@j17sparky's comment RE: ACLs. Yes, the ACLs are hard to setup unless you know the right syntax, the difference between standard and extended ACLs and have a clear understanding of how data flow works...you'd be suprised at the number of people get that wrong. I can't use my Cisco 2600s for my internet cause they're not the fast ethernet ones...they're standard 10mbps and my internet is 20mbps NAT statements on cisco routers is a lot of fun aswell. I'd just use a m0n0wall box. M0n0wall, pfsense or smoothwall...take your pick, they're all great. I prefer M0n0wall and pfsense because they're FreeBSD based.

I wish i could drive...something that needs to be addressed when i've got some more money through...until then it's the bike for me I was considering getting a road bike but there's not really much sense in it for just going up and down the road to uni and the occassional bit of exercise.

LOL. Great story. I hate it when someone tries to have a go at you for something and they're completely wrong...they know it but wont admit it. British Gas are a good example.....some woman quoted the price per kWh for my lecky on the prepay meter....which it isnt...because my meter TELLS me the price per unit. She then went on to tell me that i must be reading it wrong because her bit of paper must be more up to date than my meter which updated the price yesterday when i topped it up. I got full marks in my instrumentation and measurement module...if i can read an oscilloscope i can bloody well read a prepay electricity meter. *sigh* That and 4 different people cant have read it wrong. Awwww. I genuinly (i wish i could spell that) feel sorry for you. I hate troubleshooting networks that have no schematics and the best description someone can give you is "well...that plugs into there then it goes to that and then there and then is routed to these which then go to the LEA" I have an uncle who's a head teacher, and he took his son's PC into school and got the techie to look at it...he spent ages trying to find out why the PC wasnt working at home...turns out the techie had left the proxy server in the ie settings. That has to be the easiest problem i've ever trouble shooted

We had a network manger that built our new vanilla network. This was a brand new e-learning centre and lots of new stuff so we could move of RM CC. He basically cripped the network by bad design using roaming profiles that were setup wrong. It was a costly rebuild to fix it after he left.

Please please please don't use USB for UPS!!! Wherever possible, use serial...or buy with serial! It's stupid of APC and other manufacturers to build them into the devices tbh. If your USB driver fails or the USB root hub dies then that's it...server bounces itself.

Visio works quite well and you can import extra symbols etc into it. You'll probably have a copy of it if you've got the MS Volume license stuff.

I quite like sysman's logo. The font reminds me of Sophos for some reason. Maybe there could be a combination of DosBox's efforts with this one so that some of the existing themes like the devil/angel can be perserved to show that this isnt just a serious site...so it plays on the more friendly side of EduGeek, a supportive community as opposed to just a boringly professional organization.

Where i was had stone machines and i seem to remember some hassle with drivers for NICs and other things when usring RIS. We got them off the CDs that came with the machines IIRC. It's been a year since i worked there now, so my memory is a little hazy about it, but i think that's what we did.

That's what i thought...and tried to say in a kind of obscure roundabout way without confusing people. If the 10.1 is staying the same as a subnetID then that should allow from 10.1.0.1 all the way to 10.1.255.254 with your /16 mask. Odd...very odd.

As far as i understand it, if you've got a 10.0.0.0 class A network your subnet mask should be 255.0.0.0. 255.255.0.0 is for a class B network (172.something.0.0). But if you're 10.1 part of your IP address is staying the same i doubt this is going to have much effect. Try it though! Can someone confirm that for me so i'm not ill-advising jmair there please?

Well for a start you're using a class A IP address. So your subnet mask would be something along the lines of 255.0.0.0 (unless it's been subnetted up a bit). Class A allows you to have a hell of a lot more than 250 hosts talking to each other than just your standard class C 255.255.255.0 mask with 254 hosts The network ID is only using the first octet under class A so the remaining three octets are used for the host IDs.....so that's a hell of a lot of ip addresses........ Check to see what your subnet mask is.
