What brand is it? Does the F2 button rely on some kind of a utility/restore partition that you've inadvertantly killed off that might have been needed to finish POST tests or something daft like that?

I know this is the *nix forum but there's no *BSD forum so here goes... I've got a NIS server setup on a FreeBSD box following the instructions on the freeBSD online manual. I setup the master server on one machine and a setup another machine to act as the client. Both freeBSD...the client shows the user that i'd setup into my /var/yp/master.password on the NIS master box when you run the command ypcat passwd But when i try and login to the client using the NIS user it doesnt work as if there's no user. Any ideas for anything i could have missed or that i need to do? Cheers....

Don't use standard debian. It takes some effort to get it to install and it's not supported (or so i was told). I recommend ubuntu server.

Everytime i've had it it's cause the DNS isnt pointint to the DC. Check in the DHCP server settings for the DNS server entry. ipconfig on a client you've hooked up to the domain should show the dns entries to the dc like DMcCoy said. If not...change your dhcp server settings.

Yup. If you enter it on the website you can see who purchased the PC aswell (iirc). It shows the shipping date of my second hand poweredge

Sorry, but I'm a student...and even I know that's bad pay! Whilst it may be a lovely school to work at and the kids may be a joy...I'd rather have to wear a stab vest to work and get paid an appropriate amount for the skills expected. As it's been said...if you have skills and qualifications you're going to go where they appear to be valued with the higher wages. The redeeming feature of the job is the Microsoft Certifications and CPD. That's my two penneth worth. Did you fill the position in the end?

For god's sake PLEASE order the restore CDs from them. If you want to play with linux or installing various other operating systems on it then you are quite likely to kill the restore partition. I recommended linux to a friend who got me to install it and it killed off his dell restore partition. I got blamed as expected. But i then ordered restore CDs for him to try and shut him up. He agreed to the linux damnnit!

That depends on what user you're accessing the share as.

If opensource and UNIX are so unreliable and insecure etc how come MANY large organisations and educational institutes use *nix, *bsd and UNIX solutions for servers, clients, parallel computing, rendering farms etc etc. With regards to it being free....if FreeBSD (What I use on my servers) were to become a pay-for product....i'd probably do it becuase it's a stable, secure system that has security and stability inherent in the design. But if it were to become closed source...i dont think i'd do it because that is what's key to the maintenance and growth of FOSS software. At the end of the day if there was an easily implemented open source answer to MS AD how many of us would move over? I'd want to. People are afraid of what they dont know. What you have to do is convince them to accept your point of view or at least live with it. Tell them the weather is forecast on UNIX based machines.......maybe that's a bad example though. LOL.

Hmm...well my webserver runs on freebsd but the principal's most definately the same. I don't use samba shares to upload files. I ftp them into place. The permissions on my site are: 4 -rwxr-xr-x 1 joedetic www 2218 Aug 9 16:29 index.php So...your user has access and so does the www group for publishing. Have you tried that? Or www-data or whatever it is on deb...i've forgotten.

There'd be some software to do it i'm sure.

Why not chown the files to your deb user? Once you've chowned set the permissions to be world readable. To me it sounds like more of a problem with samba configs...i always mess those up. Maybe installing an ftpd would be easier? That way you could setup the httpd to point to the home dir of the user that you're logging into the ftpd as. So you point your httpd config to ~/public_html or something like that

Mixed O/S environment. That batch file wouldnt run on a linux machine and wouldnt shut down the linux machine. You'd need to run something involving an SSH login for the linux server. Yes it could be done...but why when you could just run apcupsd, which is a daemon NOT produced by APC themselves and doesnt require tonnes of system memory afaik.

We were using alice softlink but thankfully the librarian wanted to keep it all local on the library-master machine. The only interaction that it had with the network was backup to a network share. It was horrid
