See if you can befriend a cisco instructor and get hold of the lab manuals...because they really are useful. If you're planning on getting yourself some cisco routers then get 2600 series ones. I've got a couple of 2610s with WIC-2T smart serial cards in them for practicing the serial links. For CCNA 1 and 2 you dont configure switches so you dont need cisco switches just yet. Back to the book thing...I've got CCNA 1 and CCNA 2 and havent had to buy any books yet...but i've got access to the online training materials because i'm doing my CCNA through an actual cisco academy. My university does the CCNA and CCNP and IPT and FNS courses as part of my degree so the cost is sort of inclusive.

http://www.gallery2.org/ Gallery2, I've found to be epic for this sort of thing, due to the fact that with a simple registry key (that they provide) you can use the "publish to web" feature of windows XP to publish the photos in a local folder to the site pretty quickly instead of filling in web forms.

I used to use no-ip for my dynamic dns when i first started. You couldnt refer your domain to it without paying (i dont think...) so i set mine up to do a web-hop to the .no-ip.org address. What i do now is have my dns servers on the domains set to EveryDNS, i run the update client from my FreeBSD server and all my domain nams i have registered (you can have 20 max i think) point to my IP dynamically I've never had any problems with them and am not going to be changing in the forseeable future.

HDMI does sound but is crazy expensive for long lengths. I recently bought a PC to hook up to a housemate's high def LCD so I just use a DVI-HDMI cable (my card will support up to 1080p or something liek that) but has no HDMI ports so a convertor seems to do the job.

Make your user a member of the wheel group and see if that helps.

I'm doing a joblot of Cisco stuff at uni at the moment. I've got CCNA 1 and 2. Starting CCNA 3 and 4 and bits of CCNP next semester, Currently doing Fundamentals of Network Security (another cisco thingy) and IP Telephony (yes you guessed it...more cisco). Can you tell my Uni is a Cisco academy? I think it's worth doing purely because i find it interesting, never mind that it looks good on your CV because you've shown willing in the area of CPD.

No degree necessary. I'm currently studying my second year of Network Engineering...so i'm slightly biased in these situations. Have you considered a part time degree and the job and negotiating this with your employers?

I've just started Cisco FNS (Fundamentals of Network Security) which uses VLANs but they're preconfigured. I should imagine we'll touch on it in the Cisco IP telephony course i'm doing too and CCNA 3 will definately do it.

ICT was indeed more about applications and presentation of data such as using database and spreadsheet packages. But saying that you have to cover stuff such as network topology and various components. They teach you the difference between a hub and a switch and a MAC address and an IP address. So there's a bit more technical stuff to it than just using applications. But I will agree that it did appear to be mostly just that.

*jumps up and down and waves hands* I was taught binary. AS Level maths and AS Level ICT did some small amount of binary. Not enough to be tested on it, but enough to explain how it works and you could have quite easily picked it up from that. It was taught in maths as an aid to teaching base 8 for logs. I use it for Cisco courses and subnetting etc. I'm just starting my second year at uni now so that should give you some clue as to how long ago that was (not long lol).

The question beggs to be asked but why cant they just type the internal address or you setup a DNS redirect and they use a dns name instead?

I've got a mate with a vaio...he loves it except for the vista part. You cant get certain devices to work under XP becuase there just arent drivers available for them. AKA the manufacturers are only producing for vista. So he got a bit irritated at that.

You find *nix pointless....a VAST majority of the internet is run by *nix...BSD and UNIX... So in essence you find this site pointless? Without *nix/BSD/UNIX you wouldn't be able to get here. Shame on you john

I like how teenagers have been generalised a little there. I personally would much rather have a discovery than any crappy lowered suspension boy racer jobby. I'm only a teen until next July so it's allowed i suppose.

We used to keep all of ours in boxes in the class rooms...then the teachers werent being responsible with them when they were using the e-learning suites so there were kids sitting streaming radio etc. Then there would be ones getting vandalised so the boxes got removed from the rooms and the teachers had to come and get them and they would be counted out and back in again. Damage was still occurring as was inappropriate use so use of headphones was just stopped altogether. Then it was made clear to teachers that the classrooms would be checked and damage reported and that their department was to pay for any damage. So headphones were put out and left by the computers and also there was a crackdown on inappropriate use too. I have a feeling ours came from MISCO. Our school weren't very good at shopping around for equipment...there was about two or three suppliers that they used. Most amusing.
