maybe i should. I know my eyes are shot...i've been wearing glasses for 8 years and i'm now 19 and going into my second year of uni and they've gotten MUCH worse...glasses are expensive too!

There's a big thing in the curriculum where they arent meant to refer to Microsoft Word as the only word processor etc. They are meant to be teaching alternatives etc. When i was doing A-level ICT that was one of the big things, yet the only alternative the teacher could come up with was "stuff from the Lotus suite" During lessons the respecitve functions of the software (ie database, spreadsheet, word processor) were refered to as microsoft products from then on but were told not to use brand names in coursework. That was the extent of the willingness to embrace open source and alternatives to Microsoft. Very disappointing.

Does anyone know of a FOSS alternative to FlexLM? It doenst have to be any better or any worse really just something that does the same job and will serve out Pro Engineer Licenses. Cheers!

I agree with kestrel1 there. I'm currently 1/2 way through a CCNA (Literally, CCNA1 and CCNA2) but by the end of next year I should be most way into a CCNP and I'll also have done some modules for other cisco stuff like the VoIP. Think about where in computing you want to go whether it's networks, desktop support, server support etc etc then choose the qualification best suited to you.

The data cable is twisted to prevent interference from other network cabling...not mains voltage. Mains voltage is a bit much. You also shouldnt run network cables parallel and in close proximity to flourescent strip lights.

Couldn't you just stick a router/firewall box on the port that connects you to the LEA network for the internet. Leave the CCTV plugged straight into the CCTV port?

lol. Well i meant 24/7 in your contract. You dont see 24/7 support terms in education contracts do you? If the head of ICT had called me up at 0300hrs saying that he couldnt get the shared area on the work from home i'd have told him it can wait until the morning!

/me hands Skoggmeiger a sense of humour. Lighten up dude! It's things like that job post that push me further and further away from a job in education when i'm done with uni. So many more attractive jobs in industry. Of course...you put yourself open to 24/7 on call stuff in industry where you dont see that as often in education.

Whilst a cisco router with ACLs will protect about certain things you cant do URL blacklisting on it so there's an advantage to your own ISA / FOSS solution outright. Also editing NAS and ACLs on a cisco router isnt for everyone. They can become a bit of a headache. I have to write everything out on paper with diagrams to make double sure i've done it right

When my older sister went to university she lived at home. I just couldn't handle it so i decided to move away for uni. It's the best choice i ever made. It gives you such independance and freedom to get on with things you've got to do in your own time and not be rushed into doing a crappy job because you've got to go visit family or some other tedious task. I have another month then i get to go back...can't wait!

VW beetles are horrid. Now...landrover discovery...defenders....some range rovers are all very good You can sometimes pick up some of these things quite cheaply from army surpless places and if not at least you know it's been well looked after.

Cable is good IMO. I've got it at my mum's house and we're getting it in our house in stafford because it doesnt rely on the BT line. If you dont already have one it's a far greater implementation cost due to the need to have the line enabled obviously. But Virgin Media have started to introduce traffic shaping which is going to be a PITA.
