Something i've seen before is a digital camera with a big memory card strapped to a kite and sent up. The camera had been modded with a 555 timer circuit instead of a capture button and it took photos every 30 seconds or so. Interesting results.

"I got a iPod Nano of the CLC at my old school for doing some voluntary work." I got a cheque for £150. Not that 150 quid equates to two years of spending 95% of my free periods, time before and after school, lunchtimes and bits of holidays doing work for them. But still...the experience was invaluable and the HoD for ICT is now serving as my main professional reference atm BTW...i'm on placement year next year if anyone has any positions on big sites etc that i might want to consider applying for

I quite like webman's idea. The problem is, once it's been used once the novelty would wear off. That and it'd be expensive to replace if some kid crashed it.

I like the freedomtoaster idea. How about starting some kind of afterschool gaming club and buying a few dedicated machines to run it with or a game server and some licenses if your current workstations can handle it?

I'll just start off with telling you that I'm from Birmingham origionally and live in Walsall over the holidays which is just outside of Birmingham. Birmingham doesn't have any christian symbolism at Christmas from what i can remember of last year. But they do call it Christmas...i.e. "Turning on the Christmas Lights." But what we do have a LOT of is stars. Stars and stars and stars. It's an ambiguous symbol that they can get away with putting in lights. But that has deep seated christian roots at christmas time. At christmas the magi followed a star to bethlehem to go and see jesus and give him some cool sh*t. So if it bothers you that much come to Brum and look at all the pretty stars

Yup...i've already got an ubuntu testing server running LTSP with a neoware eon thinclient. As an aside...neoware eon 2000 don't wanna work too well. Had to use vesa for Xserver and turn off the audio in the LTS settings

Thanks guys. Geoff you've linked me to those before. Only problem was that when i installed openldap...it failed over and wouldnt start every time i tried so i went off to play with NIS+. Maybe i should give it a go on linux as opposed to FreeBSD.

If you have something like MS ISA server you can specify usergroups in the AD for which you want a rule to apply to. You can also specify time frames and particular groups of computers etc. So what you'd do is setup a rule to block all sites except the ones you want them to use, and have it to come on at a the times you want it to apply. You would stick that above the rule for your normal allow internet rule i /think/ so it takes a higher priority. It's been a couple of years since i played with ISA so details might be slightly wrong, but it can do it.

I'm still interested in a centrally managed users solution similar to AD that is SIMPLE to implement. I can't stress the simple bit enough. I mean usermanagement as in log on and log off. linuxgirlie. how do you do it? Also...how are you locking down the machines so student's get certain "profiles" etc? These might seem like questions with simple answers but i've never really managed to get a conscensus (sp?) from people on how they do it before. Yh, i mean on linux...should have said that

It's been a while since i played with my VM e-mail addresses and mailboxes (i stopped using them after a month). If you go into the selfcare panel and have a play there might be something for forwarding e-mail to another e-mail account.

I'm just having a fiddle with a test network at the moment and what i've got is very simple (at least in my mind). I have a 24-port switch, vlanned off so that one port is on vlan10 which is then in turn connected to my main network. the rest of the ports are on vlan20 which i'm using for a thin-client test network with LTSP. There is one port i've got set on the switch with dot1q encapsulation as a trunk port for vlan10, 20 and 1 (the management vlan) which is then connected to a cisco 2610 router which i've setup with a sub-interface per-vlan. (ie 0/0.1 0/0.10 and 0/0.20.....you get the idea) The idea was that i'd do inter-vlan routing using the sub-interfaces so that my thin-client network would be able to access the internet via my main network. The problem is that the 2610 wont let me setup the encapsulation on the sub-interfaces. Can anyone tell me whether this model actually supports encapsulation or whether i've got to use a different IOS please? I'm currently using Version 12.2(10r)1 and the image name is c2600-i-mz.120-7.T.bin I'm currently considering a 2600XM that i've seen on ebay with the Advanced Enterprise IOS on it which should handle this (and CME when i get round to that) but obviously don't want to spend the money uneccessarily. @ elky...i'm planning on my next piercing being my nipple...could be interesting. I don't know that i can get it done though. (Just to alter the tone of the thread )

I actually had my lip pierced in august (labret stud) and it was interesting to see how quickly people's attitudes change to you just because you have a piercing. Apparently, if you have a piercing you must be some kind of thug. Personally, scarification and some of the more body extreme modifications aren't for me but it doesn't mean that i think theyr'e wrong or sick etc etc. I have a job interview at M&S for some temp work during uni later today. It should be interesting to see what they make of it seeing as their policy actually allows descreet facial piercing.

Ohhhh i could throw a spanner in the linux based works and suggest some kind of BSD based OS. My server runs FreeBSD but i've never really tried it as a desktop OS and it's wifi support is probably horrid.

Ubuntu will probably support it tbh. It seems to have no problem with all the various wifi cards i've had in the past both on-board, PCI and PCMCIA.

At first i thought it was a maths thing. take 12....add them together you get three....three from 12 == 9.... take 15...add them together you get 6....6 from 15.....9 then ... take 99....add them together you get 18....18 from 99.....oh bugger lol It still got it though!
