I agree with abrobson. Different styles and methods of different people can clash. Also age difference might play a part. I'm very grateful that EduGeek has been there for me whilst I've been "developing" my way in the industry so maybe it can be there for FN too.

Yes...but also a big part of life-online is maintaining a little bit of personal space where it's required. Hence reluctantness to give out MSN addresses that you use for communicating with family and close friends to a random 16-year old from edugeek...however responsible he might be. Jesus H Christ....I'm only 19 next month....i must be getting old before my time.

Didn't you know webman? You have to be a cynic to work in ICT. I was onced called a cynic by a visiting technician and then told i was perfect for a job in ICT because i had all the qualities right lol

1) First names only by photographs of them on the website if a name is to be put down 2) Annual notice for withdrawal of censent in newsletter. Withdrawals must be in writing. As far as i know that was our policy. I didnt handle that side of the website I just added content as it was passed to me. But that was how I think we had it setup.

@FN-Greatermanchester - maybe your business account yes...but I and most people I know dont have business accounts prefering not to use MSN for business. @Geoff - No matter how much it's meant to be innocent until proven guilty i've always found it to be the other way round. After all...you can be arrested on suspicion of something without having done it.

Also i'd have thought that it could look a bit odd someone in a position of responsibility having an unknown minor from the internet on their personal MSN contact list....that would be my reasoning behind saying no if i were ever asked.

I can confirm what elsiegee40 has just said having been a volunteer techie in my own school whilst in VI form. It's a very good way to learn but you do get taken advantage of if you're not careful about saying "NO" from time to time. Have you tried the job search on the job centre website. Also contacting your local LEA might prove helpful in finding out whether there's any jobs at local schools etc. Good luck!

Hardware raid is the best in my opinion. I've got a server at home with three 18GB hot swap SCSI disks in it running at RAID-5. With raid 1 you loose the most disk space. 50% of the physical diskspace available is devoted to redundancy. If you were to get three disks however you could do a raid 5 which is a striped set with distributed parity. So a good redundancy.

Having learnt to type on my own...it's some bastardized version of touch-typing. Obviously being a student you've got to type or you're out on your arse (literally, cause they wont accept any handwritten work). Safe to say that most practice was on IRC and MSN and it's abismal. I tend to use the right hand shift key for all "shifting requirements". And my hands tend to stray from their appropriate sides of the keyboard most of the time. But if i'm forced to i can try to stick to the home row and use the correct keys without looking but it slows down my WPM a LOT.

It's far better to spend the time donig it yourself so that you know you're getting what you want. But, my school decided to go with Clicks & Links from Manchester to do the site. The CMS was an implemenation of OpenCMS and they put it all on a debian server that they configured for us. Probably not the best choice they ever made because none of the ICT staff are familiar with linux. Not even rebooting it they were just hitting the powerbutton on the front until i showed them how to do it. Also i wasnt impressed that it had been sold as a UNIX server, NOT a UNIX-like server.

If you're on a SHUK line (or have they renamed it to LES 10 or something) then you'd probably both be linked to the LEA's upstream proxies so i would have thought you might be able to get a relatively fast line between the two schools.

I like greenfieldsupport's view! My FreeBSD box is "rock solid stable" as is my Ubuntu server box. I've never managed to crash either of them yet. Also i've never crashed a debian box.

Point taken with regards to the *nix/*BSD software but i'm yet to see how it's made easily available via some kind of repositories system like ports/portage or even something like aptitude...maybe you could shed some light on that for me. Parallels....well, the person i know who has a mac is always complaining that parallels doesnt work right. For what they are...they're expensive. If you were to ask most students who've bought a mac, WHY they bought a mac, they'll tell you it's becauase it looks pretty. I'd rather have an ugly comptuer that looks like a turd than an overpriced fashion accessory. Also. NO...i dot NOT like the iPod. Creative Zen i've always found to be much easier to use. My friends and acquaintences with Zen dont complain about battery whereas the iPods owners do. As i'm sure you can tell by my previous posts i'm going off general concensus between various friends and family etc.

Zimbra, whilst very nice i'm sure, appears to have too much bloat for what i want to do. I'll have a look at those sites you suggested Geoff. I can tell that it's going to be nights sat at a terminal trying to figure this stuff out lol. Thanks for the help!

I know a guy at uni and me and a mate tasked him with trying to convince us into getting a mac via demonstrations. His key arguing point was 4 way scrolling using the mighty mouse. Which he then said "it's not that mighty, i dont like it much." Other things he was trying to sell us on were the eye candy....well beryl and emerald...problem solved. For an OS that there's not a lot of software out there for (relative to *nix/*BSD and M$), people sure like to make it seem good...there's too many down sides for my liking. That and it's rediculously expensive. Same with iPods...i dont like them. They're horrible to use and the battery is crap...need i say more.

Mac OS X.........can I stop laughing now? You wouldnt catch me using a Mac for a server no matter how reliable/pretty etc etc it is. Just on principal!
