It would be quite interesting to come along and meet a few people. But seeing as i don't acutally work in education anymore i don't actually know how relevant it would be to my degree to justify the time off.

I am by no means an expert on this but the way I did it to the RAID on my home server was by using the embedded SCSI utility on boot. It only had three slots for HDDs so i was moving from a mirror up to a raid-5 which meant backing up and re-producing the raid.

Dell servers are NOTHING like Dell desktops and laptops...just so you know They are so much better. If you can afford the cost, IBM are always good build quality, at least the ones i've had contact with in the past were. Most things produced by IBM are rugged and reliable but it comes at a greater cost than a dell obviously.

Oh I don't bloody know what's going on there lol. That's what we were taught on CCNA1 and 2 and are being taught on the IPT course so...meh. Dunno wtf that's all about. Is it PoE on the links that are negotiated to be gigabit? or is it PoE on 10 and 100 but when it comes to 1000 you're stuffed....I've never actually come accross a gigabit PoE device before tbh. I'd be interested to hear how it works with the gigabit and PoE because as far as I know and am being taught...you can't do it.

Well VPN's can be a whole lot cheaper thatn a couple of hundred quid! Hamatchi for example is free (as far as i can remember). There are a number of open source solutions aswell. Paying extra money for a VPN ontop of your windows licenses and all the free (as in beer not speach) and/or open source stuff that is available for use these days is a bit OTT imo.

PoE is great. We have two Cisco PoE switches in the cisco lab at uni for IP Telephony. You can remotely reboot devices too just by running the shutdown and no shutdown commands, which is great if you've got 8 phones on a test rig and really cba to go round pulling the cables or remembering the button sequence to reboot. The only problems with it are that when it comes to gigabit, obviously you cant use it because of gigabit using all of the cables in your cat5e / cat6. So, as i was thinking to myself today, PoE could be one of the major affecting factors in the development of the next standard copper network media. For example, they'll need an extra pair for the power. Then on top of that there is the question of future proofing and not just enabling the present. (If you get what i mean). How many more pairs do they put in for future developments or will they try and get gigabit down 3 pairs leaving one for the PoE? Or will they move away from the PoE idea for faster speeds and leave it for 100mbps only or maybe just forget PoE and copper totally?? These sort of things fascinate me (obviously or i wouldnt be studying network engineering!)

Where I was we asset tagged. A plastic tag that was glued onto the kit with some cheapo araldite equivalent. We never had a problem with swap outs or replacements for equipment. Negative aspect is that they are shit. Kids snap them off. They leave a nasty mess where they where becasue of the adhesive. Tagging a room of 30 machines and monitors and two printers, a projector, a smart board and a stereo amp leaves you rather high. Take that as a negative or a positive as applicable. Asset tagging was the "bells and whistles" replacement for heat branding....must have been a manglement decision.

Can i maybe just point out here that this isn't for industry grade production. So "for the sake of 50 quid" on every machine....that's what...(i cant remember how many machines he wants)...another box or another midi keyboard or two? This is education after all.

Without deviating from the topic too much, but just for a second. This is a classic example of what i generalise and call "distro-wars." I suppose it extends to mac vs PC aswell. Basically ignore everyone else's personal opinions and use what suits you and your situation best. (Even if it's what the music dept. are forcing on you ) Now...if the music teacher wants macs then you could try asking them to contact other music teachers in other schools that use macs to get them to maybe arrange a quick visit to see the setup, how it's layed out etc or send across some specs and maybe some basic costing and suppliers? I'm not a mac user so I can't really say what specs you'd need or whether you'd need an xserve or not...but thinking about the midi aspect as has already been mentioned, is important. As an end user of a bluesocket captive portal I can safely say "DON'T GET IT." No one I know that is an end user of it actually likes it. As far as I know the cisco APs are configured using a web interface not an IOS console.

I don't know if it's been mentioned anywhere else but having someone somewhere that knows your network and also knows their stuff to come in might be useful. For example if you're lacking in technicians because they've all come down with foot and mouth or another plague of your choice, then there's someone that can come in to do the essentials.

I'd be finished with this degree i'm doing and be working. Totalling out my life's earnings with a student loan is not as much fun as it sounds. The best thing about being at university is, although it sounds horrid, the distance you can put between yourself and your blasted complicated family! Nice to have my own life for a change instead of being stuck in the middle of their mistakes. I'd also like to be able to drive and own a landrover. And a Cisco 2600-XM router...i can't run Call Manager Express on mine :'(

Doesn't necessarily need to be another cisco one really does it though. Just as long as you know how to configure a VLAN from the IOS on the cisco one the other one is just implemenation of theory as opposed to IOS commands. I have two cisco 2924-EN-XL switches (different to yours as they have got the enterprise IOS that supports etherchannel and clustered management) and i've also got an Allied Telesyn managed switch which is considerably more naff but still supports vlans so i can have a play using all three

If you want to practice VLANs properly you'll need two switches.
